Streaming Vs Silver Screen

So Steven Spielberg is trying to get Netflix barred from Oscars. It has ignited some controversy.
But it made me wonder how Streaming stacks up against theaters in India. High-speed internet availability in India is even lower than in the United States. So can streaming-only movies really cater to the masses?

A lot of people tend to judge movies based on BOI performance. Many people say star power determines salary. Similarly, TRP determines television ratings and value. How can content without TRP or Box office data be evaluated? What determines salary in streaming flicks? What determines if a streaming movie is hit or flop? Would some movies dismissed as flops have been better off as streaming releases?

There is also the risk factors. Netflix can make an anthology like Lust Stories and not worry about causing quite a stir. Do you think more niche filmmakers will be tempted to go the streaming route? Alternatively, can good niche films like Lipstick Under My Burkha recover money if the audiences prefer to stream content instead of watch something in the theaters?

Many here are saying that theaters are outdated and a relic of the past. I still see movies as a social experience. Streaming simply cannot recreate the magic of going to theater with friends/family. But I grew up in India. Do Indians share my POV that the big screen cannot and should not be let to die? Or do they believe that streaming can and will change how we consume movies - and could make theaters irrelevant?

You would rather stream even superhero flicks?

I too like to stream most films.

But some films I feel deserve to be seen on the big screen. Watching Wonder Woman's fight sequence with the theme playing in Dolby Atmos surround sound is pure magic. The wide panoramic shots of the companions walking in Lord of the Rings just don't inspire the same awe on the small screen. The kaiju of Pacific Rim don't seem to be as threatening on the small screen. Same with dinosaurs. Dinosaurs deserve giant screens.

I am so heartbroken I am seeing Captain Marvel on Superscreen instead of Ultrascreen. Ultrascreen tickets were sold out through the whole opening week.

I am getting used to streaming more and more. LOTR is exceptional. It still gives me chill. Hobbit, Wonder woman, Avengers, Black Panther are ofc silver screen movies. I haven't seen LOTR on big screen :"( i would watch it so many times, another one is Lawrence of Arabia. I go to theater primarily for cinematography and the scale tbh.
Wait for the week, you'll get tickets hopefully. I usually wait and almost never watch anything on the opening day 😆

I bought my tickets New Year's Eve. The opening weekend was sold out. So I bought the largest possible screen on Tuesday March 12th. I don't know if I can shield myself from spoilers for much too long. If I like it, I'll watch it again later.

oh man oh man... what can i say about silver screen. I remember when the Mummy came out in summer of 1999. It was hot as hell in west Texas. We had just had an early dismissal from school and some of my friends and I wanted to go chill out on a theatre because our parents wouldn't turn on A/C because it was too expansive so we used go to the store, movies, etc until it was dawn. My earliest memory of being blown away by a movie was The Mummy. I remember walking about a mile to the bus in sroching heat. I met up with my friends who lived close by the movie theatre. The bus didn't have an A/C so we had all the windows down. We got to my friend's place and got like six bottles of cold water before we went to the theatre (in those days we used to sneak in food, etc in our backpacks before pre-9/11). I remember as I walked into the theatre the cool breeze knocked my face. After i got out of the theatre I remember how great the film was... it was the EXPERIENCE with my friends that made it awesome. the noises the audience made, walking to theatre, etc.

I've always had a better experience watching a film on big screen than I have with streaming. It just doesn't feel the same. For example, when I went to go see Gadar in India... omg... the audience was going crazy. It made the film so memorable for me. 😆

Big movies like Super hero movies like Avengers, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, etc and Period movies like Baahubali, Bajirao Mastani, etc should be watched on Big Silver Screen!

Big screen any day for me. Movies will always be a big screen experience for me with a full house preferably 😊

Netflix and other online streams can co-exist, don't think it needs to replace the other.

Also, this is the reason why there should be a strong star system. We need many stars who can pull the audience to theatres.

I prefer visually stunning with special effects movies (Fantasy, Sci-fi, animated, action...) in cinemas and others streaming. I do feel that streaming will take over; the generational shift is inevitable
