Almost did. Roma was a Netflix film. It won best international film and was in the running to win best picture before it got Green Booked.

Some people prefer streaming. Some people like the big screen. Some like both.
The big battle Spielberg is fighting. Should streaming movies be eligible for award ceremonies?

Let's take a critically acclaimed film by Netflix 'Soni'. I loved it. I think it deserves awards and recognition.

BUT

It never got a theatrical release. Critics and moviegoers never got to comment on the cinematic experience. That is why TV movies are barred from awards across the globe. Is it fair to say that if streaming providers want their movies to be eligible for movie awards, they have to do at least a limited theatrical release to allow critics and moviegoers comment on the cinematic experience?

I am not sure about other movies. Recently Netflix movie "Velvet buzzsaw" (by "Nightcrawler's " director) released both in theatres as well in Netflix at the same time also premiered at Sundance film festival. I think that's a good trend.

The criticism that Spielberg and his supporters have with this is that neither Roma nor Velvet Buzzsaw were traditional releases.

Traditionally movies are distributed. There is some bargaining and contracting as to how much each reel costs and how the theatrical revenue is shared with the theater, distributor, and producer.

Netflix "rents" screens rather than distribute the movie. This means they take 100% of the risk and 100% of the revenue. Many feel that this method plus a token film festival premiere is merely gaming the system to be eligible for awards, plus a bit unethical because actual film distribution companies cannot do this.

Made by Netflix primarily for streaming. They will rent select screens for showings if they want to promote the movie as an awards contender.

You just prompted me to check how many best movie nominations I've actually watched

2018 = 2/8
2017 = 1/9
2016 = 6/9
2015 = 6/8
2014 = 3/8
2013 = 8/9 (wow)
2012 = 6/8
2011 = 6/9
2009 = 5/10
2008 = 3/5
2007 = 2/5
2006 = 3/5
2005 = 2/5
2004 = 3/5
2003 = 2/5
2002 = 3/5
2001 = 2/5
2000 = 2/5

Damn. I miss the good old days when only 5 movies were nominated.

I'm with you RTH, although IDK the logistics side of cinema.

I love and much prefer watching films in theatres. I prefer an actual cinema hall over the home theatre, even when we can pause or rewind in the latter..

I love that escape of watching it in a theatre.. I cannot explain it. If it were upto me, I'd go to the theatres as much as I can 😆

The experience of watching in a theatre with a crowd is far superior. The feeling of being part of a crowd watching, feeling and experiencing a film all at the same time in the same way (more or less) feels magical for me.. I love it when the film is at it's sensational or stimulating point, and grabs everyone's attention - emotionally, mentally, etc... maybe each of us have varying degree of involvement in a film, but still..

Even with no people or other available platforms, I love watching in theatres... here's one of my favorite songs in the spirit of this thread :)
