Are critics (even the genuine ones) unintentionally biased?

So I watched Newton today. The movie hall was completely sold out.
I am not the sort to watch too many films in the movie theater. I go for only the real good or entertaining ones.
Because of all the reviews that Newton got, I thought it was worth the money and time. But I was honestly disappointed. The movie started off very well - quirky, funny, interesting, good story etc. But slowly slowly it just became boring. And trust me, I am no fan of masala films. I like movies with good story and acting even if they are about some serious issue. But Newton just seemed like it became boring in the second half.

At the same time, Haseena is getting bad reviews and there have been specific bad comments about Shradha's acting and look in the film. I have not watched Haseena yet (not sure if I ever will) and Shradha seems like an okay-ish actor to me. But from the trailers of the film, her acting didn't seem that bad. And her look, of course, would depend on the real Haseena's look - which would be different at different ages. So, I don't get why there is so much flak.

Somehow, I feel like critics are biased towards some actors. Not that I mind. I would anyday watch a Rajkumar Rao film over a Shradha Kapoor film. But the thing is Newton disappointed me and Shradha is trying something new (at least for her caliber) in Haseena. Then why such biased reviews?
I would rather have critics be totally unbiased so that I get a good idea of a film's entertainment value before watching it.

Exactly. I felt the same after watching Shraddha in some of the trailers of Haseena. Her improvement in acting can be seen very clearly. Its visible. She has done a good job imo. In fact, you can check out some of the public reaction videos on YouTube, She's getting fabulous positive response from general public!

Critics are worthless specially in today's time when there are whole SM where you can actually get WOM which actually matters !

I watched this highly rated Death In a Gunj crap and honestly until last 15 mins I didnt even know it's some kind of thriller. Bored the hell out of me !! Didnt like it at all. And same with few other movies like Shahid !

My friend's watching Newton too and he isnt really impressed till now. Waiting for full review !!

We know not to trust people like Taran Adarsh and also that people like KRK speak crap about every other film and some industry folks pay them too.
But what about critics like Anupama and Masand? .. They don't look like the types who take bribes for their reviews. But in their case, there is another problem. They usually play down the masala films and the commercial actors and heave high praises on actors like Rajkumar Rao. I am not saying that there is anything wrong with that but I guess the review has to be for that particular film and the acting of the said actors in that particular role. But here looks like there is a reverse-influence going on i.e. how some other critics praise the commercial guys too much, the likes of Anupama/Masand praise the non-commercial ones too much.
To me, any kind of bias can lead to an unfair review. That is not good for the audience who are the actual ones to pay the money for watching the films, unlike these critics.

I think it all comes down to personal opinion. You may not have liked Newton, but the movie has became an official entry to Oscars. So the movie must had something which Haseena didn't.

As for Critics being biased, definitely they are. But I think they are more biased towards genres and not actors. Behen Hogi Teri also starring Rajkumar Rao didn't got any great reviews from critics. Anupama and Masand are more strict than biased IMO. They don't give high ratings easily to even the art films.

But at the end of the day critics are only giving their personal opinion. Their reviews shouldn't be taken as Universal truth. Box office too isn't a right parameter to judge whether a movie is good or bad. Because audience is also biased towards popular actors and certain genres. What matters most I'll say is the WOM of the"target audience". A movie like Trapped or A Death In Gunj isn't going to bring any record breaking collections. Critics are often criticised that they favor these type of films which aren't liked by the audience. They are actually liked by it's target audience, but the audience is so small that it doesn't reflects at the box office.
What critics need to do is stop being biased towards genres and try to rate the film for what it is trying to be, not what they want it to be.

Aren't we all biased in some form or another? Let's not pretend otherwise. Movies are a form of art and frankly, there's no hard and fast rules for judging art. At least journalists and professional critics have some sort of obligation to stay authentic and credible. They actually explain why they liked/disliked a certain movie/performance with reason and rationale. I find it laughable that people cite SM as authentic in order to debase critics. Who would rather you believe : someone who actually cares to explain the shortcomings and upsides? Or someone who writes a simple one word "LOL bakwaas" as a review and provides no proof of actually seeing the movie?
I would undoubtedly trust - if I have to - someone who has his credentials in the balance over herd-mentality. Having said that, I, by no means, intend to undersell authentic reviewers on social media. It's just that the number of trolls or fans of rival groups supersede them in numbers.

Everyone is biased. What you said here is your personal preference also. Shraddha has bad critical reputation because she has been terrible in most films. Rajkummar has built his positive critical reputation with years of good work. Also, that terrorist-glorifying film deserves no praise but I am "biased" as you say. I'd actually rather believe critics than fans who are only biased and have no neutrality whatsoever.

I wish you hadn't used this one as example. It really was tour de force act. It is one of those- Looks easy but very difficult to perform role. Beside Madame thrashed the movie. It was Bharadwaj who supported it.

Most reviewers are biased. They are humans too. Cinema Paradiso considered as one of the best movie for director was thrashed by Leading newspaper. Even generally considered as best movie of all time citizen Cane was thrashed. The parameter for what works is so differant. Audience and critics are very rarely on same page. Technically sublime movie can bore crap out of audience while no brain or loud movies may tickle their senses. Still India lacks reviewer who are really consistent.😊
