Are critics (even the genuine ones) unintentionally biased?

As others have said, everyone is biased. It's natural. We are biased by our beliefs, opinions, expectations, and - like it or not - others. We are social (almost herd) animals. Which is why I don't even always trust word of mouth - once the herd decides on a direction it is too easy to just fall in line. If you know word of mouth is bad you will subconsciously look for things to dislike and vice versa.

How many painters whose works are now valued at millions of dollars died poor and unappreciated? How many painters hailed as great in their lifetimes are all but forgotten now? The paintings didn't change - only critical opinion changed.

Most reviewers are biased. They are humans too. Cinema Paradiso considered as one of the best movie for director was thrashed by Leading newspaper. Even generally considered as best movie of all time citizen Cane was thrashed. The parameter for what works is so differant. Audience and critics are very rarely on same page. Technically sublime movie can bore crap out of audience while no brain or loud movies may tickle their senses. Still India lacks reviewer who are really consistent.😊
