Bareilly Ki Barfi Movie Review

Meena Iyer, TNN, Updated: Aug 18, 2017, 10.21 AM IST
CRITIC'S RATING: 4.0/5

THIS BARFI IS DEFINITELY WORTH A TRY

BAREILLY KI BARFI STORY: Bitti Mishra (Kriti) is a bohemian Bareilly girl who falls deeply in love with Pritam Vidrohi(Rajkummar) an author because she admires his progressive way of thinking. Finding him though proves to be as hard as looking for a needle in the haystack. So Bitti seeks the help of the local printing press-owner, Chirag Dubey (Ayushmann) on her journey of love.

BAREILLY KI BARFI REVIEW: BKB is a hooray moment for Hindi cinema. This romcom set in the North Indian town of Bareilly, breaks the shackles of Bollywood's continued dependence on cardboard cuts and instead introduces you to real people, whose charms are infectious. The writers Nitesh Tiwari (director and writer of the much-acclaimed blockbuster Dangal )and Shreyas Jain have put together a sweet, identifiable crowd-pleaser that excels in the writing, direction, acting and music departments.

As far as performances go--Rajkummar Rao is the scene-stealer. Whether he's the stammering sari salesman or the gali ka gunda, he is magnetic.

Kriti Sanon makes for a lovable Bitti and beti, while Ayushmann goes from white to grey so effortlessly you stay invested in him. Pankaj Tripathi and Seema Pahwa are also in fine fettle and you're actually tempted to ask them for an encore.

READ THIS STORY IN GUJARATI

Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari who won notices for her directorial debut Nil Battey Sannata, is in top form again. She puts heart into this comedy and the flawless writing makes it that much more effective.

Every time you guffaw at the antics of the lead and supporting cast, you are reminded that there is so much humour in our daily routine which we have forgotten to stop and savour.

Coming back to the protagonist, Bitti, she's the only daughter of a sweetmeat shop owner (Pankaj) and his conservative wife (Seema). Her dad raises her like a son, even allowing her the occasional puff and swig. In sharp contrast, her regular small-town Ma, who only wants to see her daughter hitched.

On a train journey, Bitti accidentally ends up devouring a novel titled Bareilly Ki Barfi and here comes a twist in the tale. Not only does she identify with the lead character of the book, she also desperately seeks the author. She starts spending a lot of time with Chirag, they become besties, too, and he promises to help find her Pritam-pyaare.

Javed Akhtar's voice-over introducing the characters and situations is breezy, once again thanks to the funny punches. Quite like the money-spinner Tanu Weds Manu and its sequel, this film too keeps you invested in its rain and shine moments. As a bonus you get the peppy Sweety Tera Drama and Twist Kamariya tracks, both of which will get you grooving. Bite into this barfi for sure; it is bound to lift your spirits.

Movies like this get all the praise on social media when their trailer drops, and actors like RR also get praised, but funnily enough no one goes to watch them. Strange phenomenon of our times.

BAREILLY KI BARFI MOVIE REVIEW

By Kunal Guha, Mumbai Mirror

Critic's Rating: 3.5/5

That love triangles don't culminate in a happily-ever-after for everyone involved (unless a threesome is considered) makes them rather predictable. Explored and imagined in every possible permutation, the construct can't stray away from the inevitable: boy meets girl, girl meets another boy, both boys vie for girl's attention and eventually, her heart melts for one and condenses the other's. The equation furnished here isn't much different, but the stunts and shenanigans the curiously-crafted leads partake in, makes this a cute date film.

Opening with a narration by Javed Akhtar, one is introduced to the anything-but-normal Mishra family from Bareilly. Bitti Mishra (Kriti Sanon), the only daughter of a mithai-shop owner (Pankaj Tripathi) and his wife (Seema Pahwa), feels she's one of a kind. But her parents, like her bigoted and chauvinist suitors, fail to understand what exactly that kind is. When she chances upon Bareilly Ki Barfi, a tome whose lead she identifies with, she's blown by the author's reading of her innermost thoughts. Naturally, she wants to hunt him down. The novel happens to be a rant by brooding lover Chirag Dubey (Ayushmann Khurrana) as a tribute to his unrequited love. Afraid of giving away too much, he uses a pen name, which happens to belong to a friend Pritam Vidrohi (Rajkummar Rao), a sari salesman whose mother wants him to get hitched. Needless to say, Dubey's doobie-eyed for Bitti. But since she's cracked her barfi for Vidrohi, he must first furnish him in an unpleasant light before he can win her over. This tedious setup leads to hilarious situations and while it's easy to predict how things will fold up, one is kept entertained through a large part of the proceedings.

Contrary to the film's narration which labours to paint the Mishras as the quirkiest clan in Bareilly, they're actually very average. But this is one of the film's strengths. With every filmmaker climbing over the other to draft families which gobble up the 'function' from dysfunctional, meeting one that is purely like any other is refreshing. Also, the father-daughter equation furnished here breaks the notions of patriarchy one associates with small towns. For instance, the papa here is not only aware and accepting of his beti's smoking habit, but also doesn't shy away from bumming one off her when constipated.

Rajkummar Rao shines all through for lacing his Vidrohi, initially as a stammering introvert, and later, as a overconfident upstart. His ability to essay these diametrically opposite avatars with equal flourish can be compared to playing both Naseeruddin Shah's and Farooq Sheikh's character in Katha. One fumbles with spelling his heart, the other's a manipulative charmer. Kriti Sanon's brief career has seen her in dispensable roles which contained her as an actor. But here, the world revolves around her Bitti who is an 'every girl' a dreamer who is unsure of what she seeks yet decidedly unwilling to negotiate with what she desires. Sanon envelopes herself in Bitti's many moods and is unobjectionable. Ayushmann Khurrana seems at home as Dubey as much as he has been in all the 'Delhi ka launda' roles he has played in the past. Both Pankaj Tripathi and Seema Pahwa deliver as Bitti's doting and concerned parents and help elevate the film.

Following her impressive directorial debut in Nil Battey Sannata, Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari approaches this romcom with the heart of a Sai Paranjpye and the wit of a David Dhawan. But the money here lies in the writing and Dangal director Nitesh Tiwari conveys even the mundane in a manner to evoke delight. So, when Vidrohi manages to accidentally charm Bitti's folks by administering a move that relieves her papa off his neck pain, the VO announces, "Vidrohi ne papa ki gardan seedhi aur love ki baazi ulti kar di."

'Bareilly Ki Barfi' Review: Trio of Kriti Sanon, Ayushmann Khurrana, Rajkummar Rao make a delightful entertainer

HARSHADA REGE | Fri, 18 Aug 2017-10:04am , Mumbai , DNA

Simple narrative, in-sync music, and clever writing are the strong suits of 'Bareilly Ki Barfi.'

Movie: Bareilly Ki Barfi

Director: Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari

Cast: Ayushmann Khurrana, Kriti Sanon, Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, and Seema Pahwa

What's it about:

The movie is inspired by the English translation of a French book, titled Ingredients of Love and makes a smooth shift from Paris (in the novel) to Bareilly. The Mishra family - father (Pankaj Tripathi), mother (Seema Pahwa) and daughter Bitti (Kriti Sanon) live in Bareilly. Bitti had been brought up in a liberal environment. She is bold and brash, and this results in a couple of broken engagements. After another marriage proposal goes awry, Bitti chances upon a novel titled Bareilly KI Barfi, the protagonist of which is very similar to her. She begins a search for the author, which leads her to Chirag Dubey (Ayushmann Khurrana), a printing press owner, who had authored and printed the book five years ago after a heartbreak. Not wanting to put his name on the book, he had used his friend Pritam Vidrohi's (Rajkummar Rao) name. Which leads Pritam to leave his city and take up a job in Lucknow. Now Chirag begins up the charade of being the messenger between her and the author. However, things take a crazy turn when Chirag decides to track his friend and prove how unsuitable he is for Bitti. What happens next, forms the crux of the movie.

What's hot:

The writing is clever and the humour, clean. Writers Nitesh Tiwari and Shreyas Jain keep the characters real and rooted. The protagonists we see here, thankfully, aren't painted in just one shade. Ayushmann may be a guy smitten with the girl, but he isn't another Mr Goody-Two-Shoes ready to sacrifice his love. He is selfish and a borderline bully. Rajkummar is a pushover, but he can stand-up for himself, Kriti while being a confident girl, has her share of insecurities. Director Ashwiny keeps the narrative simple. The music is in-sync with the tone of the film. Ayushmann is on point with his character. Despite the flaws in his character, you root for him. Rajkummar is a delight as he switches from a meek guy to a rowdy dude back-and-forth easily. While Kriti shares great chemistry with both the actors, it's the scenes between Ayushmann and Rajkummar that draw maximum laughs. This is Kriti's fourth film and definitely her best performance so far. Pankaj and Seema are great performers and add so much depth to the film.

What's not:

The editing could have been sharper. The film does drag at times and shortening the narrative would have helped. The reason behind Ayushmann wanting to portray Rajkummar as an unsuitable candidate seems a bit flimsy, especially considering the fact that this is what a large part of the movie is based on.

What to do:

This is an entertaining, romantic film laced with humour and feel-good moments. Watch it, you won't be disappointed.

Ratings: ***

Bareilly Ki Barfi review: Kriti, Ayushmann and Rajkummar's delectable rom-com is 2017's sweetest rescue

Rating: 3.5/5 stars

By Mihika Sarangi, TIMES NOW

Small town chronicles have become the new pit stop for the Indian film industry. After being slammed for making films surrounding townie associations and projecting lives of the creamy layer, films such as Bareilly Ki Barfi are nothing less than a fresh and saccharine breather of genuine story projection.

The main story of the movie, fluently narrated by the articulate Javed Akhtar, revolves around the rebellious and defiant Bitti (Kriti Sanon), who is rejected by every probable but misogynistic groom that her parents (Pankaj Tripathi and Seema Pahwa) find for her. Different, from other girls living in the streets of the small town, she is defined by characteristics like smoking, break dancing and watching English films.

Dejected, she finds solace in a book called Bareilly Ki Barfi, originally written by Chirag Dubey (Ayushmann Khurrana) but the masquerade writer being Pritam Vidrohi (Rajkummar Rao) which is coincidently based on a character named Bubbly, a girl exactly like Bitti.

Rejoiced with this discovery, Bitti begins a hunt for the writer and meets Chirag who gets smitten by her but refuses to disclose the reality about his book. The wheels get going when Bitti insists on meeting Pritam (as according to the book, he's the writer). This sweet and sour voyage turns into a rather predictable love triangle, but, with a piquant twist.

The fine casting of the film makes it an authentic delivery. Although Kriti Sanon's accent fluctuates at times, she undoubtedly delivers her best performance till date. Ayusmann Khurranna perfectly fits the bill of an unrequited lover.

But the actor that undeniably takes the cake away with his fine acting prowess is none other than Rajkummar Rao who brilliantly fits into his double character a calm saree vendor and a brash gully ka gunda.

The comic chemistry of Pankaj Tripathi, Seema Pahwa and Rahul Choudhary (Chirag's friends) is the silver platting of the Barfi and will leave everyone in splits.

After directing a masterpiece like Nil Battey Sannata, Ashwini Iyer Tiwari along with cinematographer Gavemic U Ary perfectly captures the essence of the worn out yet inviting lanes of the town. She seamlessly crafts the entire movie around satirical and charming sequences that smell of substance.

The film is stuffed with radiantly sought after dialogues written by the Dangaldirector Nitesh Tiwari (also Ashwini's husband) along with Shreyas Jain and Rajat Noria. They are crunchy, entertainingly sensible and grab the local nuances tightly.

The garnishing on this barfi is the music that smoothly blends with the flow of the story. Where songs such as Sweety Tera Drama and Twist Kamariya are typical wedding renditions, Nazm Nazm and Bairaagi sooth their way to your heart. The movie also gets much of its charm from the background score which has been smartly composed according to the changing moods of the film.

Bareilly Ki Barfi is a syrupy rom com adorned with hints of tang. Although the film falls flat at times when it comes to the screenplay, it certainly keeps the audience gripped through its bungee yet subtle plot. The seamless acting and immaculate writing and direction make you trust the legitimacy of the storyline proving it to be a charismatic crowd-pleaser

Bareilly Ki Barfi Movie Review: A delicious rom-com with a sweet-toothed twist

By Vishal Verma, Glamsham Editorial

Bareilly - a city right in the middle of Lucknow and Delhi is the centre for this rom-com set in the rustic Hindi heartland. Known earlier in Bollywood as the city where the yesteryears lovely lady Sadhana lost her 'jhumka' in Raj Khosla's classic MERA SAAYA (1966), the city is remembered again but not for the lost 'jhumka' as Javed Akhtar rightly points out in the voice over but for the deliciously sweet, quirky and irresistible feeling of love told in a tongue-in-cheek manner with a sweet-toothed twist and decorated performance from Kirti Sanon, Ayushmann Khurrana and Rajkummar Rao.

BAREILLY KI BARFI adapted from the French novel 'Ingredients of Love' by Nicolas Barreau is the second film from Ashwini Iyer Tiwari the helmer who masterly crafted NIL BATTEY SANNATA - a heartfelt, affecting, motivating, significant, relevant parable that hailed the power of woman and motherhood giving Swara Bhaskar her finest and the most shining moments of her career till date.

Without any iota of doubt, BAREILLY KI BARFI does the same for Kirti Sanon what NIL BATTEY SANNATA did for Swara Bhaskar, giving Kirti Sanon her most cherished moments as an actress till date in this author backed role as the bubbly Bitti Mishra (Kriti Sanon), raised as a son by her father played by Pankaj Tripathi who owns a sweet shop. Bitti loves to smoke occasionally and doesn't mind drinking whiskey straight from the bottle and enjoys the thrill of watching pirated copies of Hollywood movies with her limited knowledge of the English language and her impulsive gig at break-dance on terrace makes her a live wire on her own. Strangely, this open minded character comes with a myopic belief that smoking and drinking is cool and progressive but considering it as a main stream entertainer, Bitti is accepted for her irresistible charm and we move on.

Struggling to find her match and fed up with constant rejection and her mother played by Seema Pahwa's unending rants for staying 'kunwari' at home, Bitti Mishra decides to elope. Waiting for her train at a vacant railway station, Bitti gets in contact with a book 'Bareilly Ki Barfi' and her life changes. The central character of the book resembles Bitti and overwhelmed by that fact that people like her do exist in reality makes her feel special invoking a desire to meet the author. The author and publisher of the book Chirag Dubey (Ayushmann Khurrana) gets to know about Bitti through his friend who is a book vendor at the railway station. Occupied by his own miseries instead of rushing in, Chirag applies the wait and watch policy and fabricates a story involving Pritam Vidrohi (Rajkummar Rao), whose name and photograph features as the book's author. What happens next finds the crux of this sweet rom com that has a delightful twist.

The writers Nitesh Tiwari and Shreyas Jain maintain the small town middle-class milieu of the Hindi heartland to perfection. Keeping it tongue-in-cheek with healthy humor, delightful and quirky situations BAREILLY KI BARFI remains constantly engaging. The characters are identifiable and likable speaking dialogues driven from our everyday life like 'Dekho toh raat bhar gumti hai, ladki hai koi chudail toh nahi'

Like her previous film Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari's narration is lyrical and simple. More on the mainstream format and working on a known genre of Bollywood rom-coms that has its common elements, the helmer does a remarkable job in bringing freshness in the narrative. The movie moves smoothly like a delightful evening with your valentine.

Kriti Sanon fits perfectly as Bitti and charms you throughout. She steals your heart in this author backed role that gives her all the opportunity to explore and she fits the bill. Ayushmann Khurrana's character gives a faint remembrance of his character in MERI PYARI BINDU but later it dips into different shades giving him the scope to improvise and he does it with delight.

Rajkummar Rao is the one who gets the extra bite of this sweet barfi in his role as Pritam Vidrohi, aptly named, the actor's exceptional transition from being a shy, saree selling salesman to a street smart rogue is sheer brilliance. Rao rules the second half with his amazing act. Outstanding.

Pankaj Mishra and Seema Pahwa are outstanding in adding major value as Mummy and Papa.

Technically superb with first rate production values. Gavemic U Ary's peeping cinematography adds a new dimension.

Music by Arko Pravo Mukherjee, Tanishk Bagchi, Samira Koppikar, Sameer Uddin and Vayu is good and peppy numbers like 'Sweety Tera Drama' and 'Twist Kamariya' keeps you going.

But in no way, BAREILLY KI BARFI is the one to be missed. Ashwini Iyer Tiwari has fulfilled the desires of a feel good mainstream rom-com in BAREILLY KI BARFI. It is delightfully sweet, delicious, comes with a twist and is powered by top notch performance from Kirti Sanon, Ayushmann Khurrana and Rajkummar Rao.
