Priyanka Chopra Developing Comedy Series About Bollywood Star at ABC (EXCLUSIVE)

ABC is developing a comedy series about a former Bollywood star executive produced by Priyanka Chopra, Variety has learned exclusively.

The currently untitled single-camera series would follow a former Bollywood star who settles down in the suburbs of America with her bi-cultural family and tries to bring her colorful lifestyle to an otherwise dull town. The series is based on the real life of Madhuri Dixit, who will also executive produce.

Sri Rao, a Bollywood writer and a writer for shows like "General Hospital: Night Shift, will pen the pilot and executive produce, as will Dixit's husband, Sriram Nene. Mark Gordon and Nick Pepper will executive produce through the Mark Gordon Company (MGC), which currently produces "Ray Donovan, "Grey's Anatomy, and "Quantico, among many other shows. ABC Studios will co-produce with MGC.

Chopra, herself a Bollywood star, currently stars on "Quantico, which is going into its third season. She is repped by WME and managed by Anjula Acharia. Rao is repped by CAA and Kleinberg Lange Cuddy & Carlo.

This fall, ABC is set to debut the medical drama "The Good Doctor starring Freddie Highmore, Marvel series "Inhumans with Anson Mount and Iwan Rheon, the Kyra Segdwick-led drama "Ten Days in the Valley, comedy series "The Mayor from executive producer and "Hamitlon breakout Daveed Diggs, and "Kevin (Probably) Saves the World, formerly "The Gospel of Kevin.

ABC's other new series orders "Alex Inc., "The Crossing, "Deception, "For the People, and "Splitting Up Together will debut at midseason.

Will they reveal why the star and her surgeon husband give up their comfortable existence and return home to a non-existent career?

Isn't there a similar show "Black-ish" already? Except its about a black family in predominantly white suburb...

Poor ABC, after the "all-white" oscar accusation is trying so hard and PC is reaping the full benefits 😊

Yay to all-Indian cast but hope this doesn't flop like Outsourced.

ABC has been targeting minority viewers for many years now. They have/had Scandal, Quantico. How to Get Away with Murder, Dr. Ken, Fresh off the Boat, Blackish..

It has nothing to do with the Oscars. ABC only airs them on their channel, nothing more.

A family comedy focusing on Indians sounds pretty good to me but I hope they don't focus much on the Bollywood stuff. Then it won't last because it will be too weird for the general audience.

There's a long time to go for that. It's only in development right now. Then it has to get a pilot order. After that it has to get picked up as a series. A lot of pilots get discarded.

But Outsourced was a bad idea. People were pissed about losing their jobs to the third world and then there was a show made about that third world office set in another country. People can't relate to that.

This sounds more normal. Just showing a desi family in the US with a bit of a BW twist.

Have to respect PC's game. She is still new there but has a clear long-term plan. Turning producer for a tv show is the way to go. Now that major A-listers are making tv the new playground. Peak tv season in HW.

Don't know how this will work. All depends on how the pilot turns out. But , jeez, this woman is smart.

^She's smart and ambitious. Credit where credit is due. She will keep her name floating in India too with her regional movies.

She doesn't have to worry about her acting career ending or tapering off
