Now, that explosion may have to wait. Reports suggest that the much anticipated crossover between Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan has been put on hold, with financial realities forcing a rethink before the project even reached the production stage.

According to a report by Deccan Chronicle, the ambitious film has been stalled due to mounting costs. Backed by Yash Raj Films, Tiger vs Pathaan was envisioned as a flagship chapter in the expanding YRF Spy Universe. However, the scale that made the project exciting also made it expensive.

Industry chatter points to the reported remuneration of both leading stars as a major sticking point. It is believed that the studio would need to shell out nearly Rs 100 crore each to secure Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. Combined with the massive production scale expected from a spy thriller of this magnitude, the numbers quickly escalated.

Born After Pathaan’s Historic Success

The idea for the crossover reportedly gained momentum after the blockbuster run of Pathaan, which reenergised theatrical business for Hindi cinema. Shah Rukh Khan’s return to the big screen was not just successful, it reignited audience appetite for larger than life action dramas.

With Salman Khan’s Tiger already established as a fan favourite, merging the two franchises felt like a natural next step. Producer Aditya Chopra was said to be keen on mounting the project on a grand scale, complete with elaborate action sequences and international set pieces. That ambition, however, significantly pushed up the projected budget.

The timing may also be working against the film. Production expenses across the industry have surged in recent years, from action choreography to visual effects and overseas schedules. Mounting a spectacle that matches audience expectations now demands deeper pockets than ever before.

Under current market conditions, studios are said to be cautious about committing to ultra high budgets without clear recovery pathways. Even with two megastars attached, financial prudence appears to have taken precedence.

Also, considering the packed schedules otherwise and the choice of projects of both Khans as of now, a film with only the two megastars seems a further longshot than ever.

As of now, 2026 will be seeing both Salman and Shah Rukh have a release where Salman is really vying for a hit for the longest time now amidst the back-to-back failures of Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan and Sikandar with Tiger 3 being an average grosser. And with Shah Rukh, his triple whammy of 2023 was a gargantuan success with Pathaan, Jawan and Dunki and now, after another almost three year hiatus, he will be having his next big release in the form of KING.

Until then, the dream of seeing Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan headline a full length spy showdown remains in limbo. For fans of the YRF Spy Universe, the wait just got longer.
