Durdhara OS
"It is a healthy baby boy."Nandhini whispered to Durdhara in her ear softly in a tear strained voice. Durdhara smiled weakly looking at Chandra hold their baby close to him with Nandhini by his side. It was a perfect sight .Tears flowed copiously while Durdhara tried to smile at them. Chandra admonished her in an angry tear strained voice "Who thanks people by giving up their life? Was it so difficult to put up with me?"Someone said that the best moments of your life flash right before your eyes when you are about to die. They sure were right. Durdhara saw the most cherished moments of her life flow like a river before her eyes. Samrat Chandragupt Maurya always managed to be in all of them. A small smile escaped her lips as she thought of the found memory how she had taught him the best way to ask money from her father. They had come a long way since then- Best friends to taking the marital vows to now giving him the heir of Magadha Dynasty.
The Vedji had informed her during the early stages of pregnancy that her body was not strong enough to bring another life to this world. She had refused to abort the baby. It was her only way of thanking Chandra for always being by her side and for letting her be a part of his life. She had quietly taken a promise from Vedji to maintain it a secret from the royal family. Helena was smart may be cunning too. Nandhini was courageous and fierce. Durdhara was neither of them but she was grateful to Chandra for saving her from the loveless marriage she would have ended up with. The family rejoiced the coming of the heir in a grand manner. Everyday had become a reason to celebrate as it brought them closer to the day they would see their heir. The Royal Kitchen cooked food keeping in mind her likes and dislikes. Her father came to visit her, to caress her and speak loving words to the baby in the womb. Maybe the first time he never tried to calculate the gain he would make through her. Durdhara was naive but never blind to the realities around her.
She had playfully secured a promise from Nandhini to never let her baby feel the absence of a mother in the presence of Chandra. Nandhini, true to her word, stood by her side holding her palm with one hand and stroking her hair with another trying to soothe her and put her to ease. Little did she know that the birth of the child would result in durdhara's death. Chandra was on his way to the palace after meeting his little nephew and his beloved sister. Durdhara crushed Nandhini's fingers unable to bear the pain, letting out huge cries as well. The entire exercise of pushing the baby tired her a lot, draining her of the physical strength. The baby was cutting through Durdhara's womb like a sword leading in excessive bleeding; she was losing the little strength she seemed to beget slowly losing consciousness. "Maharani, we need to revive her. She is slipping away." The medics informed Nandhini with utmost urgency as they attended to Durdhara. Nandhini held Durdhara's tender fingers firmly and spoke "Durdhara, everything is fine. Your child is healthy and fighting his way out to enter the world just like his father. Hold on, He's closer to entering the world." Durdhara winced and gave a mighty scream as she pushed Bindusara finally out of her womb and fell back with a thud on her bed. Nandhini was told to wait outside as the medics rushed around Durdhara and the baby.
Mora and others awaited anxiously outside the chamber. Chandra was walking to and fro in the lobby awaiting the news about Durdhara and the child. He questioned Nandhini as he saw her come out of Durdhara's Chamber "Is Durdhara fine? How is the baby?" Nandhini looked at Chandra unsure of what to say, before she could speak. The Vedji had called for them to speak to them inside the chamber.
Chandra and Nandhini entered the chamber and greeted the Vedji. He handed the baby to Nandhini and spoke after a quite pause.
"Maharaj! I have good news and bad news for you today. The Good news is that Rani Durdhara has given birth to a healthy baby boy , the heir of Magadha." He spoke in composed manner and took a pause again.
Chandra unable to bare the silence asked the Vedji to speak what he had to say.
"Maharaj! I have to deliver an unfortunate message to you and Maharani. Rani Durdhara has asked me to inform you personally about this. She will not live to see her child grow into a warrior. Her womb was not strong enough to bear the child and I had informed her of this. She requested me to keep this as a secret till the Royal Heir was born."
Chandra's world came crashing down as he processed the words of the Vedji and rushed to meet Durdhara in her Chamber.
"How could you do this? Why? Was I such a bad friend?" he asked feeling the rage and grief all at once. Durdhara motioned for him to sit in a fragile voice.
"Chandra, Sit ...Please" Chandra looked at her and sat down lowering his head in a bid to hide his tears. Durdhara held his palm gently and pressed it softly and continued to speak "I believe in always twice as much as you receive, you gave me respect, affection, love and our child. You gave me everything a wife would want from her husband. I want one more thing from you. Promise me that you and Nandhini will raise our child together and never let my absence be felt."
Nandhini stood in shock holding little Bindu in her hands, she knew better , She went to Durdhara and showed her , their child "It is a healthy boy." Durdhara smiled and kissed the child "I will love you always and beyond always" and looked at Chandra and Nandhini holding her child standing together. This was how it was supposed to be. She felt inner peace at once and passed a wide smile at Nandhini and Chandra . Nandhini understood her inner thoughts in a minute and spoke softly , "I promise to mother our child with the love and affection of the 2 mothers."Durdhara smiled and went into endless sleep with a content smile face on her face.
Note: Constructive criticism is welcome. This is how I wanted Durdhara's death to be shown. No saas-bahu drama with Helena. On a personal note , I miss Durdhara a lot on the show.
