Several publications are calling out Katy Perry for what they are calling, "sexually assaulting" Shawn Mendes at the iHeart Music Awards red carpet.

While Shawn Mendes was being interviewed on the iHeartRadio red carpet last Sunday night, Katy Perry walked by and decided to grab his butt. Now the awkward exchange, which you can watch below, is raising serious questions among fans about double standards and sexual harassment. But plenty of others pointed out that few people would be laughing if the roles had been reversed. If a 32-year-old man fondled the butt of an 18-year-old woman he didn't know, would anybody find her flustered response funny? Almost definitely not. They'd call the man's actions sexual assault (correctly, I should note).

Even Mendes understood the double standards involved in this type of situation.
"What if you grabbed her butt back?" one of the interviewers teased Mendes.
"No, I cannot do that," Mendes replied in a serious-tone. "That's not a game. That's not a joke."

Here's the reality: When Perry grabbed Mendes' butt, it was sexual assault. Full stop. No discussion.
A lot of people are going to deny that fact. They are wrong. Perry grabbed a body part of a person she had never met without his consent. That is not OK.

Not only was Shawn confused, but fans were as well. Many pointed out that this is a double standard and if Shawn had grabbed Katy's butt, it would be the biggest headline of the day. The fact is, a lot of times, we don't see women sexualizing men. We don't see women touching men in ways that they don't want to be touched or without their consent.

Is Mendes OK with the violation of his personal space and bodily autonomy? He did say that he was a huge Katy Perry fan after the butt-touching went down, so maybe he feels his butt has been blessed by the touch of a goddess. Still, Perry should probably get consent the next time she feels like telekinetically touching a butt.
