My observation: People tend to lap up whatever a climber throws at them. They are like.. Chalo, bachcha/i seekh raha/i hai. They easily get forgiveness from their fans and media. But when you've already climbed to the top, they want something extra.. Not only detractors.. even fans start saying negative things because they felt disappointed for you didn't serve them something new.

This is the reason whatever VD, Tiger, Shraddha etc (climbers). have been doing people are lapping them up. Whatever negative things people want to say they say that during the trailer/song release.. and then they forget about it. Movie shaanti se release hote hai, aur chal bhi jaate hai. And this is the reason whatever SRK, HR, Bira, etc. have been doing are getting trashed equally by detractors, media and sometimes fans as well. Jab tak yeh log naya khana serve nahi karenge, tab tak Friday morning se hi Trimurti Reviewers type logo ke aur phir janta ka kaher toot padenge.

Climbers are not considered threat to people at the top, but one topper is a threat to another. That's why you'd see negative publicity when a topper's movie releases, but no negativity when a climber's movie releases. That's why a climber's thakela movie sails through, but a topper's thakela movie sinks.

Awcutee.. budget was not in control. Nadiad and UTV lied, and people bought it. If I'm not wrong Taran or someone else tweeted the budget was over 40 crore.

Makes a lot of sense especially seen in context of SRK, RK movie getting so much bashing. People who will anyway not see the movie in the cinema are so worried about their movies.
I will also say good work done in 2-3 films are also carried forward. Like people will accept 2-3 mediocre films from Aamir, Salman, Akshay since they have done 2-3 good films line se or atleast one very good one.

Interesting question.

I think the Indian audience wants to be entertained and to some extent, yes they are script conscious in the sense that the story has to appeal to them. That doesn't mean that all good scripts work. As has been mentioned, a big star certainly makes an engaging script more appealing.

I think its more just script consciousness
any middle class family can afford a trip to Europe now.

All the OTT things that were dream for normal people, they are more or less reality.
Even beaches and bikini

Rural people also have smart phones, they know what is happening, they also keep up.

So allures of these things are slowly fading out.
People want to enjoy their time however way its possible.

When they go in for a salman khan movie, that man's presence alone is enough for their money.
Add to that the overpriced multiplex tickets.

Its fine for someone like me, who watches a movie once a year or so, but people who regularly go to movies for entertainment, why would they spend so much money if they get nothing out of it?

More so than before so yes, however, still have a bit to go as the Khan films even if they're crap don't flop as badly. i think it's also to do with more people taking more of an interest in indies so they're being exposed to really good acting and can differentiate between good and bad acting.
