Chapter 9
Khushi poked his shoulder. Arnav grumbled and stayed glued to his phone, typing away. She poked him again. He nudged his shoulder and replied an email.
They were in his car, being driven by Mohanji to his house. While Khushi had no issues with making sweets as she was an expert, she felt slightly nervous at the prospect of meeting his family.
Would his entire family be bipolar, just like him? She swallowed.
She looked back to her boss who may as well have been married to his phone. She poked him once more. No response. Khushi frowned. This no-talking-for-a-whole-day would drive her crazy. On top of that, now he was ignoring her too?
Fine, she decided. She would make sure that Arnavji turned crazy too, by the end of the night.
Finally they reached the driveway and Mohanji announced their arrival. Khushi didn't spare a glance to the surroundings, but instead tried to get his attention. She was about to poke him again but he opened the door and got out of the car. She gaped at his retreating back; he was already heading towards his house without her.
Laad Governor!
She gave a thumbs up and then waved her hand at Mohanji and scrambled out of the car, not waiting to see if Mohanji understood her hand gesture as her way of thanking him for the ride. She had to brisk walk just to keep up with him.
She wanted to know about his family before she met them. She tried for the last time to get his attention. She tugged on his sleeve. He barely glanced at her. She pursed her lips. Arnav stood in front of the door and rang the doorbell.
Khushi stood slightly behind him, hands on her hips, frustrated with him acting as if she were invisible. She stuck out her tongue at him but quickly started to cough when he turned around at that precise moment just to check on her. At his suspicious look, she beamed at him to cover up her sticking out her tongue.
As they waited for someone to open the door, she finally cast her gaze in front of the place she was standing and felt her jaw fall open. Were they at the right place?
This seemed like a palace.. surely he was no Rajkumar.
She gaped at the building structure, the white color adding to the elegance. She tugged at his sleeve. He just gave her a look that told her to shut up. She fumed internally.
The doors opened and she looked at the lady in front of her. She was tall, pretty and dressed fashionably in a baby sink sari. "Chotte!" She smiled widely. Khushi looked on in wonder, trying to find Chotte.
"Yes, Di" Arnav sighed as he greeted his sister. Khushi's eyes widened and stifled a laugh. Baba Arnavji was known as Chotte at home? That just made her mood get better. Arnav shot Khushi a look and she looked down to the floor.
Anjali's attention went to the woman standing beside her chotte and she stopped short for a second. Who was she? Arnav noticed Anjali looking at Khushi curiously and so he made introductions.
"Come on in" He called over his shoulder to Khushi as he went into the house to face his family. Nani, mami and mama were seated in the hall, relaxing. Khushi stood frozen at the door, suddenly feeling nervous. But when Anjali smiled at her warmly and invited her in, Khushi smiled right back and entered.
Except she never did enter. No, she fell down and lay sprawled on the floor, hissing in pain. Anjali gasped, moving forward to help her but unable to move efficiently due to her limp.
"Khushi!" Arnav was the first to reach her and he crouched down to examine her before glaring up at the person responsible for her fall. What was he doing here?
N bloody K.
"Oh god! I'm so sorry! Mujhe maaf karo! Maine aapko thukraya" NK's worried voice reached mami and she squealed with joy at having her nephew from Sydney join her. NK pushed his luggage aside and bent down to help Khushi up but Arnav moved closer to her, forcing NK to move back. Khushi bit her lip, her ankle throbbing as she's tripped over the step when NK barged into her at the door.
[Mujhe maaf karo! Maine aapko thukraya - Forgive me. I rejected you]
"NK, my nephew from Kidney! Babua, thukraya nahi, takraya" Mami corrected him lovingly.
[Babua, thukraya nahi, takraya - Not rejected you, crashed into you]
NK pulled his ear. "Haan, haan, wahi" NK fixed his concerned eyes on Khushi who was slowly standing up with the help of his beloved Nannav.
[Haan, haan, wahi - Yes, yes, that's what I meant]
When NK reached out to grab her arm, Arnav growled softly. "Let it be" He snaked one arm around her petite waist, trying not to notice how slim she was, and supported her weight against himself.
"Tum theek ho?" Arnav looked deep into her eyes, genuine concern reflecting in his eyes. But she was busy looking at NK.
[Tum theek ho? - Are you okay?]
What the - was she ignoring him? That too for what, to look at NK? NK looked at her apologetically.
"I'm really sorry. I didn't mean to.." NK trailed off, looking at the sweet face of the woman in front of him. Khushi was about to open her mouth to reassure him that she was fine, but then remembered her boss's order of keeping quiet.
This man! Just what did he think of himself? First he ordered her to keep quiet, then he ignored her all the way in the car, and then only recognized her existence when she'd fallen? Well, she would repay the favor and ignore him too. So she ignored his Tum Theek Ho and looked steadily at NK and smiled at him, hoping he'd understand that she was fine.
Arnav gritted his teeth as Khushi refused to look at him and instead smiled at that NK. That oaf.
"Aap theek toh hai na?" Anjali put her hand on Khushi's arm. Khushi smiled warmly at her and nodded.
[Aap theek toh hai na? - Are you alright?]
"Chotte, bring her in. And NK babua, you too come in. Bring your luggage" Nani's kind voice called out.
Arnav tugged Khushi along, letting her hobble against him as she tried not to put pressure on her throbbing ankle. Arnav groaned as NK started his rambling. "I'm really sorry. Forgive me please. I didn't see you, I was so excited to come in that.. Are you okay?"
Khushi smiled at him. Mami nudged Mama. "Girne ki vaja se gungi ho gayi kaa?" Mami wondered in a hush tone. Mama shushed her.
[Girne ki vaja se gungi ho gayi kaa? - Has she been rendered mute due to the fall?]
Arnav heard her and he looked at Khushi who still ignored him. Before he made her sit on the sofa, he leaned in to whisper. "You can speak. " Khushi looked at him instantly with suspicion. He sighed. "I won't cut your salary" He sat her down. She was relieved.
"Bitiya, aap theek toh hai? Zyada dard toh nahi ho raha hai na?" Nani sat beside her. Khushi smiled gratefully at the elder woman, already liking his family. At least they weren't akhdu like their chotte.
[Bitiya, aap theek toh hai? Zyada dard toh nahi ho raha hai na? - Child, are you okay? Doesn't hurt too much, does it?]
"Nahi, hum theek hai. Shukriya" Khushi replied, dancing with joy as she finally spoke. She tried to get up, wanting to take her blessings but Nani forced her to sit back down.
[Nahi, hum theek hai. Shukriya - No, I am fine. Thank you]
"Woh, aap kuch bol nahi rahi thi iss liye laga ke.." Nani looked at her closely. Who was this traditionally dressed woman that chotte had brought along with him? Anjali too burned with the same question in her mind. Nk went to drag his trolley luggage in. Arnav came to stand beside the sofa near Khushi.
[Woh, aap kuch bol nahi rahi thi iss liye laga ke - Actually, you weren't saying anything before so we thought you were hurt badly]
How could I have said anything when your bipolar of a grandson had forbidden me to?' Khushi muttered to herself. Arnav narrowed his eyes at her, having heard her.
"Chotte, she.." Anjali urged him to introduce her. Arnav cleared his throat. "This is Khushi. She works for me as my PA." He announced and pretended not to notice the surprise on their faces.
"She will also be catering the sweets for the upcoming prayers. And will deliver the saris. Lucknowi. Just like you wanted" He faced Nani and Di.
"Aap Lucknow se hai?" A delighted Nani asked. Khushi nodded cheerfully and told them a little about herself.
[Aap Lucknow se hai? - You are from Lucknow?]
NK left his luggage by the corridor and went to Khushi, almost knocking his Nannav off his feet when he tried to stand beside the sofa near Khushi.
"I'm really sorry, again. I am NK" NK held out his hand for her to shake.
"Hum Khushi" She said sweetly and NK grinned at her. "Hum bhi bahut khushi"
[Hum bhi bahut Khushi - I am also very happy]
Arnav rolled his eyes, calling on his patience to not strangle NK because of his poor Hindi. But it seemed like Khushi was liking it, by the way she was giggling. "My name is Khushi" She corrected him and shook his hand. Arnav clenched his fists at the sight of the two of them laughing as if they were childhood friends.
NK went around, taking blessings from Mami, Mama and Nani. He hugged Di affectionately and saved Arnav for last. Aakash wasn't home yet. Lucky Aakash, thought Arnav.
"Nannav mere bhai!" NK enveloped Arnav into a hug who groaned at the stupid Nannav nickname.
[Nannav mere bhai! - Nannav, my bro!]
Arnav awkwardly stood there, trying to wiggle out. Khushi giggled at the look of discomfort on his face. He stared at her and she looked away. Arnav raised an eyebrow. Was she still ignoring him? He tested his theory after he pushed NK away from the suffocating hug.
"Khushi" He called out, trying to make her respond to him. She shifted further in her seat to face Nani who talked to her fondly. Even his Di was engaged in a pleasant conversation with Khushi, giggling away as if they were best friends. Great. So NK, Nani and Di were already being so familiar with her. Specially NK, who was currently telling her some joke.
Having so much fun with NK huh? How dare she ignore ASR? He was going crazy with the way she refused to address him. "Khushi" He said with more force, loudly enough that she couldn't ignore. He watched with satisfaction as she had no choice but to turn and face him. She remained silent but looked at him questioningly.
"Don't you think you should get to work?" He reminded her about why he'd called her over; so that she would make the sweets for so called sampling. Khushi pursed her lips and was about to stand when NK interrupted.
"Work? What work Nannav? It's so late at night. Plus, Khushiji should be resting." NK shrunk back slightly when Arnav glared at him. NK gulped and looked at Nani for help. "Right Nani? Di?" Both Nani and Di supported him and Arnav saw Khushi smiling at him smugly.
"Khushi said so herself that she's fine. Right Khushi?" Arnav crossed his arms across his chest, getting desperate for her response. Okay, so maybe he shouldn't have ignored her in the car ride over to his house. But this was the first time he'd brought a woman home willingly. Could he be blamed for using the time in the car to figure out why he'd so impulsively demanded her presence in his home?
Khushi simply looked at him without saying anything. Arnav was ready to drive up the wall. He was used to a chattering Khushi. Not this quiet Khushi. "Khushi, a word." He indicated to the corridor.
Khushi sighed. She smiled at the rest before making her way to the brooding Laad Governor. She stood a few meters away from him and crossed her arms. He enjoyed ignoring her right? Let's see if he liked it when he was ignored.
"What do you think you are doing?" He ground out the words. Who was she to stand in his house and ignore him?
"Why are you ignoring me?" He asked, not letting himself wonder why her ignorance affected him so much.
"You were ignoring me too, just now. I thought I should follow what my boss does." She replied, hands on her hips. She pouted at him and his eyes automatically fell onto her lips.
He tore his gaze away from her lips. "I am Arnav Singh Raizada" He declared, as if that alone gave him the power to ignore whoever he wanted.
"Aap Arnav Singh Raizada honge apne ghar mein" She replied coolly before gasping at his words.
[Aap Arnav Singh Raizada honge apne ghar mein - You may be Arnav Singh Raizada in your own home]
"Mera hi ghar hai, Khushi Kumari Gupta" He smirked at her and she was distracted by how much younger he looked with the slight smile on his face. She opened and closed her mouth, trying to think of a retort. But before she could say anything, he turned around and walked away, going up the stairs to where she presumed were the bedrooms.
[Mera hi ghar hai, Khushi Kumari Gupta - This is my house, Khushi Kumari Gupta]
It may be your house, Mr Arnav Singh Raizada, but this Khushi Kumari Gupta will definitely make you realize that you cannot ignore her before this night ends', she promised to herself, not knowing his present state of going half-crazy thanks to her.
