Chapter 7
He was right. First day of her working here, and he was already going crazy. He imagined the next six months; an image of him bald and old showed up, with a young Khushi chattering away as always. There was every chance that image could come true.
"What the!" He cursed to himself.
He glared at his files, his laptop, his cabin, his everything. He scowled at his coffee mug. He frowned to himself. He hit the button that drew the blinds up and allowed him to see across to her cabin. Only she wasn't there.
He supposed that was a good thing. With the way he was feeling right now, he would've gladly glared her to death.
He tried shoving the sudden and unexplained need to apologize from his mind but without any success. Afterall, he was ASR. He had never apologized to anyone. Ever. Not even to his Di. So then why her?
The temptation to look for her was overwhelming. But for now, he had another task. Firing Pam. He was slightly relieved. He never did like her anyway.
"Pam, come up to my cabin" He barked the order over the phone. A skimpily dressed Pam bounced up the stairs, her face glowing at having ASR ask for her personally.
"May I come in?" She asked batting her eyelashes at him.
"I'm afraid this is the last time you will ever come in." Arnav stretched his body in his chair. Pam looked at him confused, walking in to sit in front of him. "I don't understand, Sir" She locked her fingers together. He seemed.. angry.
"I'm the one who doesn't understand, Pam. Care to explain why you stashed my coffee pack in some random drawer which caused my PA to go run out, get me some, and get late for office?" Arnav looked at her steadily.
Pam swallowed. "Sir.. I- I mean, I was just.. prank. Sir, it was a prank. She was new, so.." Pam tried explaining. ASR stared at her, his eyebrow raised. Was she a small kid that she wanted to play pranks?
"Please pack up and leave. Your services are no longer needed." He dismissed her and ignored her shocked gasp. "Sir, please don't fire me. It was just a harmless prank!" She desperately tried to argue.
Harmless? Khushi's teary eyes came to his mind when he had shouted at her earlier in the morning. That woman! As it is she can't stop talking. And when she should've spoken, she kept quiet. He looked at Pam. "Do I need to call security?" Pam scurried away, hobbling down the stairs as she tried to keep in her tears.
Arnav exhaled. One task was done. And now, for task 2. Finding Khushi Kumari Gupta. Where was she?
"And jalebis. They are my favorite. My absolute favorite. I can make them in my sleep." Khushi beamed at her new friend, Neilji. She had been coming down to the basement to make copies of some documents when she ran into him. She liked him instantly. He was nice, kind and funny.
"Wow. Professional huh?" Neil smiled at Khushi. She was pretty. And sweet. "Maybe you could make some for me" He suggested. She nodded eagerly.
"I will make it for the whole office, Neilji. You won't have to eat lunch or dinner. My jalebis will fill your tummy." Khushi informed him. Neiljed laughed at that but straightened up soon when he heard his boss's voice.
"Your jalebis won't get my work done, Khushi" Arnav stood at the doorway, hid body blocking the exit. His shadow fell across the floor. His fists clenched by his sides. Here he was trying to find her and apologize, and she was busy being friendly with some guy. Some guy who was standing too close to her for his comfort.
He looked at Neil. "Are you done?" He watched as Neil glanced at Khushi to say a quick bye and then he moved to the side to let Neil pass through the door. Arnav resumed his current position and blocked the door.
Khushi looked at him warily. She was catching up on how her boss worked. He was unpredictable. His moods swings were making her dizzy. "Is there something you wanted, Sir?" She asked politely.
He was about to charge at her and demand to know why she was flirting with some man when she was supposed to be working. But then he looked at her face and reigned in his anger.
He was here to apologize, and he would do that and then leave. Maybe then he would get some peace for the day.
"S.." Arnav gulped. "Sor.." He cleared his throat. "Look, there's something I want to say" Arnav declared.
Khushi looked at him with curiosity. "Haan, toh boliye na. Humne kaha mana kiya hai"
[Haan, toh boliye na. Humne kaha mana kiya hai - Then say it. When have I stopped you]
Arnav looked down to the carpet, inspecting it. He glanced at her again. He found her squinting at him, looking at him with suspicion. "S.. so.." Arnav swallowed. Damn, this was hard.
Khushi's brows pulled together. "Aap kab se ss ss bol rahe hai." She commented. She watched as he ran an agitated hand through his hair.
[Aap kab se ss ss bol rahe hai - You have been saying ss ss for so long]
"Sir, I don't understand what you are trying to say-" Khushi was interrupted.
"Will you just let me finish, damn it!" He clenched his jaw.
Khushi pursed her lips. "Okay, sorry. Sorry. I won't say anything"
Arnav looked at her, startled. So easily she'd said sorry. That too twice. Why couldn't he do it? He was ASR. He could do anything.
She noticed his pale and tired face. "I wanted to say.. s..ss.." He decided to get it done with "Sorr-"
She gasped and remembered about his illness. Poor man. She remembered how he'd wondered what she had been doing in his cabin when he himself had called her up. Plus, he'd said he didn't have much time.. The illness was probably causing him to.. Oh! He needed her help!
"Hey Devi Maiyya! Ss ss - susu? Aapko susu karni hai?" She blurted out and watched as the horns appeared on his head and smoke blew out his ears.
[Hey Devi Maiyya! Susu? Aapko susu karni hai - Oh God! Ss ss - susu? You want to go to the bathroom?]
"What the fu-" Arnav glared at her in disbelief. "How the hell- why would I - susu? Why would I tell you that?" He took a step forward, wanting to strangle her. Only she could misread him to this extent!
"Ohho Arnavji, you are sick. I know about your illness. My neighbor's daughter's little boy comes up to me and says ss..ssusu all the time. You don't have to be shy-" Her slip from Sir to Arnavji strangely didn't bother him. She blabbed on, missing the way he'd taken another step forward. Again with the illness. He was not the one with any illness, she was! And where did her neighbor come from?
"Shut up. Shut. Up." He pulled back his hands from shaking her. Khushi looked at him with wide eyes, preparing herself to deal with his mood swings again.
"But Arnavji, you need help. Come, let me show you to the washroom" Khushi was ready to direct him. He closed his eyes - this girl was impossible.
He bit his lips and looked to the floor, taking a deep breath before looking up at her. "Khushi, I know where the washroom is. This office is mine." He said calmly.
"Oh, that's true. Then if you know, why are you here?" Khushi asked curiously. Arnav opened his mouth but wasn't able to say anything. Khushi watched him open and close his mouth like a fish. Hey Devi Maiyya, had he lost his voice, she wondered. She was about to ask him when he held out his hand, stopping her.
He sensed she was about to say something more, and he couldn't take it anymore. She would say something ridiculous again, and he would be charged with murder in the next hour because he would definitely kill her.
So he held out his hand to stop her and instructed her. "Khushi, you will not say another word for the whole day. If you do, I will cut today's salary. Do you understand?"
Khushi gasped. "But-" She stopped, a horrified expression on her face. Was her but' counted? She quickly put a finger on her lips and looked at him. Arnav breathed in, satisfied. At least now with her not talking, he would be able to think again. The tiniest shred of resolve he'd had to apologize went down the drain with her susu talk. So he decided to let it go.
"Have you fixed the Mehta appointment for this Wednesday at 5pm?" Arnav crossed his arms. He glared at her when she opened her mouth to answer him. But luckily for her, her voice was stuck due to his threat. She gulped and then nodded. "Good." Arnav said.
For a moment, silence was all that filled the air in the basement. He looked at her, taking in the light that fell on her face, making her skin shine. Her hair, her eyes, her lips.. Which still had her finger on it. His lips twitched as he fought to hide his amusement.
"When I said not to say a word, I didn't mean you have to spend the day putting your finger on your lips." Arnav tilted his head. She was so cute- no, he didn't want to think like that. She was his employee!
Khushi's eyes zeroed in on her finger that was being kissed by her lips as she showed him how she would stay silent. She looked up at him sheepishly and removed her finger.
But then, she put her forefinger and thumb together and swept her hand across her mouth, showing him that she was zipping and locking her mouth. Then she pretended to throw away the key and beamed at him, showing her teeth. He coughed to cover up the laugh.
He frowned. The last time he laughed was probably years ago.
"Get back to work" He turned to leave but then faced her again. He remembered her chat with the Neil guy and pushed away thoughts about why the image of her making jalebis for Neil bothered him. She wanted to make jalebis right? Well, she would.
"By the way, you're coming to my house tonight." He impulsively decided. She stood there, shocked. Why would Arnavji need her at his house, she wondered.
The image of Baba Arnavji in one of his mood swings came to mind, him wearing a scarf around his head, long beard on his face, wearing dhoti with a stick in his hand, chanting away to silence her forever as she sat near the fire, terrified. She swallowed. There was every chance that could some true, now that she'd figured out he was bipolar.
"You will be making sweets for my family. So that they can try the samples." He declared, knowing in his mind that his excuse was a sad one. His demand of her making sweets had nothing to do with sampling.
After all, he'd already confirmed and given her the order for the sweets needed for the prayers. He'd done this impulsively, trying to shove an image of Khushi happily making jalebis for that Neil.
But she didn't need to know that, did she?
