More than a decade after Haunted 3D introduced audiences to a tale of love, loss and vengeance, director Vikram Bhatt returns to familiar territory with Haunted 3D: Echoes Of The Past. Blending romance, mystery and horror, the film acts as a spiritual successor to the 2011 film while attempting to tell a fresh story about grief, redemption and unresolved emotions.

The narrative follows Dev (Mahaakshay Chakraborty), a troubled man carrying deep emotional wounds who retreats to an isolated mansion overlooking the mysterious Maniktala Lake. Hoping to find solitude and a fresh start, Dev instead finds himself surrounded by unsettling paranormal occurrences. As strange visions begin to intensify, he slowly uncovers the mansion's tragic history, one that appears connected to both his past and the memory of his lost love, Sunheri (Chetna Pande).

A Familiar Story Wrapped In Mystery

What follows is a tale built around unfinished relationships, hidden secrets and restless spirits. The premise is intriguing enough and initially manages to draw viewers into its world. However, as the story progresses, it often leans on familiar horror conventions that many genre fans will recognise.

The film does try to distinguish itself through its emotional angle. Rather than focusing entirely on scares, it spends considerable time exploring themes of loss, longing and unresolved guilt. At times, this approach gives the narrative added depth, though it occasionally slows down the momentum.

Atmosphere Does The Heavy Lifting

One of the film's biggest strengths is its atmosphere. Vikram Bhatt successfully creates a sense of unease through the mansion's dimly lit corridors, foggy surroundings and carefully staged supernatural moments. The film relies more on mood than constant jump scares, which works in its favour.

There are a few effective horror sequences that genuinely create tension, particularly when the film embraces uncertainty rather than explaining everything outright. However, not every scare lands with the same impact and some moments feel predictable.

Performances Keep Things Grounded

Mahaakshay Chakraborty delivers a sincere performance as Dev. He convincingly portrays a man grappling with grief, guilt and fear, helping the audience stay invested even when the screenplay becomes uneven.

Chetna Pande brings a quiet emotional presence to Sunheri and shares decent chemistry with Mahaakshay. While her role is somewhat limited by the script, she manages to leave an impression.

The supporting cast, including Gaurav Bajpai, Hemant Pandey, Shruti Prakash, Praneet Bhatt and Mannveer Choudharry, perform their roles adequately and contribute to the film's mysterious tone. Some characters, however, could have benefited from stronger development.

Strong Craft, Sometimes Uneven Execution

Technically, the film remains fairly solid. The cinematography makes effective use of shadows, reflections and confined spaces to generate suspense. The production design also helps transform the mansion into an important part of the storytelling rather than merely a backdrop.

The background score complements the horror elements without becoming overwhelming. The visual effects are mostly functional and are used with relative restraint, though a few sequences reveal their limitations.

Ultimately, Haunted 3D: Echoes Of The Past is a watchable supernatural drama that works best when it focuses on atmosphere and emotion rather than conventional horror beats. While it suffers from familiar storytelling patterns, occasional pacing issues and a lack of major surprises, it remains engaging enough for fans of Vikram Bhatt's style of horror.

The film may or may not reach the impact of some of Bhatt's earlier supernatural outings, but it offers enough mystery, romance and eerie moments to justify a viewing for audiences who enjoy gothic horror with an emotional undercurrent.
