At a time when audiences are constantly scrolling through short-form videos and consuming content in seconds, television continues to hold its own by offering stories that viewers can grow with over time. Actress Niharika Chouksey, who is currently winning hearts with Tumm Se Tumm Tak, believes that while content consumption habits have changed, the audience's desire for emotionally engaging stories remains the same.
Talking about the growing dominance of reels and bite-sized content, Niharika says that television and digital content serve different purposes and can comfortably coexist. "Reels are great for instant entertainment, but television gives viewers the chance to live a journey with the characters truly. That's the beauty of long-form storytelling. People still enjoy investing in stories and relationships that unfold over time," she says.
I think people connect with emotions that feel real.

Television Continues To Create Emotional Bonds With Viewers
According to the actress, today's audience is far more selective about what they watch than before. Viewers may have countless options available, but they tend to stay with stories that feel honest and relatable. "I think people connect with emotions that feel real. If a character's journey reminds them of someone they know or something they have experienced, they become emotionally invested. That's something we are fortunate to have in Tumm Se Tumm Tak," she shares.
The rise of social media has also transformed the relationship between actors and viewers. Feedback that once took weeks now arrives within minutes of an episode airing. "As actors, we get to know instantly what audiences are feeling. Sometimes they react to a scene, sometimes to a particular dialogue, and sometimes they even predict what's going to happen next. It's amazing to witness that kind of engagement," Niharika says.
While conversations about shrinking attention spans continue, the actress feels that long-form storytelling still offers something short-form content cannot. "When viewers spend months following a character's journey, they build an emotional connection that is difficult to create in a few minutes. That's the biggest strength of television."
Niharika Chouksey Talks About The Changing Face Of Television Storytelling
Niharika also acknowledges that television storytelling has evolved over the years. Writers and actors today are more conscious of audience preferences, leading to faster-paced narratives and more realistic character arcs. "Viewers today want stories to move forward. They appreciate authenticity and natural performances, and I think that's reflected in the way shows are being written now."
She believes that modern television is increasingly borrowing from digital storytelling styles while retaining the emotional depth that has always defined the medium. "Television is changing with the times. It still has its traditional roots, but there is definitely a more contemporary approach to storytelling now."
Describing the current phase of Indian television as one of transition and reinvention, Niharika feels that Tumm Se Tumm Tak perfectly represents this evolving space. "We are at a stage where traditional storytelling and modern sensibilities are coming together. I think Tumm Se Tumm Tak reflects that balance beautifully."
