"Tell me you aren't serious. Please. Tell me you are joking." Garima pleaded Chaya. "She is joking, isn't she?" Garima asked her husband, Shashi.
Shashi turned to ask his cousin with who he had shared his childhood. "Chaya..."
"I can't take my girl where I am going Shashi. Garima, I am begging you. You are my last hope. I can't take my little Khushi with me." Chaya held the bundle in her arms closer to her chest.
Garima looked at her husband helplessly. Before Shashi could respond, a tiny wailing sound knifed through the air. "I will go check on Payal," Shashi escaped the impending doom that was the conversation.
"I don't have much time Garima," Chaya said softly. "If you can't take her, I will arrange something else."
Garima had refrained from judging Chaya's choices till then. "What about Khushi's father?"
"He is out of question." Chaya shut that down. "He is unavailable for this responsibility."
Garima scowled. "Married or dead?" She couldn't stop venom escape her mouth.
Chaya smiled, all teeth. "Both."
Garima fell quiet. "Give her here." She said moments later, holding her hands out. "I don't want something that is a part of you to end up in a world that doesn't know you." Chaya hugged the bundle to even closer to her chest making the baby squiggle in her arms. "I will take care of Khushi like my own." Garima said softly.
"Will you tell her about me?" Chaya asked softly. "Tell her I love her very dearly."
"Of course Chaya," Garima replied, her arms still out, waiting.
"And tell her I am dead." Chaya said and handed the baby over to Garima's outstretched arms. Garima couldn't rebut Chaya for her outrageous expectation as the bundle that was now in her arms had noticed the shift and had started to fuss.
"Do you really want your daughter to grow up without knowing who her mother is?" Garima asked rocking the baby in her arms. Chaya was watching Garima hold her daughter.
"Khushi will know you. And for me, that's enough." Chaya stood up.
"Is there any way I can find you? A number, an address, anything?" Garima asked. This was all happening too fast and Chaya had already put one foot out of the house.
Chaya shook her head sadly. "Please don't try to find me Garima. The moment I step out of this house, I am dead to you and everyone else. I have made mistakes. I don't want to make them anymore. This is the only way I can think of."
"By disappearing from our lives completely? To run away from the life that you have created?" Garima all but yelled.
"I am going to make a new life Garima. Please. No words can make me feel any more horrible than I already feel." Chaya said as she walked out. Before she stepped out of the house and figuratively die from their lives she stopped. "Love Khushi like your own Garima. That's all I want." Chaya's eyes were haunted.
Garima didn't know if Chaya was running to or running away from someone. She believed Chaya's claim regarding the death of Khushi's father. Chaya had never revealed the man she was in relationship with and had been completely distraught and pregnant when he left her for good. Garima had stood by Chaya and treated her with dignity and respect. And now everything had changed.
"Tell Shashi good-bye." Chaya swooped in and kissed Khushi on her forehead. She hugged Garima and left without a backward glance.
"Welcome home baby girl." Garima cooed at the sleeping baby.
Khushi slept through the time when her mother left her for a different future. Khushi slept through when her new mother broke the news to her new father. Khushi slept through when her new parents held their own daughter in front of Khushi and the little baby, Payal, patted little Khushi and welcomed her in her baby language.
Her world had changed and she hadn't even known.
