New Delhi (PTI): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday showered praise on the Congress' heir-apparent Rahul Gandhi, saying he was confident that the 37-year-old leader would take the party and the nation to "new heights of glory". "I am confident that the young leaders of the Congress party like Rahul Gandhi can win the minds and affections of our youth and take the party and the nation to new frontiers and new heights of glory," Singh said at the AIIC session here evoking chants of "Rahul Gandhi Zindabad". Singh advised the youngsters in the party to reach out to all regions and all those who suffer from poverty and hunger, helping Congress to fulfil the vision of Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. "...Give them (who suffer from poverty and hunger) a voice," he said in his 50-minute speech. The Prime Minister credited the Amethi MP, who was appointed party General Secretary two months ago, for "taking the initiative" for extending the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act to all parts of the country, thus "enabling crores of rural families to secure employment and livelihood".Gandhi, who had played an important role in the Uttar Pradesh assembly campaign is slated to play an important role in the party, including the upcoming Gujarat election.

NEW DELHI: Generals might rule the roost across the border but here they are steadily getting downgraded. Robert Vadra may figure on the list of VIPs exempt from security checks at airports but the army, navy and IAF chiefs are simply not considered important enough to be granted this privilege.
Defence minister A K Antony admitted in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday that his ministry had taken up the case for the three services chiefs to be exempted from security procedures at civil airports, in line with the treatment given to ministers and senior bureaucrats, with the civil aviation ministry.
"(But) ministry of civil aviation and Bureau of Civil Aviation Security have stated that according exemption to service chiefs will lead to similar demands from some other authorities," added Antony.
The minister's answer, of course, left the armed forces disappointed. "It's ridiculous. This means the people entrusted with the security of the nation, the service chiefs, cannot be trusted," said a senior officer.
This is yet another instance of indignity being heaped on the armed forces right since Independence in the name of "civilian control".
A man is exempted from security check merely bec'se he is SIL of some supreme leader. And the armed forces chiefs are denied the same on some silly pretext. Yeh desh kya Nehru family ki jaagir hai? 😡
