Part 10

"SOS... My place at 5pm. MANIK SHOULD NOT KNOW ABOUT IT" was the message that Nandini sent out to the Fab4 when they reached Mumbai from Mangalore. She needed to be as discreet as possible; she couldn't take the chance of Manik finding out about her plan. She wasn't worried about his anger but she was more concerned about his pain if ever her plan flops. "So Madam, kya hai aapaka hukum" Cabir mocked at Nandini when they gathered at her place as planned. Nandini took a deep breath as the four pairs of anxious eyes were waiting for her to speak. "Guys... I need to meet Manik's dad" she finally broke the news. Cabir nearly choked on his drink while the rest of them gave her a puzzled look as if she spoke in French."Wait a second; let me get it right... Ms Nandini Moorthy, you want to meet Manik's dad and that too without Manik's knowledge?" Cabir asked and Nandini nodded. "Paar kyu Nandini" Dhruv asked."Nandini, Manik's family matters is something that we never interfere with. That is something that Manik never wanted us to interfere as well" Mukti told her and Cabir agreed with Mukti."Guys, there must a reason for Nandini... Let's just listen to her before we ambush her" Alya suggested. "Thanks Alya" Nandini finally sighed in relief, Alya was her first ray of hope. "I know that Manik doesn't like to discuss about his family especially about his dad but that doesn't mean he hates him. Even now, Manik still loves and misses his dad dearly but all his past disappointments have driven him away from him. Thanks to Nyonika, she has ensured that it stays that way for her benefits. I was thinking that maybe I can use this wedding as opportunity to at least bridge them a bit closer even if I can't mend the broken bond." she confessed. "The only reason why I want this to be kept as a secret from Manik is because I want to spare him from the disappointment in case I fail" Nandini explained. "He is too fragile emotionally" she murmured softly. "At least, I know Nyonika and to certain extend I know how to handle her but I'm totally clueless when it comes to his dad. I need help guys... I don't know anyone else who can help me in this besides you people" Nandini plea touched their hearts.

"Deekho Nandini, as much as we want to help you but none of us really know his dad that well to help you out. Uncle used to send us gifts during festive seasons and he has spoken to us on few occasions over the phone. That is how much of communication we have with Uncle." Cabir explained to Nandini while the rest were cracking their head trying to figure out how to help out. "Dhruv... Dhruv may be able to help...Hain nah Dhruv" Alya suddenly recalled."Yeah, I'm hoping for the same too Alya. Issiliye I'm trying to find whether I still have uncle's number in my mobile" Dhruv replied. "Oh yeah, buddy... You have met uncle couple of times because you accompanied Manik to Pune" Cabir added. Dhruv felt the pressure on him intensify as he was their hope. "Found it...Just send it over to you too" Dhruv hailed and everyone sighed in relief. "Oh Dhruv... You can't imagine how much this means to me" Nandini thanked him. "Nandini, can you handle this alone or do you want me to accompany you when you meet him. Maybe a short introduction to uncle?" he suggested. "Will you?" she asked hopefully. "Of course Nandini... Anything for Manik and of course for you too... Remember? Friends forever?" Dhruv reminded her. "Thank you Dhruv... My sweetest friend whenever I'm in need" she told him as she hugged him. "It's great that we have uncle's personal number but we still need a plan yaar... You guys just can't show-up at his doorstep nor could you just call him. You can call uncle but there are still chances that he declines to meet and confronts Manik. Things will get really messy then" Mukthi pointed out and everyone including Nandini agreed."That was also one of my fears" Nandini confessed.

"Chill people, let's not get distracted before we even get started" Cabir stepped in. "Mukti has a valid point but let's see how we can work that out. Nandini needs to meet uncle without him realizing that he is meeting his future DIL because we don't know how is his reaction going to be" he added and they all agreed. "Got it!" Cabir finally had his eureka moment and everyone turned towards him with hope. "The perks of being in entertainment industry, it gives you the links to reach the unreachable. I need to make a few calls" he announced and walked out with his phone. The half hour that Cabir took seemed like one the longest 30 minutes in Nandini's life. "Here is the plan, I spoke to the station to have coverage of all the renowned businessmen and Mr Malhotra is undisputedly is one of them. So the channel is going to reach his secretary for his schedule and availability. The chances of him to decline are slim but still let's keep our fingers cross. If we get a slot, then I will go along with Nandini to meet Mr Malhotra. Nandini, then it's your battle from that point. If that fails, then we will rely on Dhruv to make it happen." he announced. Nandini sighed in relief and thanked her Aiyappa for helping her cross the first hurdle.

After a couple days, Cabir told Nandini that they manage to secure a slot with Mr Malhotra at his residence instead of his office as they wanted a much more relaxed ambiance for the up-close and personal interview. The interview was scheduled after a month, giving Nandini sufficient time to prepare her before meeting Mr.Malhotra. Nandini realized how little she knew about Manik and his family when she started goggeling about the Malhotra's. She knew Manik's dad was affluent and influenced but she didn't know big was the Malhotra business empire. She finally understood why Nyonika never gets satisfied with what she has. There were tones of pictures of Mr. Malhotra in the net but she couldn't find a single shot where he smiled. Now she knew where Manik inherited the coconut face look from as she scanned his pictures. She started getting sleepless nights and distress was evident on her face as the date was nearing which got Manik worried. "Nandini, is everything alright? Is something bothering you?" he asked as his fingers trailed on the fine lines on her face. "I have not been getting enough sleep these days, I will be fine in couple of days" she told him. "So tell me what is that is causing you to have sleepless nights besides me?" he smirked. "Why bother asking when you already know the answer... Mr Malhotra is the reason behind my sleepless night" she confessed. "Ms Moorthy, I'm guilty as accused, I know you can't resist me even in your dreams but why the distress. Tell me what I did I do to you in your dreams" he teased her making her blush. "Manik... tum nah..." she playfully punched him."I'm trying to rush for my thesis because you have given me a very tight deadline, so all this distress is because of you Mr Malhotra" she lied. "Nandini, you know that you don't have to be so hard on yourself. I can change the dates..." Nandini hushed Manik before he could complete his sentence. "Manik, I was just kidding... You don't have to worry about anything and don't you dare to even think about changing our wedding dates!" she warned him. "You don't know how much I'm looking forward for it" she confessed. Manik pulled her closer into his arms as he whispered "Me too".

Nandini tried to rehearse all possible way to speak to Manik's dad but nothing seems to be convincing. She couldn't bring herself to talk to Manik about his dad, to know more about him because his smile vanishes every time she speaks about his family. Nandini was lost in her thoughts that she didn't realize that Dhruv was watching her for a long time. "Tum abhi pareshaan huh?" he asked as he sat next to her. "Dhruv tum aur yahan" Nandini was surprised with Dhruv's presence. "Yeah, I just thought that you may be stressed about the plan and may use a friend's help. So socha tumse mille aur discuss karo. Looks like I'm right. Nandini agar tum aisse rahongi, then Manik will definitely suspect yaar." Dhruv reminded her. "Dhruv, you know that nothing goes amiss with Manik when it comes to me. I have managed to convince him otherwise paar we both know that is not the truth. I tried very hard yaar but you know I just get jitters when I think about meeting his dad. Mera ek chance and I just don't want to do or say anything that could ruin it." Nandini shared her worries."Now I know what Manik went thru when he had to deal with Amms" she added. "Nandini, I know that you are nervous but you need to keep calm. Uncle itni buri nahi, he loves Manik a lot so he will definitely like you too" Dhruv calmed Nandini down. "Just be yourself Nandini, just like the way we understood your love for Manik; uncle will also understand you" he made her understand. "Thanks Dhruv... Thanks for being there whenever I was in a need of a friend" she thanked him. "I totally forgot about the reason I came to see you. We manage to block Manik's calendar for our plan, he will not be able to follow you to Pune. With lots of effort, we have had all his very important meetings scheduled on that day, so you can relax about Manik insisting in following you to Pune for your 'Project Execution'. I will be with Manik throughout the day to ensure he doesn't leave halfway " Dhruv smirked.

"Pune??? Ab ajanak Pune plan kahan say athi?" he asked her while pacing back and forth in her terrace. "Manik, mere thesis ki liye I have to go for the conference. Why are you making a deal about it" she pretended to be annoyed. "I'm not complaining Nandini but why last minute. You knew about the conference and you never told me earlier. I could have arranged something with my plans, we could have gone to Pune together nah" Manik sulked. "I don't know why but my secretary has lined up all my important meetings on the same day. If it's one or 2, I could manage but woh pagal ladki has arranged 6 meetings back to back" he complaint. "Manik, it's only Pune. I will back on the same day, so you don't have worry Manik" she tried to calm him. "Theek hai, I will get the driver to drop you and fetch you back." he told her."Ok baba... As you say, I will go with your driver and come back with him. Aur kuch rules or condition to be adhered Mr Malhotra?" she pulled his leg. "Yeah yeah... haslo... I know you love having fun on my expenses. The whole Pune trip would have been so fun for all of us if only you told us earlier." Manik complained. "Oh... So you are sad not because I'm going Pune without you but because you can't have fun in Pune with your friends while I'm stuck in a boring conference" Nandini quizzed him. "Of course, what else could it be? You think I was complaining because I missed an opportunity to go on a long drive to Pune with you, make pit stops along the way for some romance" he told her. "And I will never make it to my conference" she completed his sentence. "Acha, so all this was pre-planned?" he asked her as he pulled her closer. "Manik, the Pune conference came suddenly because my supervisor couldn't attend." she lied. "But I promise, once all this is over then we will go on a long road trip with lots of pit stop for our romance. Now tell me, are you going to send me off to Pune with this coconut face?" she asked him. "Fine, when are you supposed to be at Pune?" he asked. "I need to be there at 10 AM." she told him. "I will see you at 5, we will have breakfast together then you can leave by 6. That will give you ample of time to reach; I will stay back and drop Virat at school before heading to office.

Nandini's mind was so cluttered that night, the anxiety was building up so much that she felt that her brain just refused to function. She resorted to Manik's technique when she couldn't risk of herself running into his arms to calm her down, the magic of his touch can make her forget the world let alone her worries. She decided to shut herself from all her thoughts and surrender herself to her Aiyappa, to the night and to the stars that was twinkling hopes for her. She didn't know when she fell asleep. Her day started with a lovely surprise as she saw a bouquet of red roses on her bed when she walked out from her shower. "Manik... "She whispered as she took the flowers in her arms. Nandini smiled as she read the pink note that came with it "I know red roses aren't exactly the best flowers to wish you good luck yet I couldn't resist them just like you... Manik". Her phone beeped and Nandini knew who it was even without looking at the message. "Enough of admiring the roses, spare some time for the person who delivered it. Don't keep me waiting..." he messaged her. "Give me a couple of minutes, will be down shortly" she replied him.

A small gift box on the dressing table caught her attention as she was getting ready. She saw a small exquisite diamond tie brooch which also came with another pink note to it. "Wear it close to your heart; it will remind you that I'm always there with you". A tear escaped from her eyes because he knew what she was yearning for; his comfort and support. Till that moment, she felt that she was in the battle alone but now she knows that she is not alone; it gave her a new surge of confidence. Manik couldn't help but to admire as she walked down dressed in her black midi dress with high neck and red jacket but a pang of disappointment hit him as he saw the brooch was missing on her. He didn't know whether she didn't like the gift or maybe she didn't notice gift in the midst of getting ready. He didn't want his disappointment to hamper her morning, so he kept his smile plastered on his face as he kissed her good morning. "So all set for your big presentation today?" he asked her. "I hope so Manik... I'm just so nervous, just hope I don't screw up things" she confessed. "Anyways tell me how I look?" she asked as she twirled for him. "Beautiful as always" he told her. "Then why do I still feel incomplete" she asked and Manik immediately knew that his gift didn't go unnoticed. He pulled her closer and wrapped his arms around her waist. "If you knew something was amiss, then why didn't you wear it" he asked as he gazed straight into her eyes."Because I wanted you to help me wear it..." she whispered as she passed him the box. Manik teased her height by trying to find the right angle before he pinned the brooch on her jacket. "Now it's perfect" he announced as he cupped her face in his hands. "Nandini, I know this so-called presentation of yours is taking a toll on you. It is very unlikely of you, because I have never seen my confident Nandini getting so worked up yet I just want you to relax, give your best shot and stop worrying about the outcome. Leave the rest to your Aiyappa. When you come back from Pune, I want to see my old Nandini back" he reminded her as he kissed her good luck. "I promise that I will give my best for you Manik" she promised. "Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you. Cabir is driving you to Pune instead of my driver because he has some interview that he needs to personally cover in Pune. So you guys enjoy Pune while I'm stuck in boring meetings here" he made a sad puppy face. "Aww Manik, I will make it up with you" Nandini promised him. She bends over to kiss Manik when Cabir ringed the doorbell. "Perfect timing... Everyone just knows how to ruin our moment" Manik cursed while Nandini couldn't help giggling as she opened the door.

"Good morning Nandini" Cabir greeted her as he entered and "Not so good morning to you Manik" he wished Manik when he saw the irritated look on his face. "Cabir..." Manik growled. "Sorry that I interrupted your early morning romance?" he teased and Manik's glare was what he got in return. "Acha, I tell you what Nandini. I will be in the car, you come when you are done with whatever you were doing before I came" Cabir pretended to leave when Manik held him back. "Nice try Cabir and stop pretending to be sorry because I know you too well" Manik reminded him. "Both of you better get going before you get stuck in the morning traffic." Manik reminded them as Nandini collected all her stuff. "Manik, chachi will be down shortly but you can call her if you need anything. Meanwhile tum todi dheer mera room meh rest karo nah. It's too early for Virat's school and your office. Mere waja tum itni subah utgayi" she told him. "Chill Nandini, I will be just fine. Yeh mera bhi ghaar hai. You just stop worrying about me and concentrate on what you need to deliver." he assured her and she nodded. "Cabir, please give me 2 minutes. I will see you at the car" she requested. "As you say Madam..." Cabir told her as he walked out. The moment Cabir was out of the earshot, Nandini commanded Manik to unbutton his shirt. "You want me to WHAT my shirt?" Manik was taken aback with her request. "Manik, just do as I say. Jaldi nah" she instructed him while looking out to make sure nobody is around. "Ok... Ok... " Manik smirked as slowly unbutton his shirt. "Manik... Not all the buttons, just the first few" she stopped him midway. "Please give me clear instructions Ms Moorthy" he reminded her. Nandini bent over to kiss him, marking her spot on his heart with his favorite red lipstick. "Now this will keep me close to your heart, just as your gift." she whispered in his ears. "I need more than that" Manik demanded. "What if someone sees it?" Nandini was worried. "That is my problem, now since you got me into the mood you better give me enough kisses to last for the day" making Nandini blush with his request. She quickly bends over and gave him a few smooches before she left to Pune.

There goes the next part of the much delayed update... I had it penned but never got the time to proof read till today. Sorry once again but I just you will enjoy it. Will reply all the rest of the comments later as I m back to IF after many many months...
