For years, the debate around nepotism in Bollywood has divided audiences, with star kids often finding themselves at the centre of criticism. While many believe actors born into film families enjoy an easier path to success, filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has a very different perspective. In a recent interview, the director spoke about the pressures faced by industry insiders and why he believes actors like Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt have had to work even harder to prove themselves.
‘They Have to Compete With Their Own Legacy’
Sharing his thoughts on the insider-versus-outsider conversation, Imtiaz said that people who grow up in film families carry a unique burden. According to him, being surrounded by successful parents, relatives and industry veterans creates constant pressure to live up to those standards.
He explained that actors such as Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt are not only judged by audiences but are also measured against the achievements of their own families. In his view, outsiders often have greater freedom because they are not constantly compared to generations of successful film personalities.
The filmmaker pointed out that for many star kids, success is not simply about landing a role. It is about creating an identity that stands apart from the legacy they inherit. That challenge, he believes, can be tougher than people realise.
Why Ranbir and Alia Stand Above the Labels
Imtiaz also addressed the frequent use of the term “nepo kid” when discussing Ranbir and Alia. While acknowledging that both actors come from established film families, he stressed that talent ultimately determines longevity in the industry.
Speaking about Ranbir, the director said there is little room for doubt about his abilities because of the strength of his performances. He shared a similar opinion about Alia, noting that her work has earned audience appreciation beyond conversations about privilege or background.
For Imtiaz, opportunities may open doors, but sustained success depends entirely on what actors bring to the screen. He believes both stars have reached a point where their work speaks louder than the debate surrounding their origins.
