I always thought it was strange that if men and women are reversed in the same situation, even educated people would have different expectation of them.
It's not just men who put down women, it's women who put down other women more.
Let's take Gangaa and Sagaar situation and reverse it.
Saagar is the orphan boy who got shelter at Gangaa's home. Gangaa's parents brought him home as a toy for Gangaa since she liked him.
As a child, Gangaa asked him to marry her and he did. Eventually, she was sent away while he faithfully waits for her, his wife.
Years later, Gangaa returns with a boy he claims to be her boyfriend, say J. Sagar is heart broken but endures everything. J being jealous of their relationship and closeness tries to demean Sagar in front of the whole family which he thought loves him like a son and the whole city to the point that people are calling him names and besmirching his honour.
He still tolerates. Suddenly Gangaa comes to him and says that she loves him and now she doesn't want to marry J any more. Not only that she accepts him as her husband in front of the whole family.
The family show their true colours. They call Saagar charity case and how he mistook their charity for love. Saagar's heart is broken, his trust is shaken. But he still has his love, so he is still holding on.
Now Gangaa's dad gets sick and calls him. He begs him to give him his daughter back. Saagar is upset, so he screams at him to take her back thinking that Gangaa is an adult woman - not a thing that anyone can give or take back.
Gangaa hears this and thinks how dare someone she defied her family for can leave her (the fact that she made a boyfriend while staying abroad doesn't count. She can leave him, but he can't leave her because you know, he is a charity case and she is the cherished daughter).
She storms to J and does court marriage to him despite Saagar warning her that she can never come back to him if she does so. She makes mockery of her marriage to Saagar and shows him that everyone of his relationships are lies.
Now she comes back as a wife to J. But same night she thinks that she made a mistake. So she goes back to Saagar and tries to entice him back into her life while being legally married to J but gets upset when he doesn't come after her with his tail tucked under his legs.
If that was showed in a show, Gangaa would be the vamp, not the female lead.
So how is that Saagar is the male lead? Is it because he is a man and not a woman? So him being a total characterless jerk who likes to have his cake and eat it too should still be all right?
If Saagar didn't have Jahnvi in his mind as a back up plan, what he would have done? Would he have drag someone from the street and marry her?
The only way you can come up with a marriage partner that fast when you already have a plan B in mind. That means he was playing with Gangaa thinking he can always fall back on safe bet Jahnvi approved by family with access to family wealth.
If plan A doesn't work out, there is always plan B. But he doesn't want to let go of Ganga either so while legally being married to Jahnvi, he is hanging around Ganga hoping she, like other men and women forgive him using age old excuse "boys will be boys"...
If Ganga refuses, she doesn't love him. If Janvi protests, threaten her with divorce. But if it's such a major mistake, why not get divorced now? Why just make empty threats? Ganga refused him, so he tucked his tail and walked back to plan B?
If this had happened after he had legally married Ganga, what would he have done? Go and have affair with Jahnvi?
Jahnvi might be a b**ch of the first order, but Sagar is no one's idea of a hero. In fact these two are made for each other.
In my opinion, he is a self-centred, immature, privileged jerk who a. doesn't know how to love because true love means that you have to jump completely, no plan B and b. whines like a kid who doesn't want to let go of any of his toys!!!
Ganga is better off without him. Imagine having to live with a man who gets angry and takes extreme steps instead of coming to you and talk to you like any other ADULT rational man.
