What prompted Dasartha to divide the payasanna / kheer into 4 parts?
3 should have been logical isn't, it ?
Why this strange proportion of distribution ...similar to a fractions problem in a Grade III mathematics textbook ?
Your thoughts, please...lets have some discussion.
With all due respect to Kamban / Tulsidas / et all, lets stick to Valmiki for this discussion.

when i was small my grandpa used to tell that the kheer was divided into two parts...then sumitra was left out so both kaikeyi n kaushalya gave small portions to her frm their own part...

Interesting .
But in Valmiki, it is clearly mentioned it is Dasaratha who does the apportioning.

Actually there seems to be a very interesting answer.

As far as I have heard, Sumitra was the youngest of the three queens so both of the other two each gave her a part of the total, so she bore twins

Kau eats half of the payasam then Sumi eats a quarter , Kai eats little bit and then its passed on to Sumi who finishes it off.
Now, what are the contents of payasam? Is it a medicine?
If yes then Kau eating the biggest proportion is quite logical, owing to her age .. higher the age it gets difficult to conceive and Kai eating the least is also understandable since she has age on her side so she eats very little and passes it on to Sumi who again eats the payasam twice. Again i dont believe that since Mrs S ate payasam twice so she got 2 children , it might just be a coincidence
Coming to matematics, lets blame it on lack of availability of measuring jars in Ayodhya :-P :-D

This is the kind of myth perpetuated by half baked movies and ill researched TV serials. As far as Valmiki Ramayana goes it was Dasaratha who does the apportioning.
