In Valmiki, there is an explanation for why Dashrath divides the paayasa as he does.

First, he goes to Kaushalya as she was his chief consort and gives her half of the paayasa. Then he goes to Sumitra and gives her half of the half. When he reaches Kaikeyi, he changes his mind and instead of giving her what's left, he again divides the remaining and returns to Sumitra, giving her what little is left.

The reason he gives the paayasa to Sumitra twice is that he wanted her to give birth to twins, one who would serve Kaushalya's son and one who would serve Kaikeyi's son. He felt this would balance the relationship between the brothers. If there were only three brothers, he feared what would happen if two of them befriended each other and the third became envious. So he wanted Sumitra to give birth to two sons with her qualities, so that in the future, there would be no problems between Kaushalya and Kaikeyi, and their respective progeny.

Dashrath was actually very farsighted when he divided the paayasa. He had Raj neeti in mind and didn't want any politics brewing in his household.

Very well analysed Janaki.

Varali hehe ya.
Ok on a more serious note
She was detached. She will have to let go of both her children. May be she was the only one who could do so. And hence selected by the Lord himself to be with him, one physically and one spiritually.

RAMAM DASARATHAM VIDDHI, MAAM VIDDHI JANAKATHMAJAYAAM AYODHYAAM ATAPAAM VIDDHI, GACCHA TATA YATHA SUKHAM.'

This is one of the famous slokas in Ramayanam, very often quoted. The literal meaning of this sloka is, Know of Rama as Dasaratha. Know of Sita as me. Know of Ayodya as the forest. Go child and be happy.'

In this passage, Sumithra reveals her extraordinary qualities of showing remarkable magnanimity, forbearance, detachment, and to render the wise counsel to the right man at the right time. She also strongly establishes that she had BRAHMAGNANAM, that is awareness that Rama was Lord Narayana.

While the literal meaning is very apparent and laudable straightaway, namely treating Rama(elder brother) as father, treating Sita(elder brother's wife) as mother and the forest as Ayodya, it is the inner meaning, hidden in the beautifully chosen words, which is astonishing!

Rama is to be treated as Dasaratha. Lord Narayana is known to possess this name Dasaratha also! Sumithra says,'MAAM VIDDI JANAKAATHMAJAAYAM'. Janakaathmaja is Janaka's daughter and so is Sita. It is the word MAAM which is a stroke of genius. MAAM also means GODDESS LAKSHMI. VAIKUNTA is also known by the name AYODYA. Vaikunta is the permanent abode of Lord Narayana, where Goddess Lakshmi always resides in His chest. Sumithra thus conveys that Bhagavan and Her consort are moving to their own place of eternal bliss. Commentators, therefore, attribute to Sumithra her innate quality of seeing Paramathma in Rama and Goddess Lakshmi in Sita, citing this sloka in support of their interpretation.

But my moot question is - why 4 times ? can we find something in VR as an explanation for this?

Since rama and his brothers are Vishnu who in turn is " Infinite"
How can infinity be divided ? Even if it gets divided it will remain infinite only and doesn't matter whether you make four divisions or more..
Vellukudi Krishnan ji ki jai ho !! I can't understand Tamil fully but could catch few words of his , his lecture on bhagvata had this payasam question . He says many things , beyond my understanding . You should tell us 😊

I have read Colonel Todd, the british historian's writings in which he says Rama and his brothers had considerable age difference between them. rama and bharata were more or less of same age and both had claim our kingdom equally while Laks & Shatru were much younger ; doesn't Tulsidas also call Laks as ' ladka' a mere boy when he left to forest with R & S ?

This is the kind of myth perpetuated by half baked movies and ill researched TV serials. As far as Valmiki Ramayana goes it was Dasaratha who does the apportioning.

Medha.. I have problems handling fractions...you are giving me calculations with infinity? This was Dasaratha.. not Ramanujam.
Just joking...
On a serious note, Valmiki is quite clear about the births of RBLS. Rama is born on navami, Bharata the next day on dashami (forenoon) and L and S in the afternoon of dashami
refer sloka 1-18-15 (VR)

Nice thread and nice explanations. Even I was believing Kausalya gave her part to Sumitra and Kaikeyi gave her part to Sumitra, thus the twins were born. Thank you all

First Kausalya ate Half plate of kheer because she was the eldest and prominent queen(Here, Kousalya was prominent queen, Kaikeyi was favorite queen.) Then Kheer divided into two halves for Kaikeyi and Sumitra.Kaikeyi left little account of Kheer. Sumitra finished that. Thus, Ram,Bharath ,Lakshman and Shatrughnan were born.
