An interesting point I would like to highlight- something that came to notice only recently -
After the successful completion of the Ashwmedha Yagna, Dasaratha prostates before Rishyasringa .
Now RIshyashringa was a great rishi - so much so that Valmiki devotes three sargas to describe him.
When Dasratha bows before him, the words that come out of the rishi's mouth are revealing " Bhavishyanti suta rajan te chavaraha kula uddhavaha" Oh king- four sons will be born to you to continue your dynasty.
This blessing just came out of his mouth . The putrakameshti was not even in the plans as yet . Even before the commencement of putrakamesti, thee rishi blesses him thus. All that Dasaratha wanted was one son. And yet, Rishyashringa said four sons would be born to him.
Now those who read veda bhashyams etc will be familiar with a line commentators frequently use "Artha Vacham anudhavati"
That means.. the words that come out of a rishi's mouth are veda...They cannot be falsified. Somehow, even the gods have to make those words come true. Such is the power of tapas.
Hence at the time of apportioning the kheer, Dasaratha even without his knowledge was prompted to make four divisions.
