FLUTTERING BUTTERFLIES
Moments later, Nandini tore into her office as if her pants were on fire. Work was going on in full swing already. Nandini was a reporter for the DAILYFLASH channel. Yup, now that's where destiny got her. Far far away from her dream.
Even before she could settle down at her desk, one of her colleagues came up from behind. "Nandini... sir is calling you," she informed.
"Who? Raghav?" she hissed through gritted teeth.
"Yeah," replied her colleague to which Nandini slapped a hand to her forehead and bit her tongue.
"What happened today?" asked her colleague.
"Long story," she replied and rushed off to Raghav's cabin whilst mumbling "I swear I'll kill Manik if that guy tells me something stupid."
A chill shuddered down her spine as she entered and found Raghav sitting at his table with a sober expression plastered over his face. He shot at her grimly as she made her way in. He wasn't alone. A new guy who seemed to be in his mid-twenties was seated across the table. He had thick bushy eyebrows, sharp expressive eyes, sexy hair and a beautiful eye-catching three day old dark stubble.
"Sir, you called?" she asked suspiciously as she shot quick glances at the new guy in the cabin. Hang on, have I seen him somewhere before? Could it be...? She couldn't take her eyes off this guy.
"Yes Nandini. Please sit," Raghav waved his hand at the empty chair beside the new guy and waited for her to settle down before he continued. "Nandini. Of course, no introduction required. But still... this is Aryaman Khurana. And going forward, he will collaborate with you in all your field works."
Collaborate with me!!!? Aryaman Khurana! The name echoed like an explosion within her. She knew him! Yes, she did. Oh my God, she thought to herself, Aryaman Khurana? I don't believe this! I must be dreaming!
Aryaman Khurana was a celebrity reporter and ace cameraman who had unearthed and exposed a variety of tough to break through controversies. Ever since she watched his report on THE NATION'S VOICE channel, she had had a major crush on him. And right now, she couldn't even believe that she was sitting with him in her boss' dingy cabin.
"Hi," he flashed a sexy spine-tingling smile and shook hands with her. The touch of his rough and weather beaten hands against her tough little ones sent a jolt of electricity pulsing through her veins.
"Aryaman," Raghav looked ecstatic as he spoke. "I'm sure you've heard of Nandini before. She had worked on the Santam factory story earlier this month. The news was aired just last week on the Undercover show."
"Of course. Nandini Murthy..." replied Aryaman as he fixed his awe struck gaze upon her and set her cheeks on fire. "My mom just loves Undercover. And the reports are brilliantly done. Always. I've also had the good fortune to watch the infrastructure corruption case you exposed two months back. Thanks to which, we have a clean and solid tarred road out there."
Nandini was flattered! To hear someone like Aryaman acknowledge her work was something beyond her weird, wild fantasies.
Raghav chuckled in approval and Nandini flashed a bright smile through all her awkwardness. No matter how good it felt, praises always made her feel like a dork. This guy sounds so formal, she thought to herself, he talks as if he's writing a business letter or something. And he also sounds like mama's little boy. But what she couldn't help noticing was the butterflies that were fluttering violently in her stomach. More like dragonflies. He was making her feel insecure. He is too hot to handle, she thought as her cheeks burnt embarrassingly red.
Thanks to her childhood obesity issues, she never felt comfortable around any guy. Especially the good looking ones. True, she had overcome the problem through a lot of gruelling experiences but she never really did heal from the emotional scars she got from all the teasing, ridicule and loneliness. Hot guys just melted her away into a powerless, helpless goopy mess. Coming to think of it, Manik is the only guy I've been around in close quarters. Thank God, he never really cared about my looks.
When it came to dressing up, Nandini always took a bow out. She believed in keeping it sweet, short and simple. Dark coloured, long sleeved hugging T-shirts and jeans occupied a major part of her simple, scanty wardrobe. Then, a pair of cute sneakers to complete the picture. Make up stuck to bare minimums. A dash of her usual red lipstick and a quick puff of powder and deodorant was all that her ever wavering patience could tolerate.
"Just wait till you two get out there together," Raghav's voice cut through her deep seated thoughts. "Both of you will make a great team. Nandini. Remember our favourite topic of discussion a fortnight ago?"
"Um..." Nandini looked dumbfounded. What favourite topic? She wasn't really listening to him before. Rather, she was lost in the thicket of Aryaman's bushy eyebrows.
Being an older guy, it didn't take long for Raghav to make out that she was lost in her own fantasy world. But he quickly picked it up from there and covered up the awkwardness. "The human trafficking case by Regal Modelling Agency?"
"Oh haan!" she blurted out excitedly and tried to look like she knew what he was talking about.
"Aryaman was the man behind it," informed Raghav proudly.
"Wow! Oh wow! That was you! Yes! I remember!" Nandini felt really stupid as she blurted out the words.
Though Raghav was smiling, he had a what's wrong with this girl look in his eyes.
"So the next topic we'll be concentrating on is food poisoning," said Raghav. "Expose as many restaurants as possible. Their stores. Where their supplies come from. Et cetera. Et cetera."
"Yes sir," they replied in unison.
"And if you need any help, let me know. All the best!"

Meanwhile, Manik was hard at work, making his rounds in the geriatric wing of the hospital and checking in on the patients with tender love and care before his boss Dr. Alok Tiwari made his pompous appearance.
Manik walked around with a stethoscope hung over his neck and a sphygmomanometer in his hand. "How are you feeling today uncle?" he asked cheerfully as he checked in to the next room which was occupied by an old diabetic patient and one of his relatives.
"My leg..." he said weakly as Manik cuffed up the patient's arm and checked out his blood pressure. "It's been hurting like hell since last night."
"Where? Let me see that?" He made an entry into the patient's report before proceeding to check the old man's leg. A reddish blue discoloration shone right on the middle of his foot. "Over here?" asked Manik as he touched there gently to which the old man yelped in response.
"Oh God yes!" he moaned in agony.
"Don't worry," he said soothingly though he knew that the old man was coming up with gangrene. "The doctor will be here soon. Everything's going to be fine. Nothing to worry at all. Had breakfast?"
"N-no..." gasped the patient. "I don't feel like..."
"No-no-no-no! Don't say like that!" he pretended to sulk as he said that. He took out the man's blood sample and monitored his temperature as he continued to distract the old man from his pain with his talks. "You've got to eat. Only then you're going to recover. So don't say no. Or I won't come again. Do you want that? Or do you want me to send Rose instead?"
"No!" the man blurted out fearfully. Rose was one of the nurses in that wing. And she gave them a really awkward feeling with all her extra fittings tightly packed into the limited space of her uniform. There were times when patients had sworn that they could hear her balloons squeaking against the fabric of her scrubs.
Manik dreaded going to the next room. Grandpa James. But he had no choice. As he walked through the door, he spotted James sitting up on his bed. It seemed like he was desperately waiting for him. "Hello uncle. Early today?"
"Where the hell were you?" he spat in frustration. "I've been waiting since daybreak."
Manik was momentarily surprised at his unexpected outburst. Yet, he shrugged it off with a forced smile. "Everything okay?" he checked.
"No," he confessed angrily. "You very well know that I need to change first thing in the morning. And yet you people are so irresponsible!"
"I'm so sorry uncle. Assure you that it won't happen again. Let's get you into some good clothes right away." Saying this, he helped James to get into a pair of clean clothes whilst the man grew more and more frustrated. James was a very clean kind of guy and had to change into a fresh set of clothes at least twice in a day. Well, at least that's how Manik tried to convince himself. But a voice at the back of his head kept telling him that James had other tricks up his sleeve.
"Feeling better?" Manik checked whilst James began to look relieved to slip into clean garments.
"Ah yes. Thank you," he sighed and fixed his gaze on Manik who was now busy with monitoring the man's blood pressure. From the corner of his eyes, Manik could see that James was checking him out. It was so quiet that all what could be heard was the low hiss of the air being pumped into and released from the BP monitor's arm cuff.
"You're a really good looking boy," said James out of the blue. "Anyone ever told you that before?"
"Oh! Umm... Thank you so much uncle," replied Manik as he tried to take his comments normally. "Yeah. I guess maybe," he added dubiously.
"Maybe? Why maybe?"
"Well," Manik grew increasingly uncomfortable. "Compliments kind of don't stick around in my head. So..."
"Down to earth huh?" smiled James.
Manik smiled but felt more awkward.
"But who wouldn't fall for a boy like you?" James had a weird look on his face as Manik flashed an acknowledging smile before deflating the cuff and pulling it off his arm. "You look so good. So different."
Manik's confusion and anxiety was tripled by the eerie sensation of James' hand sliding up and down his forearm.
"Yeah," he went on and continued to stroke Manik and bore into his eyes. "Your hair... your eyes. They're deep. Mysterious."
Manik gulped a huge ball down his throat. The whole situation was mysterious. He wasn't liking this at all.
"There was a girl with you the other day. The little one... who picked you up. Is she your girlfriend?" the man smiled curiously.
Who is he... wait... is he talking about Nandini? Who else would tag along with me?
"Ahmmm..." Manik was so out of his senses. James' touch was giving him unpleasant memories of his school days where he used to get pushed around for being so girly. Even to the extent of being touched. "Actually..." his head kept playing games, debating on what to say. On how to handle this sticky situation. "Well yeah... she is..."
Manik felt a bit guilty for saying that. Well... what's wrong in that? She's a girl. And she's a friend. That makes her my girlfriend. Doesn't mean that we are lovers. I just answered to the point.
"Nice." James sounded interested. "She's really cute."
"Erm... yeah," he replied.
"Hmmm... So have you guys ever done it?" James' question felt like a slap.
"What?" Manik was shocked. "Done what?" he mumbled as he looked away.
"You know... getting laid..." James watched Manik intently as he said this. As for Manik... he couldn't even believe what he was hearing. He couldn't believe that some old guy was curious to know whether he had screwed his best friend or no.
"What are you even talking about?" Manik shrugged off his comment with an uneasy chuckle as he tried to concentrate on the report.
"I'm talking about sex," he said bluntly. "You're a nurse. How come all of this sounds so absurd to you?"
"No... I... what... erm... whatever..." From the bottom of his heart, Manik wished that the medical director would transfer him to some other department. He was even ready to take up casualty, even if it meant seeing blood and gore. Anything to not cross paths with James again. He made him feel so lost and troubled.
"Fine... have you guys at least kissed?" James wasn't ready to let it go.
Manik had had enough! He quickly grabbed hold of the man's hand which had been stroking his all this while. "I need to... give you an injection. Doctor's instructions."
James smirked. He got the message. Manik was irked. "Alright," he said grumpily and took the shot without another word.
As soon as he was done, he bolted out of the room as if he was being pursued by James' demon. His heart was thumping madly as he rubbed the nape of his neck, took deep breaths and paced up and down the corridor. He felt disgusted to the core. What the hell was he trying to do!!? And the stuff he was saying... This is the height of bullshit! I need to let it out! Nandini. I need to...
Just then his phone started to vibrate in his pocket. It was a call from Nandini. He hastily picked it up. "God! You know what buddy? I think you're going to live for a hundred years! I was just going to call you!" he sounded weak and jittery as he spoke.
"I know. I'm always trending in your thoughts." Nandini chuckled proudly. "But you know what!? You just won't believe what happened today!"
"What?" he asked weakly.
"Guess who I'll be working with on my next project? Aryaman Khurana!!!!" Nandini was literally bouncing on her toes.
"Aryaman who?" Manik didn't really care about anything. The blast of adrenaline he had experienced a while ago had left him trembling in the knees.
"Arre yaar! Aryaman! Don't you remember? That reporter from The Nation's Voice channel?"
"Oh haan," he lied. Of course, he had no clue who she was talking about. And he wasn't in the mood to find out.
"Man! You should see him! I can't even believe what's happening!!!"
Neither can I, thought Manik. His mind was still lost on the weird stuff that happened a while ago.
"Achcha, tell me what's wrong?" asked Nandini as she noticed that he wasn't too good.
"Huh?"
"What's wrong?" she repeated. "You sound so shitty. Is it James?"
"Yeah man," he sighed. "You'd make a good psychic."
"What did he say now?"
"He... was doing this time..."
"Doing? Doing what?" From the tone of his voice, Nandini was expecting to hear something terrible.
"I'll tell you in the evening yaar..." he said in a low voice and rubbed the centre of his brows. "Need to complete my rounds. And I so badly wish that I'd get departmental transfer or something. I can't take this shit anymore."
"Fine," replied Nandini. "You just chill. And text me or call me whenever you get free. Let's talk. Oh haan... and don't forget. We've got a performance tonight. I'll pick you up in the evening."
"I'll be at classes after work," he answered. "Catch me there at around 9 PM."
"Alright, see you in the evening."
