Chapter 18
The next morning was bright, birds singing; grass whistling and trees swaying to the music of the wind. Geet felt never better, waking up to a smiling sun basked her soul. While Maan was welcomed by darkness, his black curtains where pulled down not allowing any light to enter his life. After he crushed his light, his Geet. It was only darkness in his life, be it literal or symbolic, but no sun, no shine dazzled his being.
'Bhai you know what's today right' came the voice through the phone
'Umm kya hai' he mumbled too exhausted from last night's work out, more like torment. His fresh was clearly visible, his hands were infected due to the repeated attacks on his knuckles but nothing changed the pain in the heart.
'Anni's birthday bhai, so you have to be there for breakfast' Naina would have stressed how Maan was forgetting everything these days but stopped knowing that Maan's changed and if anything she still needed her brother since her husband was no longer the Brij she knew and married.
'Hmm' was all she got. Maan got up uncaring of his wounds or his blood stained hand and slowly got ready to face his wife. Whom he was sure he would see, oh how happy he was but at the same time it was terrifying him, not knowing how she would react, will she like it or not was the question.
First thing Geet did after getting ready was jump into Anni's room singing the birthday girl her song. After wishing her all the happiness in the world, she presented Anni with the gift and then ran towards the kitchen. Time was of essence, she needed to prepare the cake and it was her first day at work as well. Anni carefully removed the package, seeing the care and time spent in wrapping her gift. It was a simple gift, a silver frame with a picture of her, Geet and Pari. An unique gift, Geet could have brought anything with Maan's money but this Geet brought with her savings and for that Anni cherished it more. For a girl who was accustomed to expensive dresses, cars, jewellery, this was most definitely a simple but a precious gift for all the right reasons, for emotional reasons. After placing the frame on the bedside cabinet with a smile, she ran downstairs to thank Geet.
'Happy birthday Anni' Naina shouted hugging her baby sister, Brij and Pari too did the same before settling on the table for their normal celebratory breakfast. Each year the three siblings spent breakfast, lunch and dinner together on their respective birthdays to multiply their love for one another and to magnify their bank balance. Either way Maan had abundance of both for his darling sisters.
'Happy Birthday baby, sorry I was a little busy but you can buy whatever you want. Sky's the limit' he passed over his card to his baby sister who was over the moon to know that their family tradition was still running. This morning she was unsure whether Maan would be there since he avoided breakfast altogther but now everything seemed perfect.
'Nothing' she voiced pushing back his card and added 'just your happiness' in her mind. Her brother was just a figment of what he used to be, no she didn't want him back to his old ways but a healthy and a happy version of him would be her real gift. Geet sat beside her brother eyeing her husband, his bruised and barely skinned hand didn't evade her X-ray vision eyes either.
'Beta it's your big day today' Brij started seeing everyone quite, Maan was in a rush to finish off quickly and move out of Geet's sight before she gets further hurt
'Ha veerji, I'm scared' she brought her shivering hands out to show Anni and Brij
'You'll be fine I'm sure, haina Pari' Anni cheered along with Pari
'Of course she will, she has a way with people, kids included' Naina snubbed looking at her daughter who seemed more like Geet's than her's these days. The rest ignored since it was Anni's birthday, after a month Anni seemed genuinely happy and no one wanted to ruin that.
'She even has her ways with her ex' Naina carelessly dropped trying to gauge in her brothers expression
'Naina bas karo, if you can't behave you might as well leave now' Brij rebuked wanting to end this so called war
'Why me, it's her who's going round meeting Dev. That too in the mall, imagine what I felt when Mrs Mehta told me that. Main to sharram se paani paani hogayi (I was embarrassed)'
'Naina bas' Anni voiced seeing Geet not respond, what was wrong with her sister always on a different tangent
'Geet tell them what on earth you were doing with Dev' Niana raged seeing her sister side with the enemy
'BAS KARO, ENOUGH NAINA' Maan barked throwing the chair behind him making Geet jump
'Geet doesn't need to explain anything because I trust my wife completely, YOU OR ANYONE FOR THAT MATTER CAN'T CHANGE THAT' he announced looking straight into Geet's eyes before rushing out the door. Geet followed behind him too occupied by his wounds to care for the words, although somewhere down the line it felt good. Real good for her husband to take her side, for the trust he bestowed upon her.
'Get out' he shouted uncaring to look who is at his door but the knock persisted forcing him to turn around
'You need first aid' she muttered looking down while he just stared at the women in front. Slowly walking over, she asked him to sit beside her on the couch while she pulled out the ointment and dressing.
'It looks really bad' she admitted slowing apply the antiseptic cream but seeing him filch, she quickly blew air on to it hoping to calm his pain
'Is it still hurting?' she asked while bandaging his hand but he was too engrossed in her to take notice. Geet being with him, taking care of him and finally having a proper conversation with him was just too much for his system. He didn't know whether to be happy or sad.
'Can one undo all his hurt?' he timidly asked, deep down wanting to know whether there is a possibility of him and Geet.
'Umm maybe not all but at least he can try' she answered honestly, his thoughts evading her. She then collected her things and slowly walked out his bedroom giving him a small smile.
All the way to work, all she thought of was 'I trust my wife completely' which brought a huge smile to her face. Naina's words or her apprehension about her first day at work no longer held any importance. His words, his trust was all that mattered now. There was a time when she ran behind Dev to justify herself but here Maan trusted her even against his sisters. Could a girl ask for more? Unknowingly Maan gifted Geet with a precious girt, the gift of trust; of protection; of a new hope. While she gifted Maan of care and concern, he held his now bandaged hand kissing the dressing which she touched. Whether they will come to be or not, wasn't a thought no more but her caring for him was burning a light. The new light in both their hearts were burning, one for his trust in her and one for the care she had for him. Old lights which vanquished over the last few months would be lighted. Could the heart that died several deaths be born again, or is it too late? Could the little lights of the heart evoke love? Or would it die a silent death like all the previous lights?
Next: Final breakdown and Ruptured Heart
Note: Guys OMG's were nearly finishing here. CAN YOU BELIVE IT? Also after like a total 18 chapters they had a proper conversation, like civilised people which was solely initiated by them and not the circumstance. Tell me what you think of the New Maan, Anni and Brij - have I redeemed them even by a per cent?
All the Little Lights - Passenger (Beautiful song but quite old now influenced this chapter, no not my typical song selection but for some reason this one pulled a certain cord with me)
