Hi all..

As the present week and perhaps the next week of re-run of Jodha Akbar on Zee Anmol will deal with the marriage of Akbar and Mariam-Uz-Zamani. Hence, this is the perfect time to share the links of the DETAILED posts which talks about their marriage, i mean the REAL ones.

Here is some info about the same. The post is divided into 2 parts.

Part-1 is mostly about the political equations before the marriage of Akbar and MUZ. It talks about the events in the background.

453 years of Akbar and Harka Bai Marriage - I | Politics

Part-2 is about the events during the marriage starting from Akbar's visit to Ajmer and his talks with Amer family representatives and finally with Bharmal. Role of Chugtai Khan. And the movement back to Agra. Also included "something" about AKbar's horoscope, which Abu'l Fazl stresses upon while writing it in Akbarnama.

Abhay

Sorry for the inordinate delay :) You know how little i come here nowadays :)

Coming to this post:

I already commented about your beautiful posts related to the marriage of Akbar and HK earlier. I cannot think of anything to add to my views. :)

What i do want to say is that i am watching the show on Sony which has introduced the character of HK sometime back. Now that actor pair portraying Akbar-HK may not be as popular or enchanting as Rajat and Pari. And obviously, the show does not revolve around them. Yet, in the little space that HK gets, she has managed to convey her thoughts, emotions and views quite clearly in her interactions with Akbar, Salima Begum and Phool Kunwar. There is none of the ghrina or a sparring on an equal footing with Akbar - he is very much the Shahenshah and she very much a traditional wife who does not confront her husband. Yet she puts her point across whenever she gets half a chance and, yes, Akbar does encourage her to voice her views in a subtle manner, suggesting gently that it is her right, nay duty to "give the right advice" to her husband.

The way HK is against the alliance but gradually slips into the marriage and starts liking the hidden from the world, better side of her husband, and is pained when he decides to marry again, it's all brought out so beautifully.

There is none of Ruq's schemes but the jeers and taunts of Salima Begum (this portrayal pains me though - what has she been reduced to!) are rebuffed quietly with dignity and grace. I love this. This HK is not someone who goes all out with blazing guns but she is no doormat either. She is quite close to how the real HK may have been - purely my conjecture, of course. :)

HK's sympathetic attitude to the cause of Rajputana is perceptible and understandable. In her own way, she discourages Akbar from trying to conquer Rajputana without appearing to be an overt Rajput sympathiser.

Her convo with Phool wherein she expresses her anguish at having to marry the enemy, the compromise she had made with her fate when she had no other choice, her feeling of satisfaction that at least she had somehow saved her family and Amer even though she may be branded a coward for marrying a Mughal, was poignant and brought to the fore the many battles HK was fighting internally every day while trying to be the dutiful wife outwardly. The budding feelings of tenderness and love for her husband only seem to be adding to her misery. And yet, like a typical wife, she was heartbroken when Akbar declared his love for Phool and his intention to marry her. The nuances of a polygamous marriage are brought out beautifully there and i can actually feel what HK must have gone thru in accepting and then loving Akbar and then having to put up with his other alliances.

Some things have been shown in JA well. But some things have not been shown as well or not shown at all. i am only talking about the marriage shown between Akbar and Jodha here. Not other historical / fictional tracks. In the initial few months, Jodha was shown as a haughty princess who doesn't want to give her husband half a decent chance to get to even know her or be friendly with her. I don't know how far this could have been true, considering the protocols those days and how a woman was expected to remain subservient to her husband, esp if it had been a political alliance. True, HK was an equal partner to Akbar but that was LATER. Not from day 1.

Still, all this is acceptable. What is missing however is that we hardly ever got to peep into the heart and mind of HK and why she was behaving a certain way or how she felt about her husband and her new life. What was also missed was how HK adapted to the later wives of Akbar, after she had fallen for him. May women were shown in his life, but they were all fictional vamps who duly left Akbar HK in peace.

Sorry for rambling on. I don't know if i have been able to express what i have in mind. I feel that there was a lot of dramatic stuff shown while the subtler nuances of the trials and tribulations of the marriage were missed. Which is a pity because the show centres around these 2 people and i would have loved to see in detail how the 2 came together and stayed together despite all other wives and socio- political turmoil.

Sorry if i have hurt your or other readers' sentiment s with my views here. i know how much AkDha / Rajat Paridhi are loved and i love them too. I just wish we had a better script.

thank you for giving me the opportunity to voice my random thoughts , Abhay :)
