I am going to put it up in bits as I make up the scene and keep posting it as a reply whenever I finish and will also update this main post when I'm done..

He was so proud of Ranbir.. even though they had started the day on a rough note, he was glad to see him participating in the festivities.. if only things were different with the person standing next to him.. Ragini.. she had this amazing ability to make him feel so alone when she wanted to .. so small and so isolated.. it felt like quarantine.. just this morning they had shared a comfortable habit, of helping each other dress up.. how natural and normal his hands at felt at the hem of her saree, helping her pin it in place and her trust him with it..

And just like that, she had snapped at him.. assuming the worst with Nivedita. He shuddered to think what Ragini actually thought of him nowadays.. desperate, lonely man, perhaps? Prehaps she could no longer read his eyes.. because if she could.. he mentally sighed and distracted himself with Ranbir who had almost broken the matki.. Ragini was positively beaming.. it was quite a moment for her!

He turned around to see if Aarav had made it to the celebrations, risking missing out on the celebrations after the matki was broken.. and at that same moment, Ranbir had slipped and he heard Ragini let out a shrill 'Nachiket' before she ran over..

He swore the hair on his arms stood on its end when he heard her worried voice.. before he could fathom what was going on, he saw Ranbir tumble down the human pyramid and Ragini trying to break his fall.. Ranbir tried his best to shield his body and cause less harm but he was falling.. there was only so much he could do.. and in that moment, Ragini seemed to have forgotten Ranbir was no longer her small baby.. who she could catch in her arms spread out wide..

He came crashing down on her and he heard a sickening snap of a bone and he closed his eyes relfexively.. even before he had ascertained it, he knew it was bad... he had no courage to see what it was.. but his heart was pumping as fast as it could antcipating the worst.. his eyes flew open because of the fear of the two people he loved being hurt.. Ranbir stood on his feet and dusted some soil off his shirt and checked his bruised arm.. and then Nachiket heard another shriek..

Nac... aaah!

His heart sank.
