Veteran actor Dharmendra, who passed away on November 24, 2025, at the age of 89, has been posthumously awarded the Padma Vibhushan, recognising his decades-long contribution to Indian cinema. His wife, actor and politician Hema Malini, reacted with pride, stating that her late husband “deserved it much earlier” and called the honour a matter of great respect.

Hema Malini shared that she received the news about Dharmendra’s Padma Vibhushan on Sunday morning and was deeply moved. Speaking to Hindustan Times, she said, “As an actor, and as a human being too, he has been such a wonderful person. He would always help people, and that was extraordinary. He deserves this.” She added, “He deserved it much earlier as well. Anyway, that they have given now is itself a matter of great honour.”

The actress also posted a heartfelt note on her official X handle, writing, “So so proud that the govt has recognised Dharam ji’s immense contribution to the film industry by bestowing on him the prestigious Padma Vibhushan award.” The post reflected her admiration for Dharmendra’s career and his enduring influence on generations of audiences.

Dharmendra’s cinematic journey spanned more than six decades, earning him recognition as one of Bollywood’s most beloved actors. His career included iconic films such as Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Dharam Veer and Dream Girl. In his later years, he received praise for performances in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani and Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya. His final film, Ikkis, released posthumously earlier this month.

This year’s Padma Awards 2026 list includes five Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan and 113 Padma Shri recipients. Alongside Dharmendra, notable awardees from the entertainment sector include singer Alka Yagnik (Padma Bhushan), actor Mammootty (Padma Bhushan), and Padma Shri recipients such as R. Madhavan, Prosenjit Chatterjee and the late Satish Shah. The Ministry of Home Affairs unveiled the list on the eve of Republic Day, honouring individuals for their exceptional contributions across cinema, arts, and other fields.

Dharmendra’s posthumous recognition underlines his lasting impact on Indian cinema, celebrating a career marked by memorable performances and a legacy that continues to inspire.
