Abhijit Majumdar, one of Ollywood’s respected music composers, passed away on Sunday in Bhubaneswar. He was 54. His death has left the Odia film industry in shock, marking the loss of a creative force whose music shaped regional cinema.

Majumdar breathed his last at AIIMS Bhubaneswar on January 25. He had been undergoing treatment since September 4, 2025, after being diagnosed with multiple health issues, including hypertension, hypothyroidism and chronic liver disease. His condition reportedly worsened on Saturday night, following which he was placed on life support. He succumbed to his illness earlier on Sunday.

He is survived by his wife, Ranjita Majumdar, and their son. News of his passing spread quickly through the industry, with colleagues, artistes and fans expressing grief over the loss. Many described him as a composer who understood the emotional pulse of Odia cinema.

Abhijit Majumdar began his professional journey in 1991, working in the Sambalpuri music space. By the early 2000s, he had established himself as a prominent name in Ollywood. Over the years, he composed music for films, albums and independent projects, contributing more than 700 songs across Odia and Sambalpuri cinema.

His body of work includes popular films such as Love Story, Sister Sridevi, Golmaal Love, Mr Majnu, Sriman Surdas and Sundergarh Ra Salman Khan. Known for adapting his style to changing trends while retaining a local flavour, Majumdar remained relevant across generations. His final composition will feature in the upcoming Odia film Poglu, slated for release later this year.

Majumdar’s prolonged health battle had been followed closely. After his admission to AIIMS Bhubaneswar in September, he remained in critical condition and was placed on ventilator support. On December 31, 2025, doctors had indicated improvement. However, his condition deteriorated again.

Tributes poured in after the confirmation of his death. Former actor and Odisha MLA Akash Das Nayak wrote on X, “I am saddened by the passing of playback singer and music director Abhijit Majumdar. His remarkable contribution to the film and music industry will always be remembered. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and pray to Lord Shri Jagannath for the eternal peace of the departed soul. Om Shanti.”
