Chapter 45

Zoya was in the kitchen munching on some apple slices as instructed by Dilshad. Dilshad was cooking along with Nasreen Khala. Zoya couldn't leave until she finished the apple and the glass of milk that was next to it on the counter. "Zoya, jaldi se khatam karo! Dood thanda horaha hai," Dilshad ordered. "Jee Ammi," Zoya said. She had been deliberately delaying the process, in the hope that she could avoid drinking the milk. The milk made her feel nauseated and she hated it. She finished the last slice of apple and was about to grab the glass of milk when her husband barged into the kitchen. "Zoya...chalo!" he said. "Kya hua Asad? Sabh khairat?" Dilshad said looking at him. "Jee Ammi...mujhe bas Zoya se kuch kaam hai," Asad said as he took hold of her wrist. "Aree ruko...phele usse dood toh peene do," Dilshad said noticing the full glass of milk next to Zoya. "Ammi...main baad mein peelongi. Abhi kaam haina," Zoya said hoping to avoid drinking the milk. "Nahi! Kohi bahana nahi Zoya. Doh minute mein dood khatam karo," Dilshad sternly ordered. Zoya sulked even at the thought of drinking milk. "Ammi please," Zoya said. "kuch nahi suna hai mujhe, chalo pee jao," Dilshad said. Zoya pouted and picked up the glass. Asad just smiled at the scenario in front of his eyes. Zoya quickly gulped down the milk and grimaced at the foul after taste. "Aabh jao?" Zoya asked Dilshad. She smiled, "Ha jao...mera accha baccha!" Dilshad said making Asad chuckle. "Aap hass kyun rahe hai?" Zoya asked glaring at him. "Kuch nahi...chalo," Asad said as he took her away from there. Dilshad just smiled at the couple. Zoya was such a child sometimes, especially when it comes to eating proper food. Now, with her morning sickness becoming worse, she tried to avoid eating which wasn't good for her. The doctor had advised to still try to eat, and had suggested that if the symptoms didn't subside soon then they could try medication. It has become the task of Dilshad and Asad, when he was at home, to feed Zoya her food. Dilshad just prayed that Zoya and the baby have a health journey ahead.

Climbing up the stairs, "kya kaam hai Asad?" Zoya asked. "Tume kuch dikhana hai," he told her. "Mujhe? Kya?" Zoya said getting excited. "Surprise hai" he stated. Reaching their room, Asad covered her eyes and took her in. "Asad, kya karahe hai? Mujhe dekhna hai," she whined. "Just two minutes," he said. He carefully walked further into the room, near the bed. "Ready?" he said and she nodded happily, waiting to see what he wanted to show her. He slowly removed his hand and told her to open his eyes. Zoya was amazed seeing what was placed on her bed. Asad had the whole bed filled with toys, baby clothes, and gift boxes. "Wow! Yeh sabh aapne kiya hai," Zoya said surprised. Asad wrapped his hands around her waist and placed his chin on her shoulder. "Accha laga?" he asked. "Accha...Mr. Khan yeh toh bahut accha hai," Zoya said as she got out of his grip and moved towards the bed. There were so many toys of all different kinds. He had soft toys, music toys, and soft books. Zoya caressed the little things and smiled thinking about their child. Her baby was so blessed to have a father like Asad. She picked one of the jumpsuits that Asad had bought. "Daddy's little princess," it read with a crown beneath it. A huge smile crept over Zoya's lips. "Aapko beti chahiye? Zoya asked looking at Asad. "Ha...bilkul tumari jaisi," he said. "Actually mujhe bhi beti hi chahiye. Main na usse har din alag alag costumes mein tyaar karongi," she told him. Asad smiled as he watched her speak. He loved seeing her smile. Even today, her smile made his heart flutter. He felt peace fill his heart seeing her like that. "Kya dekh rahe hai?" she asked catching him stare at her. "Kuch nahi,"Asad said as he took a seat on the bed and made her sit in front of him. "Accha Asad, agar humari beti aapki princess hai toh main kya hoon?" Zoya asked curiously. "Tum toh anarkali ho, jahapanah ki anarkali," he said pinching her cheeks. Zoya giggled, "Mr. Khan...aap aise filmy baatein karte huwe bahut ajeeb lagthe hai. Par mujhe accha lagtha hai," she told him."Accha...aabh tum yeh gifts kholo," he told her indicating to the two wrapped boxes in front of her. Zoya picked up the bigger box first and unpacked it.

Opening it, she found something wrapped in a tissue paper. A smile crept up her lips when she saw what the box contained. It was a wind chime. Zoya pulled it out of the box, "wow Asad...yeh toh bahut hi pyaara hai," she said observing its design. The chime had two birds on top with a nest placed in front of it. Beneath were strings of chimes hanging with a baby bird of different color at the end of each string. "You know, yeh bhi humare tyaara ek baccha ka intezaar karahe hai," he said. "Main na isse window par laaga dehti hoon, phir jab bhi yeh hawa se hilega toh hume humare bacche ki aane ki aahat hogi," Zoya said excitedly. She quickly ran up to the sofa next to the window and climbed up on it. "Zoya...kya karahi ho?" Asad said as he rushed up to her. "Main isse waha laaga rahi hoon," she said pointing to the nail on the rim of the window. "Zoya, tum aabh pregnant, neeche utro," he said sternly offering her his hand. Zoya mumbled a sorry and stepped down with the help of him. "Yeh aap laaga dijiye phir," she said. He took the wind chime from her and was about to climb up the couch when she stopped him. "Naraaz hoke mat karayi," she told him. "Main naraaz nahi hoon. Bas tum aabh phele jaise yaha se waha huchal khud nahi karsakthi," he said. "I know...main bas excitement mein bhul gayi. Aabh please muskura dijiye," she pleaded with a pout. Asad smiled seeing his adorable wife. "Aabh laaga doon?" he asked. Zoya nodded. Asad climbed up and hung the wind chime in its place. They returned to the bed and Asad gave her the second gift box which was much smaller in size. Zoya opened it and found a charm inside. It was shaped like a cradle. She looked up at Asad. "Maine humare best moment koh humari yaadein mein shamil karna chatha hoon," he told her as he took the charm. He pulled her closer and placed the charm in the bracelet she was wearing since their anniversary. Asad looked up to see her beautiful hazel eyes filled with love, admiring him. He loved their child so much. Only if all fathers were like that, she thought. She looked away as her eyes brimmed with tears. "Zoya," he said concerned. She blinked trying to hold back the tears, "Main theek hoon Asad," she said as she looked at the floor. Asad placed his finger at the tip of her chin and forced her to look up and meet his orbs. Tears streamed down her cheeks. "Humara baccha bahut lucky hai Asad joh usse aap jaise Abu mile hai. Uske aane se phele hi aap uska kitna khayal rakte hai, kash sabh Abu asie hi hote," Zoya said as she hid herself in his arms. Asad felt his heart ache hearing her words. He slowly caressed her head. She was trying so hard to be strong but he knew that she was breaking inside. She felt that she had been a burden on her own father for the past 22 years. She wasn't a child who was welcomed with open arms by her father and that had affected her a lot. "Zoya, please rohna mat. They are not worth your tears," he whispered in her ears. Zoya wiped her tears, "Mr. Khan...please vaada kijiye keh joh kuch bhi hojaye...aap humare bacche koh khabhi akele nahi chodengi," she said sobbing. "Of course Zoya, khabhi nahi. Main tumare aur humare bacche keh saath hamesha rahonga," he told her. "Main nahi chathi keh humare baccha khabhi bhi akele rahe...khabhi bhi nahi," she said as her voice cracked. "Zoya...hum haina, aisa kuch nahi hoga," he told her, tightening his grip around her shoulder.

The next evening, the Siddiqui's were invited over to the khan mansion to discuss Haider and Humeira's wedding date and preparations. The family was seated in the living room talking as Gaffur kept looking at Zoya. She stood behind Asad who was seated on the sofa in front of Gaffur, trying to avoid eye contact. After she had returned the gifts, he had called and tried to talk to her but she had hung up on him. He hadn't called again and she had been thankful. But, she was afraid. She was troubled that looking at him with make her weak and she might tell everyone everything. She couldn't do that, for Humeira's sake. Gaffur, on the other hand, had been extremely hurt when his daughter returned his gifts. On top of that, his wife was doing a perfect job of rubbing salt on his wounds by constantly reminding him that he had ruined their perfect family by bringing Zoya into their lives, and now that girl didn't respect him or talk to him. He didn't blame her though. He blamed himself! He was at fault for lying to her, for hurting her. He deserved all the punishment in the world. He would try the rest of his life repenting and apologizing to her for what he did. After discussing, the elders had set the date 2 months from now. Humeira still had a month or so of her final semester and they would need some time after that, to prepare for the wedding. Everyone was extremely happy and were congratulating one another. Zoya hugged Humeira, "main tumare liye bahut khush hoon," she said happily. "Thanks bhaji," Humeira said with a shy smile. "Awww...you are blushing," Zoya teased. Dilshad walked up to them to bless Humeira. Zoya excused herself and left for the kitchen to see if dinner was ready. She walked into see Nasreen Khala putting rice in the serving bowl. "Khala...aap ek kaam kijiye...aap upar se kapde ley lijiye, lagtha hai barish aane wali hai. Main yaha dekh longi," Zoya said. "Theek hai beta. Main Latif koh bhejo?" she asked. "Nahi Khala, uski tabeyat theek nahi hai. Main karlongi," Zoya said with a smile. Nasreen left and Zoya started to arrange the rest of the things.

After some time, everything was in their appropriate serving utensils except for the dessert. She opened the lid to the kadai to hear someone walk in. Thinking it was Dilshad, "Ammi...sabh hogaya hai...aap fikar...," she stopped seeing who was at the door. "Aap yaha?" she asked seeing her father at the door. "Zoya, beti...meri," he started when she interrupted him. "Please mujhe beti mat kahiye. Shayad aap bhul gaye hai main sirf Zainab Farooqui ki beti hoon," she firmly stated. Gaffur moved towards her, "main jaanta hoon keh mujhse bahut baadi galati huwi hai par please mujhe ek aur mauka dehdo, maaf kardo apne Abu koh," he pleaded. "Kyun? Taaki aap koh ek aur mauka mil jaye mujhe takleef pauchane ka," she said. "Please Zoya, aisa nahi hai. Tum samaj ne ki kosish karo," Gaffur said. Zoya let out a sarcastic chuckle, "samaj ne ki hi kosish karahi hoon main keh aap itne saal mujhe jhoot kyun bola. Mujhe ek baar keha diya hota keh main najayaz nahi, na hi yateem hoon. Aap nahi jaante keh bachpan se yeh sunte huwe mujhe kitni takleef huwi hai," she said, her voice almost cracking at the end as she tried to hold back her tears. Gaffur stepped closer but she moved back. "Please, aap yaha mehmaan banke aaye hai. Main nahi chathi keh kohi tamasha ho," she said. "Main samaj tha hoon keh tum mujhe bahut gussa ho lekin tumse binti kartha hoon keh mujhe apne nawasa ya nawasi keh zindagi ka issa banne ki ijazat doh," Gaffur said. "Aap samaj the kyun nahi...door rahi hai mujhse aur meri zindagi se," she yelled. Why he couldn't just leave her alone, she thought. Gaffur wanted to make things right. He couldn't just accept his daughter keeping him away from her or his unborn grandchild. He was about to touch her head when someone held his hand, stopping him. He turned to see Asad. His eyes red with anger and face stiff as a rock. After her breakdown yesterday, he had consoled her to forget everything and move forward. Zoya was trying to get away from her past and here Gaffur was, making things worse. Being depressed is not good for Zoya or their child. He couldn't see her like this, sad! It hurt him! "Aapne shayad theek se suna nahi, Zoya nahi chathi keh aap usse ya humare bacche koh pareshaan kare," he firmly stated. "Asad...main apni beti se baat karaha hoon," Gaffur said, upset on Asad's behavior. "Aur main apne biwi ki baat aapko samja raha hoon," Asad told him. "Asad jaane doh please. Warna sabh koh paata chal jayega," Zoya said. Asad looked at her but didn't release Gaffur from his hold. "Siddiqui saab, aapne phele hi bahut takleef di hai meri biwi koh, aabh aur nahi. Aap baade hai issliye main iss baat koh aise hi chod raha hoon lekin agar aapne phir Zoya koh dhuki kiya toh main kya karsaktha hoon, aap jaante nahi!" Asad said frustrated as he released his hand. Asad held Zoya's hand and took her away, leaving an upset Gaffur behind.

The next evening, the khan family was enjoying dinner when Rashid, "mujhe sabh se kuch baat karni thi," he announced. Everyone stopped eating and gave him their attention. "Aaj subhe meri ek dost ka phone aaya tha, woh aapne kissi rishtedaar keh bete kehliye Najma ka rishta maang rahe the," he told everyone. The men all smiled hearing the news and the women turned to see Najma's reaction. Najma was surprised. She wasn't even done with college and her parents were already planning to send her off. She just looked at her food trying to avoid all the eyes that were on her at the moment. "Najma...kuch bolo beta," Rashid said. She was just silent. That was so unlike Najma who was always talkative and bubbly. "Najma...kuch toh bolo," Nikhat, who was sitting to her, whispered. "Mujhe shaadi nahi karni hai abhi," Najma said. "Beta...kyon sa hum kal hi rishta pakka kardenge. Woh log sirf tumse milna aur dekhna chathe hai. Jab tak tum ha nahi kahongi toh hum aage nahi badenge," Rashid explained. "Phir bhi Abu...mujhe abhi college khatam karna hai aur main kaam bhi karna chathi hoon," Najma told him. "Tum shaadi keh baad bhi yeh sabh karsakthi hona beta," Dilshad suggested. "lekin Ammi, kya woh log aisa karne denge. Sabh aap logo keh jaise supportive toh nahi hote," Najma stated the facts. Everyone nodded, agreeing with her. "Saach kaha tumne lekin beta hum unse baat karenge. Kuch bhi tumari marzi keh bina nahi hoga," Rashid assured. "Sirf milna haina?" Najma asked. "Ha beta, sirf milna hai," he said. "Phir theek hai," Najma said. Everyone was happy to hear that. "Accha hai...tum chali jaogi toh meri ice cream kohi nahi chorayega," Haider said. "Ammi...dekho na!" Najma complained. "Haider," Dilshad said glaring at him. "Kya Ammi...saach hi toh bol raha hoon main," Haider said only to receive a slap from Farhan and Asad. "Dekhna jab main iss ghar se jaungi...aaphi sabh se zyada rohyenge," Najma said sticking her tongue out. "In your dreams," Haider said as everyone chuckled at the brother-sister duo.

The next day, Najma insisted that she had to go shopping. "Ammi...main acchi dikhna chathi hoon. Mere paas kohi bhi acchi dress nahi hai, please mujhe shopping jaana hai," Najma said. "Theek hai...tum apne Bhabhis koh lekar jaana," Dilshad said. "Really? Ammi...you are the best!" Najma said hugging her mother. Dilshad smiled. "Bahut dher na karna aur Nikhat aur Zoya ka khayal rakna," she said. "Jee Ammi," Najma said. After a while, Najma, Nikhat, and Zoya were at the mall. Najma went to different stores. She wanted to buy a dress to wear for the weekend when the guy's family was coming to see her. His name was Sahir. He was a computer analyst by profession. That's pretty much the information she had at the moment. She was nervous, extremely nervous. But, nothing seemed to be to her taste. If she liked the color, she didn't like the design or vice versa. She wanted something not too grand or too simple. Finally, she found a green and pink combination anarkali with light, silver sequencing. "Yeh accha hai Bhabhi?" Najma asked Nikhat and Zoya. "Tum par bahut pyaara lagega," Nikhat said. "Ha...chalo try karke dekho," Zoya suggested. Najma nodded, took the dress and went to the dressing room. Minutes later, Najma stepped out dressed in the anarkali. Both Nikhat and Zoya grinned, "Tum bahut acchi lagrahi ho," they both said in unison. "Main moti toh nahi lagrahi hoon na?" Najma asked nervously. "Nahi Najma...tum bahut acchi lagrahi hoon" Nikhat said. "Bhabhi...agar unn logo ne mujhe na keha diya toh," she said. "Nervous ho?" Zoya asked. Najma nodded in response. "Dekho Najma, tum jaisi hoon bahut acchi ho. Aur ek baat yaad rakna, Allah ne hum sabh koh jodiyo mein bheja hai aur har kissi kehliye kohi na kohi kahi bana hai. Tumare liye bhi Allah ne kisiko banaya hoga joh tumse bahut pyaar karega, tum jaisi ho waise hi pyaar karega," Zoya said caressing Najma's cheek. "inshAllah," Nikhat said with a smile. "Thank you Bhabhi," Najma said as she hugged Zoya. "You are always welcome. Aap tum jaake change karlo...hum kuch khane chalthe hai," Zoya said. "Aapko bhook lagi haina?" Najma asked breaking apart. "Ha...bahut! Mujhe chaat khani hai. Waise bhi Asad nahi hai mujhe rokne kehliye," Zoya said making Nikhat and Najma chuckle. "Theek hai...main abhi aati hoon," Najma said and went back to the dressing room. After she returned, they paid for the dress and headed towards the food court.

As they were walking towards the food court, Zoya felt the room spinning. She stumbled and caught on to Najma. "Bhabhi...aap theek toh haina?" Najma said concerned. "Achanak chakkar aaraha hai," Zoya said. Nikhat and Najma helped her sit down on one of the chairs nearby. "Shayad tumara BP low hogaya hai...main jakar kuch laati hoon," Nikhat said as she quickly grabbed her purse and left to get something for Zoya. Najma tried calling the driver to have him come pick them up. "Paata nahi kyun phone nahi lagraha hai," she worried. "Tum parking lot mein jaake dekho...shayad waha reception nahi hai," Zoya said. "Lekin Bhabhi...aap," Najma said worried. "Tum chinta mat karo...main theek hoon. Tum jao, main yehi rahongi," Zoya assured. Najma nodded and left to find their ride back home. Zoya took the water bottle out of her bag and took a few sips. She was starting to feel a little better. At that moment, she felt someone tap her on her shoulder. She looked up to see a guy in his mid to upper 30s dressed in jeans and a black t-shirt. He also had a cap on his head and with the sun hitting his face, it was getting hard for Zoya to recognize him. She stood up, "jee...aap kyon?" she asked. The next thing she knew, she was engulfed into embrace in the unknown guy's arms. Zoya struggled to get out. "chodo mujhe...kyon hai aap?" she said but it had no effect on the other person. She tried hard to break free but the man was too strong for her. Finally, she put in her deepest efforts and pushed him away. Her hand collided with his face, "batameez!" she said slapping him. Nikhat and Najma reached the scene to see Zoya slapping some guy. As the guy saw them approaching, he ran away. "Zoya...kya hua? Tum yeh..."Nikhat asked. Zoya still couldn't process everything happened. Everything had occurred so fast. She didn't know if she had to be upset or angry over what had just happened. "Paata nahi Bhabhi...achanak woh aakar batameezi karne laaga. Paata nahi kyon tha," Zoya said. Nikhat and Najma could see that she was upset. "Accha chodo yeh sabh...yeh lo main tumare liye samose aur juice laayi hoon, tum khalo," Nikhat said. "Nahi Bhabhi...chaliye ghar chalte hai," Zoya said. "Ha Bhabhi...chaliye. Driver humare liye wait karahe hai," Najma informed. The three ladies decided to leave. On the way home, Nikhat managed to feed Zoya some food. They decided that they wouldn't inform the other family members about the incident. They thought that it might have been a misunderstanding or something, and if the elders came to know, they wouldn't be comfortable with letting them go out alone again.
