WHO would think like this, clearly has no knowledge of history and what great warrior Maharana Pratap was.

I would just like to use few phrases "lose a battle but win a war", "tactical retreat", "lakh mare to chalega lekin unka poshinda (that is leader/provider) jina chahiye" - these phrases have a meaning that seems to be lost on whoever can twist a brave warrior's fight into something ugly!

Maharana Pratap was ANYTHING but a coward. He could have chosen to live easy luxurious cozy life if he had entered into cowardly convenient alliance with Akbar for saving his life. Instead he chose to fight for his motherland, for his religion and for his people. He did not just risk his own life he risked of his entire family.

This is why TODAY when Indians think of Heroes the names that come to mind immediately are just two - Maharana Pratap and Shivaji Maharaj. That they chose the hard life with risk to not just their own lives but their families over cowardice and luxuries is why we love them today.

It is said that you need to remember those who have been part of shaping history - Maharana Pratap and Shivaji Maharaj do not need to be remembered cos NO INDIAN PERSON WILL EVER FORGET THEM. You remember those who get forgotten. These two still live in the hearts of people centuries later.

19th February 1630 was great Shivaji Maharaj's birth date and this coming Thursday is his 385-th birth anniversary. Maharana Pratap was decades older than him - still even today if you ask ANY CHILD to name greatest heroes and fighters of this country they will name Maharana Pratap and Shivaji Maharaj.

Anybody who thinks otherwise needs to brush up his/her knowledge, information and prejudices!

Agree Maddy...I was also shocked after reading the title of the thread. I don't watch the show, nor am I a regular on this forum, but have read enough about the great Maharana to know the difference between right and rubbish.
Tactical retreat...exactly. Kaana has quoted some great examples from history/ mythology. Your third paragraph is a much needed " common sense" conclusion based on facts...he could have chosen an easy life. Akbar would have been more than happy to make him a rich mansoobdaar...But, he did not give up on his motherland and chose to live in forests, surviving on bare minimum just so he could fight for his motherland. And he did...It is not rocket science to understand a person's personality based on actions, circumstances and outcome.
Shivaji Maharaj...another favorite of mine. Real life heroes. They deserve nothing but respect. It is sad to see that some people have the audacity to question these great men after watching these
" historical" Saas bahu soap operas. I would like to invite them for a debate. Prove it...with facts. Or else...don't show your ignorance and lack of common sense by passing judgement and humiliating real people who are much more worthy of respect than you and me. To me, respecting these heroes is as natural as respecting our soilders giving up their lives on the border to keep our nation safe. Of course, there are people who sit in their living room munching on pakoras busy questioning the integrity of fallen soilders and freedom fighters. The best I can do is to mail some history and GK books to their address so they can be ready for an intelligent debate.

Hi Kaana
Long time! Hope you are doing fine :)

These days, I am beginning to doubt the efficacy of absolute freedom of speech (without a sense of responsibility or respect for others) considering that this right is being used to assault the character of many thoughtlessly.

I don't worry too much about those who call MP a coward. He doesn't NEED anyone's endorsement. He is GREAT. Period. He has proved himself thru his actions and shown how ONE person can stand upto a mighty empire thru sheer will power and relentless persistence. His guerrilla tactics have been adopted by many groups of people fighting for liberation from powerful armies around the world.

I agree with the view expressed here by other friends that if he really had been a coward, he would have agreed to Mughal supremacy and not lived in the jungle among tribals for many years, fighting a lone battle to free his beloved Mewar.

i loved everyone's comments here and Kaana, your main post is awesome! The way you build your arguments using facts and examples to validate them in a legal manner is still as engaging to read as ever. Thanks for the PM. Even I am not active on IF and would definitely have missed this post otherwise.:)

Hi Kaana,

I don't know if you are still watching MP. But, as promised, since you are a fellow big fan of REAL MP , here are my two cents about 2 of the finests warriors of Rajputana..

If he was such a coward, why didn't he just make a treaty with Akbar? He did not have to fight any wars then and did not have to live in forests for many years. Why did he never give up on his principles? He sacrificed a lot to continue to fight for his people, his motherland, his principles. It takes a lot of guts to do that. The person who thinks he was a coward should ask himself / herself if they are willing to make a sacrifice and live like he did for any one principle of their choosing.

Well said Coderlady! Absolutely upholding even one simple principle is so difficult even in normal times, bit here is our glorious hero not compromising in his mathrubhoomi dharm even in such trying times when alliance with Akbar was always there as a easy way out, which all others succumbed to at some time or the other.

Also there was no compromise on other principles too- Rajim Khanekhana's harem folks were sent back to him safely. Even when the enemies and all those around where engaged in unethical means, he was steadfast. And how much he could have gained by the harem angle, still hus great values took precedence. Truly Amazing!

Maddy's, Cleo's, Radhika's, Meenu's, for that matter all posts here are just lovely, so true and reiterates the truth. Thank you all for the wonderful reading about my greatest ever hero.
