A guess.I think western culture gives much emphasis to individual independence that it weakens family ties overtime.Most people adapt well and get integrated to social circles once they are of age and start living on their own but to certain some,it results in social isolation.With neither family's nor friends shoulder to cry on,I bet that would mess up their minds.That, with a comparatively easy access to guns becomes a deadly combination.

Eastern culture is about collectives.In the west, the community owes the individual.
