The term serial killings' means a series of three or more killings, not less than one of which was committed within the United States, having common characteristics such as to suggest the reasonable possibility that the crimes were committed by the same actor or actors.
"

What does the bold portion even mean!!!?😆 just trying to understand what does less than one killing mean.. someone stabs somebody constantly then applies bandages every now and then...😆...

Oh, pretty simple actually.

Per definition, serial killing = 3 or more killings.

Out of these 3, at least one killing has to take place within the United States.

So, if I am a serial killer, and I kill 3 people outside of US, my victims won't be counted towards the count of serial murder within US. But if I kill at least one in US, and two overseas, my victim will be considered as a serial murder victim and will contribute to the percentage of 1 or so.

^^ OK, this time I beat you to it.

Last time, you beat me to the definition of "sex outside of marriage" so I let it stand in that thread. Otherwise, I would have amended my post :)

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Unhappy-India-sinking-further-ranks-117th-in-world-happiness-index/articleshow/47041788.cms

In the world happiness index, US ranks 15th, Switzerland ranks 1st and India ranks 117th.

"The index considers current conditions and also takes into account not just economic measures, but also positive social relations, characterized by values such as trust, benevolence and shared social identities that contribute positively to economic outcomes as well as delivering happiness directly.

Pro-social behavior, including honesty, benevolence, cooperation, and trustworthiness, entails individuals making decisions for the common good that may conflict with short-run egoistic incentives, the report explains. Countries that are at the top of the rankings show evidence of high social capital, while those at the bottom show the opposite: generalized distrust, pervasive corruption, and lawless behavior (e.g. widespread tax evasion that deprives the government of the needed funds to invest in public goods)."

To the armchair psychologists on this thread: before making disparaging remarks about one country and gloating over another, don't just go by your imagination; research facts and figures. You may be surprised how wrong you are regarding some of your preconceived notions.

Wow, and countries like Palestinian Territories, Pakistan, Ukraine, rank higher than India...
I wonder who is really taking these stats and indexes and on what basis...

Report is published by United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network.

Survey is conducted by Gallup.

Questionnaire is set by leading economists, neuroscientists and statisticians.

and on what basis...

Factors considered are GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity, perception of corruption, everything else.

Point is, we should let the real experts analyze how social support and mental health correlate to the neuroscience of happiness and only post meaningful data for comparative analysis, discussion and debate. There is no point in debating vague, empty statements about "families, culture, society, individualism" etc.

Does population play a role in these statistics and bring down the rank ? Also state censorship .I mean looking at the parameters it really makes no sense to see Ukraine , Palestinian Territories score a high ranking. Or the people there happy with the "lawless" behavior, corruption and have trust in however is leading the parade down there.

Fine. I will get serious.

Here's a link from the FBI, yes the FBI, that says that serial murder is a relatively rare event, estimated to comprise less than one percent of all murders committed in any given year. You have to admit, it can't get any more official than this. And in the US, there are about 15000 intentional homicides a year. So, make it about 150 victims who die in the hands of serial killers, per year.

http://www.fbi.gov/stats-services/publications/serial-murder

It also says that it is a myth to think a) Serial killers are all dysfunctional loners.b) Serial killers are only motivated by sex. c) All Serial killers are insane or are evil geniuses.

There is a serial killer symposium which talks about psychopathy and serial murder in case you are truly interested in knowing what makes an average Joe or Jill, a serial killer. But I have my doubts about your sincerity, judging by the way the thread has progressed so far, as though this is a support group congregation of people who got dumped by US immigration.

LOL at the last line! 😆

No we are not ones dumped by US immigration. Erroneous assumption.

Keep to the topic. Everything is discussed. Just as it happens in Rape in India threads.

I said "as though this is a support group congregation of people who got dumped by US immigration".

"As though" is not an assumption. It is a conjunction used to make comparison.

Example: you are here as though you are capable of saying anything remotely smart.

sorry for raining on the Indians-are-unhappy parade😆, but since i remembered reading something distinctly opposite to what has been posted by dear friend K, i dug it out for your convenience:

http://trak.in/tags/business/2010/06/01/indians-most-happiest/

it says Indians are a happy bunch, #4 or something. Elsewhere, i found 82% of Indians are satisfied with their sex lives. Now if that's not happiness, what is?😆

note that the link i posted is from folks who work on social issues. As K himself states, his report is from economists, statisticians, neuroscientists. I have a great deal of respect for the neuroscientists (given that someone close to me is a neurosurgeon in ski accident country reno😊) but economists? I mean aren't they always wrong? Opinionated yes. Right, no.

hope this helps you guys advance whatever points you were making.😊
