Is Coloner Abyankar a real leader?

Asking because in the precap I heard colonel telling Aakash that they are on a rescue mission which can also be called suicide mission and how can he take Anjali for that.
Is that how a leader behaves. Yes maybe Colonel sees Anjali like his daughter and cannot see any harm coming to her. But does that mean risk the life of another young man who is also a son to someone else.
And by his care of Anjali is Colonel forgetting what he is exactly trying to do. Rescue mission. Lives of people who are trapped somewhere between camp 3 and camp 4. Rescue Mission should not look at personal considerations, it has to look at the capability and take decision. Who in the team can ensure success to the rescue mission. Who in the team can ensure the trapped people are bought back safely.
In clear terms even colonel knows Anjali is capable than Aakash. But his selfishness of ensuring her safety, he is risking the life of a less qualified climber as well as the people trapped there. For one person lives of atleast 4 to 5 are comprmised.
Khanna already tells Abhayankar didn't allow him to summit though he was ready to take the chance. So samething happening with Anjali also. She is willing to risk life for rescue mission but he is not allowing her.
So where is the leadership there. Do post your comments on colonel's leadership quality.

TO me he is a capable leader Shruti.
Lets not blame him for his decision. Both Akash and Anjali are fresh pass outs .so more or less they are equals. We are biased because we know their stories. Anjali's father doesn't find her a worthy daughter while Akash is suffering from Acrophobia. At the end of the day both are equally qualified for the job.

To certain extent the question is about gender equality. Sorry, this gender equality is only on paper in India.

our mindset is fixed on the spot where ladies are to be given the first preference of being safe and of course mard ko dard nahi hota and men don't cry ideology adds to it . In any crisis women and children are given first preference.

Apart from this logic Akash to me is a better option. Firstly, Anjali doesn't think logically. That was proved during her course where she chooses to help her rival team member which actually made her lose the game. Secondly, we have Anjali's father here who was concerned about her safety while Akash is on his own. Thirdly, Aakash was hired by Roongta to capture all the possible moments of the star mountaineer. He is a paid person here. Fourthly, Anjali cannot afford to die now for to her Everest is her ultimate goal. So, he wants to keep her safe.

Colonel didn't choose her because things could do without her.

Agreed

Its ok for aakash to risk his life and die?..

but anjali should be safe...why this discrimination?

according to colonel, anjali's life is more valuable than aakash's life? nonsense...

Colonel is not a capable leader in this case. He looked at the choice emotionally and not logically.
According to his old-fashioned chivalry or chauvinism (whichever way we look at it), Anjali is not fit to carry supplies or heavy load so she had to stay back.

Akash being a guy is supposed to be stronger so he can carry supplies and climb and hence he was chosen instead.
If thats the case then how did Anjali carry rucksack, ropes, gear and mat on NIM field trips? That didnt slow her down.

Colonel knows Anjali is a better climber, she got the best student award at NIM. Then why does he think shes not fit to go?

Theyre going on a rescue mission.
Anjali was the one who had stopped to rescue the Black Horses team member when he was left behind by his team
. Anjali has the humanity and capability to join the rescue team. Taking one more person along would have made no difference to the rescue mission. Akash and Anjali could both go as it would mean more supplies for the mission.

Unfortunately Colonel also showed the same gender bias as Rawat...maybe his aim was to protect Anjali but the sentiment and attitude is still similar to Rawat's. That a girl is not as good as a guy, even if she has proved herself better!

Though aakash and anjali are freshers, Anjali I feel has an edge over Aakash who has Acrophobia, atleast on paper. Thats why anjali reacted like that, and was disappointed, and said it was wrong to chose him over her. But colonel said its all perception of what is right or wrong. I have a feeling that Colonel knows about akash's phobia and wants to give him an oppurtunity to deal with his problem , before the actual mission starts! And Anjali being already good, he did not unnecesarily exhaust her by including her in the rescue team...

I agree with you that Anjali was not required in this mission, And I dont think he did it because of her Gender... all his claims about Anjali stand defeated then.. we will only know if he is right or wrong in the coming days.

Ok lets compare

anjali:

she is best student of NIM...has no experience...but has humanity
can climb better than aakash...but is a girl

aakash:

is a guy...has more strength...can be useful in carrying people if needed...has fear of heights but col doesnt know that...has humanity too...even he doesnt have experience...

See bugsbunny Anjali cannot carry people is it a perception because she is a girl. Again gender is coming in this case.
Also agree to dey point on woman and safety. Woman has to be protected first. Again gender playing.
So in effect a subtle prejudice is there because of gender and is such bias excepted out of a leader than colonel is supposed to be.
As a professional I very well know the subtle biases that many managers do. Has been on the receiving end of the same as well.
But such people might be good, but they don't deserve to be great.

@ Pallavi : Anjali was the one who had stopped to rescue the Black Horses team member when he was left behind by his team

Akash also helped the Black Horses leader ( forgot his name ). Both one -one in this matter.

@ bright star :Anjali always had edge over Akash ? I would actually doubt that because Akash although freezed during the exercise but he was nevertheless the highest climber that day. Anjali is a good team leader but on quality Akash or Anjali both are more or less the same. As COlonel commented two best mountaineers from NIM. Their final marks must be close to each other.

Besides, Anjali had one dream to fulfill, Akash was made to do that all so as to save his house and Shikha maa and yet he did pretty good there. We need to count that.

The choice would have been okay if there were more people from the team who were left behind. She was left there alone like a nobody and that's what made the whole difference.

First of all I fail to understand how a rescue mission is possible. If it was possible why Nepal authorities don't have any option for that ?
I know from moral point of view its a great thing, is it applicable practically ? I mean during Uttarakhand flood disaster people saw people dying before their eyes. Some dead bodies were never recovered because it meant risking few other lives.

@ Shruti : Yes, they don't need to be great for us. We didn't ask for reservation for bus seats. WHy can't we have reservation for old people instead? Just imagine I am to sit because I am a girl while an old man stands there because he is not a woman. Who deserves to sit ? We ask what is rightfully ours and don't beg for it. Frankly, I felt bad for Anjali. She was left out like a no body. Had there more people who were left behind the case would have been different.

The two best mountaineering students who won best student awards were Anjali and Siraj, not Akash.

Akash and Anjali both helped other team's members but Anjali was the team leader and she showed leadership qualities, for which she won best student award.

Anjali wanted to summit Everest for her father's sake, Akash did it to save Shikha Maa's life. Both initially ventured for the sake of others.

Colonel could have taken both Akash and Anjali, the more people, the more hands to carry supplies but he left out only Anjali. That was really unfair!

Clearly shows his gender bias, no matter whether for protection or rejection of Anjali as a girl.
