Present
In The Arena
A small smile appeared on Jodha's face as she reminisced that engaging duel. She had lost more than the match that day.
"Jodha"
Haan... The dreamy queen was rudely brought back to the present by the ever faithful Moti.
She glanced back towards where Jalal had been fighting. The changed scene wasn't really pleasing to the eye. That vile Benazir had found her way to the arena too; in her clothes. Well, Jodha knew the bandhi couldn't muster the courage to wear Jodha's clothes without her permission. Shehenshah would have asked her to wear what I wear while I practice sword fighting. Her eyes met his. The earlier calmness had vanished, now replaced with anger. The wrath of rejection. Something Jodha had never faced before. Fear of loss. Something Jodha had never felt before.
XXX
Jalal meanwhile had been observing Jodha for a while now. She was back from the temple. But she had stopped here, in the arena, gazing at him as if he were a beautiful rose garden. Well, he was well pleased though thoroughly confused. His opponent had lost when he heard the guards stopping someone. He turned to find Benazir seeking him.
Gesturing them to let her in, he plastered a mesmerized smile on his face. "Adaap , Shehenshah. I must say, I am thoroughly impressed with your Shamsheerbazi. How powerful and enigmatic you look when you fight."
Jalal again peeked a glance at his queen who was by now lost in her own world. Willing his attention back to the lady standing beside him, he said, "Are you interested in sword fighting? Would you like to practice with me?" He chanced while whirling his sword at Benazir.
"Oh. That would be an honour, Shehenshah. Par iss nacheez ko Shamsheer ki koi zaroorat nahi. Katl karne ke liye humari aankhen hi kaafi hain. But, I do not have the audacity to defy you, my lord. I don't have the appropriate attire to practice."
"True. Your eyes indeed have the power to reach the soul." He summoned a bandhi, "Inhe who libaas do jo Jodha Begum pehenkar riyaaz karti hain."
XXX
Soon, she was back. Jalal was pondering over how he could wipe that smile off Jodha's face. Why would she be smiling now? Magnanimous, are we? Well. Two could play the game. He agreed to teach Benazir. Somehow, the self-confident Jodha feared the loss of her position too, Jalal had deduced by then.
"I will teach you." Saying, he wrapped his arms around Benazir's from behind and showed her the basic moves with the sword.
Jodha was livid. Oh, if looks could kill. She had lost all her initial interest to give Shehenshah prasad. Jalal coochie cooing with that vile Benazir was the last thing she wanted to see. Firstly, he insulted her by revoking the punishment she had given, now, he gave her her clothes. Tomorrow, he would give away her position too. She assumed.
Jalal's sneered seeing his beloved queen stomp away in rage. "I must take my leave now, Mohtarma."
Benazir looked around to find Jodha leaving and wondered. What is it with this man? No man can take his eyes off me, and Jalal can never even look at me fully. "I think you are a little too smitten by Jodha Begum, I pardon."
"Not at all... I must leave now."
A Little Later
Jodha's Chambers
"Moti, tell me something, how do you find this Benazir?" Jodha asked her friend as the latter brushed her flowing tresses. "From what I heard in the market, people find her extremely attractive. That Durga who sells pots next to the temple, was telling me, people have started selling potions that supposedly endow her beauty to whoever uses it."
"Is it?" Jodha remarked. "But then I told her, our Jodha, is so beautiful and has such a golden heart, you don't need any potion or herb."
The praise brought a smile on the queen's face. Beauty does wane away though, Moti. I was mistaken I guess. She didn't voice her thoughts aloud.
"Maybe, you should try talking to Shehenshah." advised Moti.
The Next Day Morning
In The Outer Courtyard
Little Rahim was found innocuously dragging his beloved Choti Ammijaan in a tearing yet cute hurry.
"Are Rahim, where are you taking me? Look, I have such a beautiful shawl in my hand. What if it falls and gets soiled?" panted Jodha.
"It is okay, Choti Ammijaan. You can ask Shehenshah to buy a new one for you. But right now, this is more important."
Rahim, do you know my Bapusa, specially had it sent from Amer for the cold here." poor Jodha argued.
"Okay, we are here." Rahim finally paused near the couch where Jalal was poised.
Jalal turned to find Rahim with Jodha. Jodha found herself embarrassed in front of Jalal after a long time. I must try making amends, she decided. Maybe it isn't what it seems.
"Assalaam Waleikum, Shehenshah." "Waleikum Assalaam, Khan-e-Khana. Why did you summon here today on so short a notice?"
"Pranam Shehenshah." acknowledging the greeting with an Adaap, he asked Rahim. He loved his Khan Baba's son as his own. Having no children of his own, he adored the little boy and was pleased that Jodha could share strike a chord with him.
"Well, I want to fly kites today and both of you are going to teach me. It is so long you haven't played with me. Come, let us go play." Rahim tugged at Jalal's sleeve. Jalal, though, felt really lazy, and wanted to lay on the couch for a while longer. "Not today, Rahim... I am really tired." He playfully whined.
"And Rahim, today you have to go finish your lessons with Salima Begum right? She must be looking for you. Shehenshah wants to rest for a while and I am not feeling too well, either. I promise we will play some other time." Jodha concurred.
Just then, a bandhi interrupted the enchanting banter. "I beg your pardon, Shehenshah, Salima Begum is looking for Rahim."
"See? I told you she is looking for you." added Jodha.
"Oh, no. She is always looking for me." Rahim complained but reluctantly agreed to leave. Jodha and Jalal laughed at the mother-son duo. Bidding the King and Queen goodbye, Rahim left to finish his BORING lessons.
"Waise, Are you ill? You seem so." Jodha asked Jalal trying to have a chat with him after a long, long time. She was heeding Moti's advice and taking it slow.
"No, not really. I guess it must be the cold." said Jalal carelessly. He still hadn't completely forgiven her for rejecting him. His patience had finally worn out.
"Do you see this shawl? Bapusa sent it from Amer. How do you find it?" Jodha showed him the shawl so as to pick his brain.
"Mashallah! This is quite soft and velvety. Must be of an excellent quality." Jalal said, feeling the cushiony piece of fabric with his fingers.
"Do you like it? Then why don't you keep it?" Excitedly Jodha draped the shawl around Jalal's broad shoulders.
"Actually, I have been thinking... I was going to buy a shawl for BENAZIR, you know. It has become so cold now.. I thought, I would order one for her to protect her smooth, silky skin from any harm. But, you quite thoughtfully, gifted this shawl to me." Jalal teased without looking at her. He knew the exact expressions her face would exhibit, while still feeling the shawl. Hearing her sharp intake of breath, he looked up to be precisely correct. Her calm, chirpy countenance had changed within seconds on hearing Benazir's name and he liked it. He was going to give her back in the same coin.
He continued, taking the jealousy a notch up, "I think I will gift her this beautiful shawl. She would really appreciate it. I hope you don't mind. By the way, thanks for this gift. It would make Benazir really happy." Jalal was having a mental victory dance when he said those words. Jodha's mien was utterly gratifying.
She was burning in envy and anger but frankly, Jalal was still besotted by his doe-eyed queen. Whatever said and done. Even now, she looked so delightful when angry, that Jalal would have happily taken her in his arms. Sadly that was not the case. He sighed albeit mentally.
Controlling herself, Jodha said, "As you wish Shehenshah. I must leave now. It is time for my puja." With that the queen huffed away mentally cursing Moti for having given her this idea in the first place.
