Disclaimer: I am neither a fan of Ruqaiyya nor against her. She is a very important part of the narrative and an integral part of the puzzle that is the Jalal-Jodha relationship. I have tried to avoid comparisons with Jodha or references to Jodha deliberately. This is exclusively about Begum-e-Khas Ruqaiyya Sultan Begum. Please keep this in mind while posting comments.
When I was watching yesterday's episode, I felt how delusional Ruqaiyya is getting day-by-day. Her statement (after SB leaves her company) that Jalal has no "dil" left me undecided whether to laugh or cry. She still seems to believe that Jalal, who is searching high and low for Jodha personally, with just a few soldiers for his security and to take care of his comfort, has merely gone to bring back Jodha for the sake of the Mughal Sultanat's prestige and for the sake of the grief-stricken HB. She seems to still live in denial about the "mohabbat" between Jalal and Jodha. In an earlier episode, when she had gone to feed HB (who seemed to have lost her appetite in her grief), I had briefly felt that her redemption track had started and she was in the process of changing for the better. But the very next instant, she clarified to SB that her feelings for Jodha remained unchanged.

In the whole of Agra, apart from Jalal and Jodha themselves, the only person who is in denial about their love seems to be Ruqaiyya. Why should an, otherwise, intelligent woman fail to see the writing on the wall? Why is she unable to see the drastic changes in Jalal, his very obvious obsession for all things related to Jodha and his increasing distance from her? Why is she unable to see the subtle but dramatic turnaround in Jodha's attitude and behaviour towards Jalal? Does she seriously believe the "nothing but dost" theory put forward by Jalal and Jodha?
  • She was the first person to whom Jalal confessed his love for Jodha (though he later laughed it off).
  • She was the first person to whom Jalal confessed his friendship with Jodha.
  • When Ruqaiyya was pregnant, Jalal allowed Jodha to give her kesar milk.
  • In the false pregnancy track, he was willing to lie to Ruqaiyya that the child was his and that he had a relationship with Jodha. He was even willing to forgo his friendship with Ruqaiyya.
  • In the Tasneem track, he accepted Jodha on par with Ruqaiyya for the first time and later was ready to even divorce her to support the law against child marriage.
  • When Ben carried away Ruqaiyya as a hostage, he let Atga bring Ruqaiyya back while he stayed near Jodha.
My view is that in her heart of hearts, she knows the truth but does not want to face it.

Ruqaiyya has spent the better part of her life with Jalal and knows no other family or friends apart from him. Yet he has never offered her anything more than (a deep and abiding) friendship. He is ready to indulge her, forgive her little trespasses, play games with her or even discuss politics with her. He is ready to make her the "Mallika of Hindustan" and the "Begum-e-Khas" of the harem. There is only one thing he is not willing to share with her and that is his heart. She, on her part, is loyal to him, in return for exclusive and undivided attention from him.

There is only one thing she is not willing to share and that is Jalal. She both controls him and is dependent on him. She cannot accept another woman, an outsider in all respects, walk into her husband's life and heart, mind and soul. She cannot accept that a heart that had all these years been inert should suddenly start floating on Jalal's sleeve, and that too for someone else. Her insecurity with regard to Jodha speaks volumes for her own changed feelings.

She took Jalal for granted all these days and never made any efforts to take their relationship to the next level, mentally, emotionally, psychologically. She wasn't even equipped to do this. For instance, when Jalal lost Bairam Khan, she simply didn't know how to console him or even that she needed to console him. And even after perceiving a threat to her place in Jalal's life from Jodha, she has not changed at all. She still believes that she can control Jalal as before and that he will always be hers alone.

It might be better to say that she has changed for the worse since Jalal's marriage with Jodha.
  • In the Moti-AK case, she was willing to watch the fun while a drunk AK chased Moti through the harem.
  • She had the temerity to tell Jodha that Jalal would dump her after spending one night with her.
  • In the Benazir track, she publicly humiliated Jodha several times and even attempted to throw her out of her hojra and spite her by forcing Jalal to marry a kaneez. This after Jodha had saved her marriage in the past.
  • The Ruqaiyya insecurity track showed the depths to which a queen could sink to retain her audha and her control over her husband.
What she fails to realize is that she is herself pushing Jalal towards Jodha through her behaviour.

This is really sad because in the early part of the show, Ruqaiyya had come across as someone who was very regal and graceful, haughty but not rude. She is beautiful, intelligent, talented, with a deep sense of justice. She was someone Jalal wanted to spend all his time with, while in Agra. She had so much potential to be a legendary queen on the basis of the sheer force of her personality and the goodness of her nature. But she chose to become legendary on the basis of her audha and political ambitions.

Maybe, if she had been guided properly by HB and Gulbadan Begum in her childhood, she might have been better grounded and less vulnerable to manipulation by MA.

Let me end this post with a few scenes that are among my Ruqaiyya favourites.

1. The earliest Ruqaiyya interactions with Jalal when Ruqaiyya was played by Smiley. One particular scene is when she is scolded by Jalal for almost getting someone killed and he asks her to leave the DEK. She leaves in a majestic manner, head held high, doing sajda all the way out, till she is out of his sight.
2. Every time Ruqaiyya shows her sense of justice, even where Jodha is concerned. Whether her support for Jodha in the miscarriage track or later in the false pregnancy case when she slaps Hoshiyar for daring to suggest killing the child in Jodha's womb.
3. The letter Ruqaiyya writes to Humayun when Jalal is about to divorce her shows how emotionally dependent she is on Jalal.
4. When Jalal confesses that he sees Jodha also as a friend, she asks in a heart-wrenching manner whether his new friend will replace her.
5. I hated Ruqaiyya landing in the middle of the Kajri-Badal track. But now when I look back, I can only see her love for Jalal that made her shun the comforts she is used to and undertake an arduous journey. (Some may view this as her insecurity, but insecurity is present where love is present. And yes, Jodha fans, Jodha also undertook the arduous journey especially in her delicate health condition, but this is not about Jodha. 😊)

Ruqaiyya is at a crossroads in her life. One way leads to a state of happy coexistence with Jodha and the other way leads to an isolated but still auda-driven lifestyle. Let's see which way she chooses in the show.

good post👍🏼
i agree dat had HB nd Gulbadan begum grounded her in childhood nd made any deep parental/guardian bond wid her den d scenario might have been different... 2day she would have some guardian like figure in her life 2 look forward 2 for advice, consolation... when she is distressed, anguished etc. nd she would not have got manipulated by maham so easily...
HB once tried 2 subtly tell her 2 not let her insecurity get d better of her . or such (when she decided 2 interrupt in badal-kajri track)... but i guess ruks-HB didnt have such relationship dat she would have taken her words seriously...

all said nd done... personaly right now wid her behaviour she is pissing me off very badly🥱.. . so i wont comment on dat topic😊

i guess she is going 2 turn almost black in d show now... only when maham revelation takes place, will she start introspecting herself... when it will be revealed 2 her dat mahamanga was d woman responsible 4 her mc den ony will she realise dat she played into d hands of d woman who was truly her worst enemy... den she might not love jo or such but she could go back 2 her gray character( which i really liked when played by smilie)... i dread dat by d time she comes 2 peace with ja-jo relationship or even hers wid jalal , den it might be too late 4 her...

PS- she is really at d crossroads... but i guess she is starting 2 head 2wards d isolated audha driven lifestyle.😔 clutching d helping hands of our dear😡 ma...
(as in history too i read somewhere dat akbar was not talking 2 her 4 a great deal of time... she was harem head nd all but their relationship had been embedded with rocks 4 sometime...it was only in their later stage of life did everything got cleared b/w them nd she was given khurrams responsibilty😕)

Radhika very thought provoking post.

I used to like Rukayya earlier, the various instances you have mentioned? She used to speak the blunt truth.

Now also at times the truth comes out - it is another matter she forgets what she herself said the next min 😕 - when Jalal was totally drunk and he told her he is upset with Jodha - the first sentence Rukayya said was Jodha Begum won't do anything wrong! Then later she WANTED that to be untrue and was ever willing to believe the worse about Jodha.

I always wonder - why when she has spent lifelong with HB & SB, Jiji Anga and GB does she ONLY listen to MA?
What is it in her personality that she recognizes the goodness in all of the above but still when she chooses to believe she does MA!!!

What stopped Rukayya from trying to win Jalal's love - she ALONE had his entire trust at one time, he pampered her silly, why did she not offer it to him? What made her think he would reject?!

One thing I absolutely dislike about Rukayya is she is selfish to the core, she can be the most petty person and she does not treat people with respect. She does not seem to have great affection for anybody else apart from Jalal also.

The hojara incident was absolutely the pathetic petty Rukayya.

Rukayya never seems to grow - has she for even one min thought that she also played a part in risking Jalal's life? Jalal did not want to marry Ben, Rukayya goaded him to - so she can replace Jodha from his life! Everybody who gets so agog about apologies from Jodha! Has Rukayya apologized to Jalal? He never even thought of the part Rukayya and MA played in getting him so near death, the part they played in also almost Jodha losing her life.

All that Ben said before she took Rukayya - Jalal has never thought about it even once, nor has Rukayya.

I think the only 2 times she will get a real dose of reality when she really accepts Jalal loves Jodha in all manners it is possible to love a person, it may turn her totally black cos Rukayya does not seem to have any qualms about any innocent life getting harmed (she was uncaring about Moti) and what she wants she should get.

Secondly when MA truth will come in front of her - that she let herself become such a silly pawn in the hands of a woman who did most to harm her. Will that make her take hard look at her own self?

Rukayya still sees Jalal as her chiz - something to be possessed cos her audha and BEK and haram means everything to her - and she knows all of that comes from Jalal.

Jodha has asked her once (BTW even MA said an aside once that if only you had loved Jalal more than Shehenshah) if she loves Jalal or Shehenshah?

I thing it is clear to everybody - even Jalal that Rukayya loves Shehenshah more than Jalal.

While for Jodha she loves Jalal more than Shehenshah. She loves the MAN and that is why Jalal changed for her - even though Jodha never asked him to.

Radhika I have just rambled on! BTW I read somewhere real Akbar had stopped talking with Rukayya till Salim was born - in that happiness he forgave her. So she must have done something terrible to cause him to do this.

Someone had pointed out that she had very pure bloodline and was very important politically and her audha and BEK all always remained intact due to her political clout.

Great post Radhika 👏👏

Especially the last line about the crossroads in life she is facing now. The talwars in Jalal's life have to learn to live with each other. And make sure they don't cut him 😉

For me , she was always a bit disillusioned. For example, even in Smiley avtaar, she underestimated MA's intelligence and her power over Jalal. Also naively challenged her to a win the next time they crossed paths. For someone who has been in Jalal's life for so long, didn't she know the kind of blind faith and control Jalal had over MA? Even Bairam Khan was wary of her.

She thought if she knew about AK's crime of entering the harem, then she could use this to wield authority over MA. These were some incidents that made me really doubt her intelligence.

See a similarity here? MA is another woman who has great control over Jalal's mind and emotions. And Ruqaiya tried to belittle her on many occasions by calling her a bandhi. She has an aversion to every person who influences Jalal. She had also become petty with Salima when Jalal took her advice in fake prego case.

The problem is, she just wants her alone in Jalal's life. Nobody else and no one else to influence or control him. No one else he should spend his time with. Even when Jalal's navratans come to occupy a greater part on Jalal's life, she will respond in this way only. She would then share the best friend tag too.

She is a tragic figure. Doomed to an inevitable fall, if she continues this way.

Thought provoking post.
I am still trying to understand her behavior ( reel Rukaiya )
1. An insecure young girl who is unable to deal with this new crisis in life. For now, denial is comforting. Subconciously, she chooses to be an ostrich OR
2. A pretentious , self centered and pampered queen who refuses to accept the reality. She sees it as her defeat and not a change that all humans have to go through and accept( willingly or unwillingly). To her, the thought of not having complete control on her man and destinity is just unacceptable. OR
3. Someone with an undiagnosed psychiatric condition or a psychiatric presentation of an underlying medical condition( this is not sarcasm). An era when advances in medical science were impressive but nothing compared to modern medicine...During the Ben track, I did some research on Yunani and Ayurvedic medicine during Mughal times while trying to understand the scientific explainations ( if any ) behind vishkanyas, rapid acting ' leps' and 'kaada' and possibility of Akbar being dyslexic. Come upon interesting information but did not find much on psychiatric disorders. . Can this be explained as a milder version of ' delusion of grandeur' or a side effect of some form of chronic substance abuse? not sure what CVs have in store for us...I'll put my money on number 2 as a possible explaination by the serial makers.

Radhika, thanks for making this post. Will post more later. 😊

A thought provoking post.!!!.
Will keep it short, and will "TRY" to be in accordance with the Disclaimer, put up in the post. 😉

Probably, it's been tried here in this post(or, i feel so) to cast the Change in Ruqayya Begum, and asked us how she will do in future. I view her in two phases - Pre JJ marriage and Post JJ marriage. She DID NOT change overnight but took some time. She is good to HB, GB, and "to an extent" to BB also. (Though, she did NOT do anything to remove Dilawar Khan from BB's hojra, until MA gave the order. She was shocked for a second, but was pacified the moment MA blurted her wicked plan to defame "Jodha".) I would attribute these changes in her NOT ONLY due to the "INSECURITY", BUT ALSO due to the reason that she Ceased to "EvOLvE". If Beagle was instrumental in leading to the Darwinism, then here Ruqaiya's inability to tackle the "evolution" in Jalal and to Evolve herself, is the mirror view of why she is - what she is at present, i mean 'insecure.?. or unassertive.?.'.!!.

She is at times uncertain(remote control is MA.!!.) and lacks confidence in discovering and feeling her own value(.?.!.?.!.), and one or more of her capabilities, lacks trust in herself and NOW even in Jalal .!!. As you said, deep in her heart of hearts, she knows that "truth" about Jalal but she refuses to acknowledge it as she fears that the present 'gala' time will last for a few days only. And when she faces reality, then will feel let down and cause them agony, by going the wrong way in the future,(For Sure.!.) as this is a normal personality attribute, and this only differs in magnitude from person to person depending on the LEVEL of insecurity and the degree upto which they can manipulate their fears from overtaking their inner conscience, and here Ruqayya seems very weak. The fact "IS" that she is emotionally vulnerable MAJORLY with regard to Jalal (of course her Auhda as well.😉), and if she feels hurt due to anyone, she WilL RETURN back with more demonstrative and vocal expressions(no matter how extreme), clearly point that her insecurity is nothing BUT a difference in her level of awareness, regarding Jalal.(though she says she understands HIM.!!.)

Jalal has changed a lot but the same SHOULD also have occured with Ruqayya also. But, as she remains in her OWN world of "Bachpan Ki Dosti" , this clause has categorically DEPLETED Ruqayya, and disallowed her to develop her relation with Jalal. Her diffidence, her fears, her anxiety, have taken a toll on many of her personal qualities which she HAD EARLIER, and now have disappeared. The regal-neSS in her SEEMS LOST. One can analyze this by keeping many dimensions in our mind. I won't quote any single event. Her vulnerability / instabilty / fragility / insecurity, has it's roots in her bachpan years, as per many members(though i differ a bit here), 'Coz she has BEEN Jalal's WIFE and a Queen for the last 11 years, and hence was EXPECTED to shrug off any such rickety-ness, 'Coz the yardstick one sets should not be to feel secure, but to be able to overcome insecurity(if it is PRESENT) or atleast EvolvE. And, the one who fails, for them Darwin has given the answer. 😕

Though she still has TIME which is FAST running OUT, more or less like Bolt passing through the finish line on the sprints, in the Jamaican ''Heats''.😉 She can change, and if NOT change, adjust herself, and can put a hold on her ever increasing shaky feelings and thereby that "FEAR" can be overcome. Yes, it always gonna take time, and she NeedS a good deal of patience and a slow realization that her own worth is purely a matter of her OWN interpretation, and need NOT fear "anyone😉" .It is true(in her case) that "her" insecurity follows NOT due to her own acts "BUT" from concerns relating to "others". BUT, this is by no means a necessity, but more a tendency, which ONLY she can shrug off, if she chooses to Evolve/Change/Adjust. Hoping (against hope ? ) that this happens soon.!.

PS - Hope my point is clear, but since i tried to stick to the Disclaimer and avoided any comparisons, so it appeared tricky to put up my POV. 😊 I have used some theories in this writeup, from psychology,😕 which i read while researching on Akbar and Dyslexia. Pardon me for this boring writeup.!. 😃

I am shocked 😲 Abhay, you are getting influenced by me - just look at the length of your comment - OMG!

But seriously, I love it! It's not boring at all. From Darwin to Bolt, you have touched them all. Wow!

You have been more blunt than I wanted to be but you have perfected what I would have really wanted to say. Evolution is the key to survival. Those who don't evolve...

Thanks for posting a wonderfully thought out and well written post. You have understood Ruq very well, I must say. Hats off! 👏👏👏

nice post well regarding reel rukkaiya sultan i don't hate her character
i like her sometime & sometime i don't .. i really liked her when she stoped jalal sword on her hand to stop unjustice & saved jodha , when she warned jalal about maham anga plans, when she feed HB saleema thanks her she says she cared for HB this doesn't mean she love jodha 👍🏼
i like her proud nature & straight forwardness ... but when she chanted audha malika e khaas & become puppet in maham hand she annoyed me 👎🏼
her character is still in so many layers she is combination of good & bad thats i like about her the cvs are still experimenting on her character i just hope after maham anga end they don't turn rukkaiya in maham 2
i want rukkaiya to be same proud , good & bad but not a evil like maham
