The Afghans were terrible folk. I have heard that besides Alexander, the only other invader who defeated them was Chenghiz Khan.

They destroyed a whole British army in the 19th century, and defeated the Soviets in the 20th, the latter of course with a lot if US help, but it was the Afghans who did all the fighting.

Exactly dear aunty g. Alexander praised only Afghanistanis bravery in his life. Even more than porus. Kuch to hoga afghaniyon mein...I read a book long ago about his battle in Afghanistan. It is said that Alexander was covered in blood. People fought with so much courage that Alexander chose not to stay there for even a month after the battle. While in other places he used to fight win and rest for sometime but not in Afghanistan...

I stand corrected!

This is wonderful. I watched a 95 episode serial on Maharaja Ranjit Singh, which was really good, but it flopped, so they closed it down abruptly with a voiceover, and never got to the Afghanistan part.

But I have heard of the legendary Hari Singh Nalwa.

I wonder how he defeated the Afghans. Have you read anything about it?

He not only defeated afghans but his name become terror for them...Hari Singh nalwa was very educated man with tremendous warring skills. He hired many french engineers and retired generals of French army. They trained wild Sikhs , made them punctual and educated them about team work. Which helped Sikhs to win against afghans ..

The need for tehraav, for taking time to digest what you have just swallowed, and to prevent a perennial restlessness from taking over your life.

Yes, and to drink far less than he did. Over time, alcohol abuse must have affected his judgement, besides damaging his liver and making him weak .

Totally agree. As we've discussed in this forum on the past, you can't rule an empire on horseback.

Also, for someone who's mind was his biggest weapon all that drinking undid his ability to make smart moves or avoid foolish ones.
