Loved the mallipu stories. Shyamala, I would not venture out of the house without those in my hair, we had a whole garden of different mallis - jaaji, yelu suthu malli (7 rowed), double petalled malli, the regular malli, I would string 3 strands everyday for morning, noon and evening, the mandatory puja maalai would be done by elders.

Jyothi, we call it mogginna jadde, I used to have that done too at various times of the year for festivals and my mother in law used to do it for my daughter when we visited India, pattu pavadai and all.

Ashu, yes, those kids are out to embarrass us any which they can! ;) and mine are older than yours!

On the contrary, I should thank you for giving me, along with yourself, a most welcome break from PR, which was even worse today than I had expected. It was such fun.

I loved the posts about the gajras, the photos of the mallikaipoo, and of the little girl with her plait fully bedecked with the malligai. strands. Just compare any of those pics with Purvi's measly little gajra, which looked like a famine victim and had, as bee noted, more thread than flowers!

Incidentally, for garlands of the thin jasmine, which flowers on creepers - as against the fat mallaigaipoo which flowers on plants - we used the fibre of the plaintain tree in long strands. One looped it round 3-4 flowers held as a bunch and pulled it tight but not too tight, so as not to cut thru the stalks, and then one went on to the next bunch, held as close as possible to the first one and so on and on. One interspersed the jasmine with the kanakambaram for colour.

But one could not use the fibre for the fat malligaipoo buds, as the stems would have slipped out of the loop, or been cut thru.

Today's PR was insufferable, Every single character contradicted what she or he had been saying all along.It began with Sulochana, who was all in favour of the divorce till recently, shedding tears over the prospect, and ended with Manav saying that he was giving Archana the divorce to salvage her self-respect. If ever there was an 🤣 line, that was it. And Purvi getting another postponement deserves another. What is her locus standi, pray?

Well, paani sar ke oopar ja chuka hai, and all we have to try to do is not to drown before PR is eventually cashiered. As for me, I am past caring WHAT happens to ANYONE.

Any more titbits about the malligai, anyone?

What lovely memories! I remember the overpowering scent of the jaadimalli very well.Those were the days! I cannot remember ever having seen the yezhu shuttu malligai, but it must have been quite spectacular.
