Shyamala, so right, we would use naaru to tie the long stemmed flowers but string the mallipu. Even today when we visit India, I have to get mallipu everyday, even though I get teased mercilessly.

Have not watched today's epi and like you I am losing interest, "no tempo" in the plot, alas!

Shyamala,here is a pic of the 7 sthuthu malli, the Grand Duke of Tuscany, it looks like a rose but smells heavenly like only a jasmine can.

All this is making me more and more nostalgic, reminding me of all the things I did as a child.I haven't thought about them in so long, caught up in the humdrum of every day life. Sad, but true. We used to have this huge paarijaatham tree, nandivardhanam plants, diff varieties of jasmine, hibiscus and other flowers in my grand father's big yard (he had a big house surrounded by large land) and my cousins and I would go around with him religiously with empty baskets every morning, waiting for his directions to pick up the flowers. This was a chore we did everyday, early in the morning in summer holidays. We had to pick at least 5 or 6 baskets of them for his puja everyday. He was very particular about that. Those were the days 😊.. My kids have not known any of those simple joys of life, sadly...

Jhanvi, we get star jasmine, here too. Did you know? We have it in our house, as a creeper, it flowers only a month in summer, but smells wonderful...This flower is very common in texas, for some reason..

I love the dark pink kanakaambaram too.. very pretty color.. Doesn't have a smell but looks beautiful in the kadamba maala..(the one with jasmines, kanakaambaram, and maruvam (green leaves with a nice smell))... I think that is what the mala is called..

Jyothi, we have the night jasmine and jaaji and it smells wonderful like you say, the mallipu for some reason does not seem to fare so well here :(
Sounds wonderful, helping your grandpa pick flowers, I can imagine you as a little girl (even though I have not met you!) waiting eagerly and patiently for instructions from your thatha.
My hubby makes my kids collect flowers and leaves for Ganesh puja every year, that is the extent of "flower collecting" that they know. ;)

Here are some images of jasmine - Jaaji, night jasmine, star jasmine, regular malli (if malli can ever be called regular), paarijaatham (these were only for maalai and puja, we were not allowed to "wear" it) and a bunch of other "jasmines" . We also had nandibatlu or nandivatlu and mom used to make kajal from burning the flowers, supposed to be healthy for the eyes. Now this is making me nostalgic, so much for Purvi's gajras!

Yes, Jyothi, it is called the kadmbamaalai. It was a melange and we used to buy that from the flower sellers at the temples, it was always included in the basket for the temple poojas.
