The totally unexpected good (and really good) part was Archana running verbal rings round a fuming Savita - drop shots, volleys, rallies and smashing serves - till the harridan was driven against the wall and seemed to give up at least temporarily. Since I had taken it for granted that Archana would play Patience to the hilt, I probably enjoyed what actually turned up that much more.
Then, Archana, possibly having a small stock of glycerine that had gone past the expiry date, decided to indulge in her mandatory crying stint. For the topic, she chose the awful consequences that would follow if Teju and Ovi found out that she was their mother, and this more for Sulochana than even for herself.
In PR and other soaps, doors and windows only exist so that they can be kept ajar for the mandatory eavesdropper, who can thus have life somewhat easier than with an ear pressed close to the wood or an eye to the keyhole, always afraid that the door might suddenly be opened. No prizes for guessing who is outside the door!
The Monster-in-Law thus learns that Teju has been living with Archana for 3 months but still does not know that Archana is her mother. Also, more to the point for her, that Archana is mortally afraid of facing the hostility from her daughters that she is sure will follow the revelation. From this to Thursday's dhamaka is but one step. This is what is called apne pair par khud kulhadi marna ( digging one's own grave), in which the Archanas of the world are specialists.
Oh, yes, the eagerly awaited Arjun-Purvi segment. The honours in this go to Ovi; she is undergoing an image makeover from the haughty miss who gave Archana a dressing down before the shopping expedition. She is absolutely sweet and thoughtful both to Purvi and about Arjun (I suspect that she is turning Purvi up sweet to get her to trace the anonymous caller and also keep an eye on Arjun). Purvi puts her on the speaker phone, thus giving Arjun/Rithwik a chance to display his best take on remorse and self-disgust, which he holds for a good long time as well. It is a change of sorts from the hangdog expression that has been his staple of late.
Purvi looks resolutely accusatory, glaring upwards at him. She also indulges in a savage monologue about the miseries she is going thru, disguising this as understanding and empathy for Ovi's present plight. She makes it a point to do all this, including an emphatic statement that she has never loved anyone, standing a foot away from Arjun, thus making sure that he does not escape anything.
There was nothing new, nothing that Purvi has not already said many times before, and I for one found it - both the words and her expressions, repetitive and much of a muchness. If these are the Arjun-Purvi scenes that are to be thrown at us like bones to a puppy, I would rather do without them. Their scenes have, for 2-3 weeks now, being each like a bad carbon copy of the previous one, and there is nothing to rejoice over when yet another fuzzy carbon copy turns up. I am sure many of you will not agree, but I am not going to dance a jig to celebrate this one.
A really wicked character always makes for compelling viewing, and Punni walked off with the acting honours today.
The hard angular planes of her face add to the impact as she drips venom like a hissing snake. She does not turn a hair as she declares, with obvious relish, that it was she who had made and circulated the MMS and made the anonymous phone call. One gets the distinct impression that she is delighted to have this unexpected opportunity to boast about her cleverness, and Purvi's shocked and unbelieving expression must have been icing on the cake for her. No wonder she adds, contemptuously, that she could never understand what Arjun Sir saw in such a "dumb girl".
The scene ends with Purvi acutely conscious of being between a rock and a hard place, and her retort that she will tell all to Ovi and the others rings hollow. Punni flaunts the MMS warningly, and also threatens to tell Archana. This is Purvi's Achilles heel; she knows that she cannot risk breaking her mother's heart with these revelations. Punni does not fail to twist the knife in hard by saying that her affair had at least been with an outsider, whereas Purvi was doing the same thing with her own sister's fiance. Purvi listens in speechless horror and despair. One can understand why she neither explains nor rebuts any of this; it would have had NO effect at all.
In the precap, Punni offers a quid pro quo: Purvi should not expose her role in the MMS affair and the anonymous call, and she would keep mum about Purvi's 'affair'with Arjun.
I do not think Purvi will tell anything to anyone - either Archana or Arjun. She will keep quiet for the present, and so, most reluctantly, will Punni, for if there is a showdown, Purvi has cast iron technical proof that the anonymous call was made from Punni's place. It is rather like a Mexican standoff -with each of them with a (metaphorical)gun to the other's head, trying to make sure she does not blink first. Clint Eastwood would have loved this!
