Dear Janhvi,

Do you remember that medieval fad, of trying to figure out how many angels could dance on the head of a pin? It was a serious theological debate in those days and even much later; Dumas has Aramis refer to it in Twenty Years Later. Well, what we are all doing with PR, as regards the minutest details of actions, motives, probabilites, is something similar.

Besides this, we are always clinging to some one character, hoping against hope that he/she comes out looking good, or at least passable . The latest candidate for this exercise is Teju. Almost invariably, we are badly let down by what actually happens. I had hopes of Teju turning up trumps as well, but now I feel it will drag on. 18 years of relentless conditioning of her mind by Savita is not going to be overcome by 3 months of love and kindness from Archana, Sulochana and Purvi.

This is where it was extremely important for Archana to handle the inevitable revelation, of her being the twins' aai, on her own territory, at a time and in a manner of her choosing. Yesterday, she should have taken the two to Sulochana's place, which is where Teju would have gone in any case, sat them down, and explained the whole to them in a credible and convincing way. Instead, she fights on the enemy's territory - the worst of all options - and also seems to have had no plan of action at all. The result was a foregone conclusion.

Things will get only worse all round, and not just with Teju, when the Arjun-Purvi link up is exposed one way or another. We will all then expect Arjun to put up a stout defence of Purvi, and he will.

But it will not help Purvi at all, for the standard comment will be that she is a golddigger like her mother, and that she has bewitched Arjun and led him astray - "uspe kaala jadoo kar diya, hai hamara bechara Arjun beta!" And the more he protests that it was he who took the initiative and it was no fault of Purvi's, the more this argument will be bandied about.

Archana's pathetic mishandling of yesterday's encounter is going to queer the pitch for Arjun-Purvi in more ways than one.

Abhi, you are too kind, at least in regards to me.😊

Bee, in answer to one of your posts (I have yet to learn the easy way to copy paste multiple posts from my phone to respond to all of them on one post like you do so efficiently!), I would prefer Purvi to walk away from Arjun with head held high and dignity intact given the present impasse with him, unfortunately that is not how the CVs will play it! 😔
Shyamala, a PhD thesis and whatever else may come after😃, we have become so attuned to seeing nuances and catching hidden meanings, when perhaps none are intended or exist, that we infuse life and feeling into these characters so much so that they seem like every day friends or acquaintances whose sorry lives we see unfolding before us and feel an urgent need to rectify their mistakes before it is too late to turn back the clock. Alas, the clock and the control is in the hands of Ekta Mata and all our anguished entreaties and fervent pleas continue to fall on deaf ears until her Majesty so pleases to change the tides in our favor.

Shyamala, being on one's own turf gives one the home court advantage, cardinal rule in verbal combat if not in sport but Archana is foolish, always has been and always will be, to expect anything different from her would be a mistake.

Dumas, ah, that evokes memories of The Three Musketeers, my two best friends and I were called that all through college! That aside, the pin head allusion could be even more apt than you intended. The original reference was, I believe, to the extent of the heavens, against which the circumference of the earth was merely the size of a point, the magnitude of the celestial sphere in a sense was mammoth in comparison to a mere nothing. Similarly, this soap over which we all pore over with such earnestness and dissect it like there is no tomorrow is miniscule in comparison to the real world out there! Just my bit of morning philosophy! I do not remember Aramis making an allusion to it, will have to jog my memory on that, a good exercise for the weekend in the absence of PR episodes.

PS: For an instant yesterday I did allow myself to chastise Teju by thinking "you are your Savita aaji's granddaughter after all, low blows should be your forte" but hope springs eternal and as you rightly point out in the absence of anyone else to pin (there is that dratted pin again!) them on, the only likely candidate is Tej. Hope she comes through with flying colors!

Dear Abhi,

What can I say but 😳😳😳😳😳! I do hope that means what I wanted it to mean(if so, thanks again, bee)!

Now as for the angels dancing on the head of a pin, that was a puzzle that people in Christendom, especially men of religion like monks and priests, used to argue over in the Middle Ages, and right up of the 17th century.

You can look it up on Wiki at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_many_angels_can_dance_on_the_head_of_a_pin%3F, and there is a very neat article that is even better, at http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/1008/did-medieval-scholars-argue-over-how-many-angels-could-dance-on-the-head-of-a-pin.

In fact, I have goofed up slightly, it is not "on the head of a pin" but " on the point of a needle". Do look these 2 pieces up, they are quite interesting.

You know , Abhi, one can easily sound impressive and knowledgeable when one is on familiar ground, as here in literature, and of course Janhvi even more than me, for she had studied it properly, whereas I am only a desultory soul wandering around picking up beautiful shells on the beach while the whole ocean of language and poetry lies before me!

Now, if one were to ask me to study a balance sheet, or to comment on cost accounting or on other matters financial, I would be all at sea, whereas you would be right in your element, and Ashu as well. So you see, it is all a matter of the terrain!

This said, do look up the angels part. As for kala jadoo, that is exactly what Savita, Teju and Ovi would say as and when they find out about Arjun and Purvi. It is always the girl at fault, and NOT their precious male of the species.

Dear Abhi, the reference simply put alludes to a pointless argument. The medievals are purported to have argued over how many ethereal bodies could fit on the point of a needle. Useless waste of time but what is even more ridiculous is that a bunch of later historians and theologians spent time writing dissertations on whether medieval monks could have been so silly as to contemplate such nonsense even. Their inference was that the original reference to angels dancing was to glorify the extents of the heavens, the earth is a mere point in the grand scheme of things. All is hypothesis, what remains is that it is a frivolous pastime and this is what it has come to mean in terms of current usage.

Shyamala, gathering of shells is anytime to be preferred over hoarding of useless information.😉 When you venture into subjects out of sheer love, you can joyfully separate the grain from the chaff, not so if you are forced to examine both with equal dedication.

Dear Shyamala and Janhvi,

Many thanx for the clarifications...how very very interesting...Janhvi last couple of lines elaborate well on Shyamala's beach collecting and adding to her treasures...and how well u put it...

Thank u to both of you...will read the articles u referred to Shyamala...tomorrow...as I head to bed with thoughts of implications of Greece elections, Spain bailout of banks, and Moody's downgrades of my US banks...and what it will all do to spreads and prices of our bonds in our portfolio...and I don't know which way the markets turn tomorrow here in the US! And again my portfolio manager will be ruminating the risk off trade...

Dear Abhi,

That is the ticket! What did I tell you? It is all a matter of the ground you are on. See how easy it was to put me (and probably Janhvi as well ) in my place!

Warm regards.

Shyamala

Dear Abhi, we are back full circle to Shyamala's reference - how many angels can really dance on the point of a needle? Lol! This PR business, ARVI and their ludicrousness keep our minds away at least temporarily from daily stressors. Have a great night and hope the markets take an upturn tomorrow!
