Chapter One: Akela Chodke
Everything was over.
Finished.
Raavi never felt this alone and heartbroken in her life, this was not supposed to happen, yet it did. And her life was completely pointless now. She was so blank, so distorted that no tears, no words, nothing could bring her back her life. She always had one dream since she was five when she would see Dev, with his cute family. She dreamt to be Dev's wife, live forever as a Pandya, be a part of that beautiful family and that was it.
It was all she wanted.
Was it too much to ask though? And then she was in this bubble, this weird bubble that Dev loved her too, which she mistook his nature for. She could not see past her illusion which she had woven since childhood, and it came crashing down when Dev broke their wedding and married Rishita, the woman he loved.
Good for him, Raavi was happy, why would she not be? She truly loved Dev and if he was happy, then she was.
So what if it was not her.
The entire wedding was a blur, when Raavi stepped down from the mandap. Everything happened really fast, Dev got married to Rishita, the Pandya family with long faces left with the newly married couple and here she was, all alone. Her massi, her massa, cousin, family and relatives all surrounded her, sympathised with her, cried for her but she was standing like a pillar. Not even a single tear fell from her eyes.
Somehow she escaped the sorrowful state at her house and sat on the high wall on a hill, in her bridal avatar. There was a deep lake past the wall and Raavi knew that if she fell, she would instantly die by the height and if not then would drown for sure. But right now, just as dead the night was, Raavi was too. This was not living, this was slow death to her. Her mind somehow thought what Dev and his wife must be doing and that thought made her shudder, shaking her head, and she gulped.
Her hands tightened against the stony wall, maybe if she jumped, this would all stop. Maybe it would be better to go take a dip in the cold lake, or make her mind stop from imagining all these stupid scenes. Maybe her family would be spared from humiliation of yet another daughter not being unmarried right before the altar. Pandya family would not be celebrating with their new bahu, forgetting her, and Raavi felt the pang in her heart return when she imagined a laughing Shiva.
He hated her since day 1.
Shiva never wanted her to enter his house, and he was always against the wedding with Dev, and he probably would be the most happiest right now. Sighing, Raavi shut her eyes, the bridal dress was already heavy with all the jewellery and overdo, but her heart was heavier with the heartbreak and the betrayal. She took a deep breath, looking down at the black lake, and gulped.
It would be easier once she was gone.
"I would not do that if I were you."
Raavi came to her senses before she had done the deed and snapped out of it, not realising how deeply she was breathing. Panting, she relaxed, thankful she had not taken the drastic step out of misery and looked at her saviour, but her jaw clenched when she saw her arch-nemesis stand close by.
Shiva was still dressed in the wedding sherwani he had worn for the wedding, meeting Raavi's eyes with a grim smile.
He wanted to taunt her, hurt her more, Raavi thought, looking ahead, "chala jaa, Shiva." She managed to say, the first words from her mouth after the evening's happenings. "Please, chala jaa. Na mujh mein aaj ladne ki taakat hai aur na tere paas mere liye time. Toh please..."
"Sun, ye jagah tere baap ki hai?" Rowdy Shiva spoke aloud, "ya ye seat pe sirf teri tashrif baith sakti hai aisa koi rule hai?"
Huffing at his words, Raavi shut her eyes. She really had no strength to fight with him but it seemed like Shiva was not done, because he sat next to her, and like her, kept his feet dangling in the air. There was still an arm's distance between them and Raavi still felt the grief, the pain now increasing.
"Ye dulhan banke kaha bhatak rahi thi?" Shiva asked, breaking the silence, "sundar lagti hai toh kya pehen ke baitegi?"
Raavi ignored him, blankly looking at the night sky.
Shiva shifted closer, uncomfortable with her silence. He was used to a loud Raavi, a bubbly and a happy Raavi. He was used to a fighting Raavi, and he was also used to the fights now that he thought about it. There was not a single day in his life that he had not fought with Raavi and he wanted to keep it that way.
"Teri himmat kaisi ho rahi hai? Huh?" He looked at her, roaring aloud, "tu Shiva Pandya ko ignore kar rahi hai?"
She once again ignored him, but her eyes were fixed on the nothingness in front of her.
"Dekh chipkali," He tried once again, he was as stubborn as she was. "Tu kuch zyaada bhaav kha rahi hai bhi, bhul mat, tu aaj bhi mere liye chipkali hi hai, jo mere haato se marregi."
"Marna aasan lag raha hai abhi," Raavi spoke, finally, her sad words making Shiva more anxious. "Soch rahi hu ki agar marr jaungi toh shayad..." But she stopped, shutting her eyes and sighed.
Shiva gulped, looking at Raavi and never thought he would be this sad at her being broken. He always belittled her, troubled her, fought with her and wanted her to be unhappy and sad because she was his Maami ki Behen ki Beti. But now when she was really broken, sad and done with life, he felt terrible.
Shiva scoffed, taking a few pebbles and dropping it and Raavi heard the sound of it hitting the deep lake. "Deep bhi hai aur height bhi," He said, as she looked down, "So, I would have the same risk as you if you jump in."
Confused, Raavi looked at him, "matlab?"
"Matlab gadhedi," He hit her head with his fingers, "if you jump, I have to jump too. Warna tu toh chal degi, tere murder ka ilzaam mujh pe ayega." She rolled her eyes at his response, "and this is exactly what Maami wants, me behind bars."
"Tu jaa Shiva," Raavi was tired of his stupid conversations, "please, mujhe kuch dher akela rehna hai."
"Nahi chod sakta," Shiva said, throwing another pebble, looking at her.
"Why are you troubling me even now?" She ranted, tired of his idiocy, "are you so heartless that you are here to enjoy me being in pain?" She asked, frustrated, "or instead of being happy at your house with your newly married brother you find more happiness here? Seeing me cry?" Raavi shook her head, "I am not going to cry, if that is what you want. So please."
Shiva spoke nothing after that for a minute or so as he only looked at her, her makeup was still intact but her devastated pain was evident in those eyes, and although she was the most prettiest girl in Somnath, she was the most saddest today. Her heart was shattered and Shiva may not know how that felt, he knew that Raavi did not deserve this, atleast not on her wedding day.
"Kisine mujhe aise hi ek baar kaha tha," He spoke softly, looking ahead as Raavi held her rant, "nahi jaungi tujhe akela chodke, muh todna hai toh tod le," At the familiar words Raavi instantly looked at him, and he smiled sadly, turning to meet her eyes, "toh tuje muh todna hai toh tod le, but main nahi jaunga tuje akela chodke."
And when they met each other's eyes, they went back instantly to a similar night, years back.
Raavi panted as she reached the top of the hill, and when she narrowed her gaze, she found him. There he was, that idiotic angry boy, seated on the wall and head lowered. She was relieved that this idiotic Shiva had not done anything stupid and before he could even think of jumping down, Raavi moved closer.
"Dekh chipkali," Shiva said, without turning, "if you come closer, I swear I will kill you." Raavi was startled and surprised, as Shiva continued, "I am very angry, so please, do not make me more mad. Just leave."
"How did you know?" The little girl of ten asked, confused, "Tujhe paata kaise chala ki main aayi hu?"
Shiva turned, eyeing the girl angrily, "tu chipkali hai, aur chipkali kitni bhi choti kyu na ho, jab dikhti hai toh pata chal jaata hai."
"Aaj tujhse nahi ladungi," She pouted, looking at the ten year old angry Shiva, "but I am going to come closer." And she rushed towards him, making Shiva even more mad.
"Tu..." He gritted his teeth, and she smiled, "Tu jaa yaha se, warna tera sar phod dunga." He raised his fit in sheer reflex as he threatened her and Raavi quickly covered her face in fright.
Shiva tsked, "what are you doing?" He asked, looking at the fragile girl.
"I am covering my face," She said, still holding her palms over her face, "you want to hit me you can, but I am not going to leave." She was adamant and Shiva clenched his jaw, irked by Raavi's stubbornness.
"dekh Raavi, mujhe bahut gussa aa raha hai," He fisted his hands, "before I hit you, leave."
"Hit me," She lowered her palms and sat on the wall, eyeing him, "par nahi jaungi tujhe akela chodke."
Shiva gave up and turned, focusing on the lake, angry at himself and at his family as he hit his hands on the stone wall. Raavi who sat near him, shifted closer, but she spoke nothing. Shiva was also silently sitting, and the two kids sat there for a long time, patiently.
Shiva had been removed from school that day and his beloved Gombi and Dhara had to face humiliation because of him and he was so angry on himself that he wanted to run away but he had landed here somehow. He would have probably done something irrational if Raavi, the most irritating girl had not given him company throughout. And now that his anger lessened, he felt better and wondered on how his family must be worried about him.
Gombi and Dhara must be having a breakdown, he thought, they must be worried sick.
He got off and jumped to the land, and with him down, Raavi got down too, silent as ever. The always loud Raavi was silent for him and that made him look at her, "tujhe yaha rehne ki zaroorat nahi thi." He said as they made their way down the hill.
"Jaanti hu," Raavi chirped, happily.
"Toh phir kyu rukhi?" Shiva asked, walking down the hill, "sach mein tera sarr todh deta toh?"
"Toh main aise sar pakad pakad ke roti," Raavi held her forehead, making a crying face, "but still, I would not have left you alone." She said and Shiva smiled, looking at the most dramatic girl in Somnath. He hid his smile when she looked at him, "kisiko akela nahi chodna chahiye, especially when they need someone," She said sweetly, "mumma ne kaha tha, before she ..."
Raavi slipped on a rock, her ankle twisted but Shiva had held her hand, holding her and making her stand straight and they both walked down the hill that night, hand in hand, and a little spark of friendship had ignited between the duo.
Raavi had never forgotten that night, but it surprised her that Shiva remembered it too. He sighed, throwing another pebble in the lake, "kisko akela nahi chodna chahiye," He repeated her words, "especially when they need someone."
And that sentence broke her.
That one sentence finally became the last straw and Raavi lowered her head, crying bitterly when the entire evening flashed in her mind, the pain, the heartbreak, everything came to her once again and this time she accepted it. Shiva immediately got down and held the girl, turning her to the safer side while Raavi broke down. The pain finally converted into her tears and she reacted, falling off the wall and on her knees, as she cried. Shiva was quick to envelope her in his arms as she cried, bitterly.
"Why?" Raavi cried, holding Shiva as he held her, rubbing her back, "Why me? Why me?" She cried as Shiva kept her close to his heart, every single tear that escaped her eyes, hurt him more than he thought it would. "Main ye deserve toh nahi karti na?" She asked amidst her tears, sobbing and hiccupping, but Shiva held her shoulders, making her face him.
"You deserve the world," He said, meeting her teary reddish eyes, "and Dev ke saath teri shaadi nahi hui ye aachi baat hai, trust me."
"Kyon?" She asked, confused.
"Because ek tarfa pyaar ke liye tu bani nahi hai Raavi," He took her name for the first time in ages, "tu shiddat wale pyaar ke liye bani hai, jo tujhe milega." He said, rather promised, holding her hand and she sniffed, and wiped her tears.
"Sacchi?" She asked, in the smallest voice ever as Shiva looked at the girl in front of her who was now disheveled, her make-up all disastrous, her hair undone and her face smeared with mascara.
But somehow, she still was the most beautiful girl to him.
And his heart skipped a beat when he held her hand, "mucchi."
Raavi's heart broke that day, but Shiva's heart for the first time, fluttered in pure love as something ignited between them again that night, something not friendship but not enmity either.
Talk about irony.
