Gong Yoo wins case against woman who falsely alleged that he was harassing her; lady gets suspended sentence

Gong Yoo is one of the most respected actors from the Korean entertainment industry. Dramas and movies like Goblin, Squid Game, Coffee Prince, Train To Busan have earned him millions of followers all over the world. He is also one of the most reclusive Korean stars who prefers to stay away from the limelight. Today, he was vindicated in a defamation case that was going on since some time. A woman had accused him of harassing her by stalking and keeping her under surveillance. Korean news outlets like Naver, Dispatch and AllKpop reported that the Daejeon District Court’s Criminal Division 5 sentenced the lady to six months in jail.

The woman who is in her 40s, has been given a suspended sentence. For two years, she will be on probation. She was charged as she was declared guilty of violating the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilisation and Information Protection. It seems between January 2020 and March 2021, the lady posted 235 comments on online forums saying she was being threatened by Gong Yoo.

In January 2020, Gong Yoo hosted a live broadcast for his fans. The lady known as A commented that Gong Yoo has been threatening her every single day for past some time. She also said that she was being tortured to the point of neurosis. The matter was taken for legal recourse. It was confirmed that Gong Yoo did not know the woman ‘A’ and there was no personal relationship with her in any capacity. The Courts said that her claims were groundless, and she harmed him by spreading false information over a long period of time.

The Courts said that as a celebrity, Gong Yoo is subject to a lot of scrutiny. They declared that this was a serious offense. This is not the first time she has been convicted.
