Chapter Two: Main Shiva, Tu Raavi
"Raavi kaisi hai abh?"
Dhara was forbidden to speak about Raavi or Prafulla in the Pandya House, after what happened last week and Dev's hasty decision of marrying Rishita. But Dev and Rishita had left for their honeymoon that morning and Dhara could not remain silent, worrying about Raavi's health. After all, she may not be their daughter-in-law, she was still one of her kids who had grown up in front of her eyes alongwith her little vanar sena. Raavi was still dear to Dhara and not just to her, the entire Pandya House, including the newly wedded couple, were sad at the outcome.
The one who did not want this wedding to happen, was no doubt, the saddest.
Kanta, the kind lady who was also Suman's close friend, shook her head, "ek hafta ho gaya hai," Kanta said, sighing, "ladki apne room se bahar hi nahi aati."
Dhara and Gautam who were seated on the cot in the verandah, saddened, feeling remorseful while Shiva who was afar, ready to go to the shop, stood still. He should not feel this bad for the girl he never really liked. Somehow, that night of her wedding where they had met on the hill, kept hindering his sleep and peace. The girl who acclaimed to be the most happiest and prettiest girl in Somnath was thinking about killing herself and that very thought scared him.
He did not like that loud, always cheerful and immature Raavi.
But he for sure hated this silent, sad and lost Raavi.
"Raavi bechari," Kanta added, shaking her head, "I spoke to Prafulla the other day, poor woman was in tears when she was explaining Raavi's condition."
"Condition?"
Dhara and Gautam were startled as they looked at Shiva, "What condition?" He asked, not minding the surprised stares.
"She does not eat, does not speak, just stays cooped in her room." The answer made his heartbeats rise in anxiety, "she does not want to do anything but stay in there and worried that she might take a risky step, Prafulla is sending her off."
That surprised all of them, "send off?" Dhara asked, "kaha?"
"No idea," Kanta shrugged, "but for sure, Raavi is leaving Somnath in a week and good for her. That girl needs to live her life before she destroys it."
Raavi leaving in a week made Dhara and Gautam sigh in sadness but to Shiva, to the mad beast, this was a shocker.
Raavi not in Somnath, not around him, not fighting with him, not being clumsy and silly and not laughing aloud scared him. He gulped, hands fisted as his anger rose towards Dev, who could have saved her heart from breaking if he spoke up before and then at Prafulla, the one who started this enmity between them but he was also angry on himself.
Angry on himself?
Why was he angry on himself? What did he do? In fact, he wanted Raavi to not get married to Dev, he was always clear with Raavi about their dynamics and in fact, the entire Somnath knew.
But he still felt so angry.
While Kanta left, Shiva left for the shop without exchanging any pleasantries with Dhara or Gautam.
"Joyu, Gaumbi?"
Clueless, Gautam shrugged, "kya?"
"Ek hafte se Raavi bechari dukhi hai, par Shiva ko dekha, ek hafte se ussne na kisipe gussa kiya, na kissi se baat." Dhara pointed out to Gautam who thought his wife was overthinking. "I am telling you, Shiva keeps yelling to everyone that he hates Raavi but instead, he feels for her just as a friend should."
"Shiva ki baat, Shiva jaaney." Gautam shook his head, "I think we should call Raavi for lunch with us. She loves dining here with us and we could atleast see her before she leaves."
"You are right," Dhara nodded, completely agreeing, and thankful that Suman, their mother, was out for a temple visit. "But Maami ko kaun manayega?" She asked, and they thought for a minute before looking at each other with a grin.
Shiva Pandya, of course.
_
"ye Dhara bhabhi bhi na," Shiva tsked, as he halted his bike in front of Raavi's house, "baat baat pe kasam deti hai."
Dhara has used her bhabhi shastra and requested Shiva to bring Raavi home for lunch and in that process make sure Maami does not create a scene. He looked at the upstairs balcony, and although it was empty, he saw a twelve year old Raavi, yelling at him.
"Shiva!" She screamed, her long hair tied in two long ponytails, and she was glaring at him.
Shiva got off his bike, he never liked if anyone raised their voice at him for no reason and Raavi, how dare that piddy girl raise her tiny voice at him. He looked at the little girl and then his head tilted when he saw a ladder put across the balcony and to his surprise saw a little Shiva climbing up to the balcony.
"Ey chipkali," Shiva growled at her, "chup kar warna wapas chala jaunga."
To that Raavi folded her arms across her chest, pouting in pure anger as little Shiva managed to climb across the balcony and stood in front of her. "Abh, chalegi?" His nose flared in anger, like always but Raavi turned the other way, upset.
"Arrey Maami ki Behen ki Beti, dekh, tu abh mera dimaag kharab kar rahi hai." Shiva said, more like yelled as Raavi pouted, near to tears. "Chal!"
Shiva smiled, as he leaned on his bike, loving how bold his younger personality was. He took pride in being straightforward and blunt and loved his raw habits. But he also loved how much Raavi would be affected by his words, or rather pretend so she could get some attention.
"Raavi?" Shiva sighed, he knew if he came back without Raavi, Dev and Krish would be upset at him and he hated pacifying people. "Dekh, tu aa rahi hai ya kidnap karke le jaau?"
Raavi quickly turned, her mouth ajar and hands to her side, "tu mujhe kidnap karega?"
"Haan," Shiva nodded, smirking, "if you do not listen to me, then I can just pick you up like this." And Shiva wrapped his hands around Raavi and picked her up by her waist and Raavi was scared at rowdy Shiva and his weird ways. "And if we both fall down, then it is on you."
Scared to fall to her death, Raavi hit Shiva on his shoulders and pleaded that she would come with him if he put her down and Shiva did so.
"Seedhi baat samaj nahi aati na, gawaar." Shiva scoffed as he held the ladder, "abh jaa, warna Maami aajayegi aur mera gussa ka para bhi."
"Shiva, tu Dev ki tarah aachi baatein nahi bol sakta?" Raavi shook her head at him, holding the ladder as he stepped down, jumping off.
"Kyunki main Shiva hu, aur tu Raavi." He rolled his eyes, yet when they heard Maami approaching the door, they held hands and ran.
And together both Shiva and Raavi escaped from the house.
Shiva watched the kids run in the distance and sighed, that was the day when Maami had forbidden Raavi from going out again and on Dev's request, Shiva had helped Raavi flee. The beatings after that was worth it.
Shiva looked at the door, if he went that way, his maami was going to for sure create a scene and make his head ache and then looked at the balcony, maybe little Shiva was smarter to avoid trouble this way. Smirking, Shiva adjusted the ladder from aside the house to the balcony, and climbed up, wanting to run away with the girl without his maami catching them.
He reached at the top but realised that the windows were shut and finding nothing but his shoes, he took them one by one and hit the window to garner Raavi's attention, "ey chipkali," He whisper-yelled, "bahar aa!" He hit his other shoe and Raavi who was used to silence, emerged out to see whether she heard Shiva's voice or it was an illusion.
Shiva looked at Raavi, the girl who had pride in looking both beautiful and presentable now looked absolutely sorrowful. Her hair were entangled in a messy bun, few hair strands falling one her face and her face so tired and lifeless. That one incident had changed her completely, her smile vanished, her eyes held no light and her face, aged ten years as Shiva felt at a loss of words looking at this new Raavi whom he did not like, not one bit.
"Shiva?" Raavi was surprised, yet held no expressions. She was too tired to express anything lately, "What are you doing here?" She asked, softly.
"Chal," He said, holding on to the balcony wall, "lena aaya hu tujhe."
Confused, Raavi shook her head, "Matlab?"
"Ey Maami ki Behen ki Beti," He shook his head, looking down to make sure that Prafulla was not there to scream at him, "tu gawar thi aur gawar rahegi, chal! Dhara bhabhi khaane pe bula rahi hai. And front door se dawaat nahi, khoon kharaba hoga, you know that."
Raavi sighed, shoulders dropping and shook her head. "Shiva, mera mann nahi hai," She sighed again, and Shiva could see how tired she was. "Just say thanks to Dhara dii but I think I am going to pass."
Before she could leave, Shiva held her hand, "Pass nahi pass out kar dunga," he threatened her, pointing his finger at her with his other hand, "if you reject Dhara's bhabhi's sweet gesture, you know me."
Whenever Shiva would hold Raavi's hand before, Raavi would shake it off or push him, but this Raavi just froze. It was like she had no strength left in her, not even to fight.
"I am tired Shiva," She managed to say, and Shiva knew this was no excuse. She was not seeking attention, in fact, the very opposite. "And honestly, I am not hungry." Looking at her, she had definitely lost weight, and Shiva knew that this was all symptoms of early stages of being depressed and lonely.
He had to do something if he wanted Raavi to be herself again.
"Theek hai," Shiva shrugged, leaving Raavi's hand, "I'll just scream and gather people. Then let your maami shout at me, and then I'll attack her, per usual."
Raavi shut her eyes, this was not something she wanted to see. Shiva and her massi, they were both so loud that her head would ache for a week after their fight and Raavi only wanted some alone time and no hinderance.
"Soch le, shaanti se khana chahiye, ya world war III?"
Nothing, Raavi wanted nothing, because she just wanted to go back to her room and sit in the corner and do nothing. But she knew Shiva and his stubbornness, she also knew her aunt was just as same as Shiva and Raavi sighed again.
"Fine," Raavi decided that she'd just tag along Shiva, get this lunch over with and come back and sulk. "Let me get changed," She said but Shiva held her hand.
"Acchi lag rahi hai," He said softly, and Raavi met his eyes, contemplating what he meant by that because Shiva never spoke nice words to her. "Just," He leaned and removed the pin that held her bun and let the hair fall down to her waist, "abh lag rahi hai, Raavi jaisi."
To that Raavi averted her gaze and turned, in that way hitting Shiva by her long hair and the very incident made him lose his grip on the ladder and for Raavi to hold him in sheer fright. As they held their hands, Raavi holding the ladder, and Shiva her hands, their eyes met while the distance between their faces seemed to be reducing.
It took them few seconds to snap out of it, and when they did, both of them ignored whatever they felt, especially Shiva.
And once again, together, they escaped the house, Raavi sitting behind Shiva's bike while they rode away.
Shiva met Raavi's lost eyes through the rearview mirror, she was not the Raavi he knew and if Raavi was to leave Somnath soon, then he would atleast get her back to what she was.
That was a promise.
