Chapter 3: Kesar aur Pista
Raavi was lost the entire time during lunch. She sat, legs folded, in front of the plate which had a lavish spread of gujrati items Raavi once loved. Dhara had specially made her favourite undhyo and Gautam had brought jalebi-fafda from the neighbouring sweet shop with her favourite papaya mirchi. However, not only did Raavi not eat them, she did not even look at the food. Her eyes were always blankly looking ahead, or down at her plate, hands refusing to touch the food.
Gautam, Krish and Shiva were eating with her, Dhara serving them, but Raavi who sat next to Shiva, only kept breathing slowly.
"toh Raavi?" Gautam offered to break the silence, "I heard you are leaving Somnath soon," the moment he mentioned that, all of their faces fell. Krish sighed sadly, not knowing what to say and thought it best to sit back while Shiva played with his food, his full attention on Raavi.
"Haan Gaumbi," Raavi smiled sadly and very softly answered, "in a week."
"Kaha?" Krish asked, and Raavi looked at him.
"Woh, mama aur maami ke yaha, Jamnagar."
Shiva who had a large appetite, felt bad seeing her not eating anything and hence, halted the morsel he was about to eat and kept it down. His eyes were constantly finding ways to steal glances at her without being too noticeable. He did not want anyone to consider his concern for Raavi anything more than that of general concern.
"But you always wanted to be here Raavi," Gautam said, completely baffled at the state of this new Raavi in front of him.
Gone was the carefree and happy girl, instead, she was now a woman of soft speech and aching heart.
"Sapne pure nahi hote Gaumbi," Raavi chuckled, humorlessly, "atleast mere nahi."
Shiva fisted his hands, the way Raavi was speaking was really infuriating him. He did not quite understand what the big deal was, because for him it was just an incident. He never fell in love before but seeing Raavi this miserable, he vouched that he would never want to fall in that pit.
But his heart was a step ahead of him.
"Raavi, kuch toh kha le baccha?" Dhara asked, now holding her shoulder, "aa jo, taaru pasand ki mithai."
Raavi shook her head, really not in the mood to eat anything. She had hardly eaten one or two morsels for the sake of the sweet family, but she knew she would puke if she ate more. Moreover, her hunger had gone on a permanent vacation.
"Dhara dii, thank you." Raavi spoke softly, she was so soft that Krish had to rub his ear. He almost thought he had lost his earing senses but kept quiet when Shiva glared at him. "I think I'll leave."
She would have left if it was not Dhara who stopped her, "Raavi," She held her chin, "I am sorry. We all..."
"Dhara dii please," Raavi shook her head, holding Dhara's hand, "dii kehti hu aapko, aur usse maanti bhi hu." Dhara smiled sadly at the mature yet heartbroken girl, "bhabhi nahi toh na sahi, dii toh aap hamesha rahogi."
"Aur tu bhi toh humare liye humari pyaari Raavi hai?" Dhara said, tearing a piece of the thepla, dipped it in the sweet aachar and brought it closer to her mouth. "Kha le, please?" Raavi looked at Dhara and then at Gombi and she felt tears hit her eyes again.
This all could be hers, she kept thinking, they all could be hers.
No Raavi, she calmed herself, please hold yourself. Do not give Shiva a chance to see you cry, else that idiot would keep teasing you forever.
That was what she always told herself whenever Shiva teased her or when she wanted to cry in public, but Shiva had always been such a bitter gourd towards her and if she cried, he'd keep teasing her. Her tears always worked on others though, they made Dev and Krish side with her, they made Dhara and Gaumbi to leave everything and ask about her but to Shiva, her tears made no difference.
In fact, he would scrunch his face in disgust, call her a cry-baby and cover his ears whenever she would cry.
For the sake of Dhara and Gautam, she gulped her tears, her hands fisting her salwar which was clearly noticed by Shiva and ate the small morsel which Dhara fed her. She felt so sad that she will have to leave them all soon and reminded herself that this was for her good. Staying here in Somnath would only be more disastrous, especially if she saw Dev and Rishita together, happy and in love.
She could not get their thoughts out of head. How could she possibly forget her love of ten years in ten days? Why is it so unfair that out of everyone, she could not get her love. What she wanted in life, and what life had given to her was drastically different.
Raavi had to get out of this house before she breaks down for real and gets more sympathies.
And she did. She got off the floor, folded her hands and took her leave as she rushed out. For a moment she felt she would puke whatever she had, the uneasiness slapping her but when she bent, the tears took a higher authority instead and Raavi broke down, looking at the entrance of Pandya Niwas and cursing herself to even think about being here.
Why did that ten year old idiotic Raavi dream this? Could she not dream about being something in life like other women, rather than being a part of this pain?
Meanwhile Shiva gulped, his hands were still fisted and food half eaten but he did not like one bit how Raavi had become. Just a week back she was dancing here, happy that she was going to get married, teasing him that she was now officially going to be in this house and now?
She just ran away.
Shiva always prayed to God that Raavi would shut up for one day and let him live in peace. That for one day she would just grow up from her happy bubble and live in a harsh reality. That for once, Raavi would stop being so freaking lively and understand that life was not all roses.
But now that those days had arrived, Shiva took back all he asked for.
Because her happy and carefree nature made Somnath a better place to live, and her loud laughter and bright eyes made his day bearable. And now when living was getting unbearable for her, how could he leave her be?
These were not the values Dhara and his mother had instilled in him and this was not how he wanted Raavi to live for the rest of her life.
"Krish," Dhara looked at the youngest Pandya, "khana hua toh jaa dekh Raavi theek hai ki nahi."
"main jaata hu," Shiva offered as he got off from the lunch, picking his plate.
"khana?" Gautam asked, while Shiva quickly wiped his hands and face.
"Mann nahi hai Gaumbi," He held his ears, apologising to Dhara and she nodded, "I'll come."
With that he rushed outside, not knowing why his heart was behaving in the most weirdest possibly way but the moment he saw Raavi crushed, on her knees, and crying aloud, his chest suddenly felt heavier than usual.
Rubbing his chest, to rub off the heavy laden feelings, he heard two kids just on the other side of the road, and there he saw those two again.
Little Raavi and Shiva.
What were these two upto, Shiva thought, as he looked at the duo, shaking his head at how much these two fought.
"Do not touch my hair," Raavi, aged 10 said, "I do not like it."
"Sun, ghar pe jhaadu hai," Shiva, tilted his head, hands folded. "Toh tere baal nahi chahiye."
Shiva chuckled, as he looked at them, little Raavi gasped at the insult while little Shiva smirked all the more.
"Gadheda," Raavi said, hitting Shiva on his head, "tu koi ladki se theek se baat nahi kar sakta?"
"Ladki?" Shiva asked, looking here and there, clueless, "kahaan hai?"
"Shiva, tu bahut bada idiot hai."
To that Shiva pulled her hair and Raavi pushed him, but in that her neatly combed hair were now disheveled and Shiva laughed, pointing at her. Raavi cried loudly, holding her hair and Shiva was now getting glares from the passerbys.
"Rote hue aur bhi sadd jaati hai teri chipkali wali shakal." He taunted her, shooing the passerby and scoffed at the crying girl. "I hate girls who keep crying, and I am not Dev, who'll melt at your tears and do what you say." He challenged her, but Raavi wiped her tears, knowing that Shiva would not budge.
"Theek hai," Raavi smirked, sniffing, "Gaumbi ko bata dungi, phir dekhti hu."
Shiva shook his head as he saw the kids from afar, "chapli, blackmail karti hai." He looked at the little Raavi, "bachpan se maami par gayi hai ye, maami ki behen ki beti."
Little Shiva already had done his share of mischief for that week and Gaumbi would ground him if he saw Raavi in tears so he shook his head, holding Raavi's hand before she left. "Sun, Gaumbi ko mat batana, please."
"Nahi," Raavi was adamant, "main toh bataungi."
"Kesar dunga."
On that note, Raavi stopped in her place and turned, tilting her head in delight. "Pista bhi?"
Shiva grunted, as he nodded, "theek hai, kesar aur pista. Par rona mat." He said, scrunching his face in anger as he emptied his pocket money in buying the kesar and pista kulfi for Raavi who sat on a parked scooty and smiled widely as she held one in each hand.
Shiva kicked the dust, seeing Raavi spend his life savings on ice-cream while Raavi smiled, licking the kesar kulfi.
"Le,"
Shiva was surprised to see Raavi forward the pista kulfi towards him.
"kha le, bandar,"
"kyu?" Shiva was suspicious, "tera koi plan toh nahi hai na?"
"nahi complain karungi." She promised, asking him to hold the stick, "you take it."
"And promise that you won't cry?"
"Promise,"
While little Shiva took the pista kulfi from her hand, licking it, little Raavi looked at Shiva who was looking at them. She winked at him and pointed at the older Raavi who was crying still, and then pointed at the kulfi.
Raavi, on the other hand, held her teary face in her hands, crying still but she felt someone besides and to her surprise saw a little girl and a boy, holding a kesar and pista kulfi in their hands, both forwarded towards her. She wiped her tears, and looked at the kids, holding the sticks as they demanded they take it from her.
"Shiva bhaiya ne diya," The kids pointed to Shiva who was leaning on his bike, watching her, "aur kaha ki Raavi didi ko dedo."
Raavi nodded while the kids ran away, she picked herself somehow and walked towards Shiva who was only looking at her. She sniffed as she held both the kulfis in her hands, "You could not have given me yourself?" She asked softly.
"Tu leti kya?" He asked, standing straight.
Raavi gulped, shaking her head, "mera mann nahi hai, Shiva."
"Toh phek de." He said, folding his arms across his chest.
Sighing, Raavi brought the kesar kulfi closer to her mouth, it smelled good and it had been ages since she last had her favourite kulfi. Shiva hid his happiness when Raavi licked the kulfi and his heavy heart suddenly felt lighter.
"Le," Raavi forwarded the pista kulfi towards him.
"Kyu?"
"I won't cry,"
"Promise?"
Raavi nodded, a small tiny smile on her face, "promise."
Shiva took the kulfi stick from her hand, their fingers brushing in the process and their eyes met. This was their routine in their childhood, Raavi would cry and blackmail Shiva, Shiva would pacify her with two kulfis, she'd take her favourite and give Shiva his.
"Yaad hai?" Shiva asked, taking a bite of the pista kulfi, "kaise blackmail karti tu mujhe?" He said, breaking the silence while they leaned on his bike.
Just like good old days.
"Yaad hai," Raavi nodded, her kulfi was melting in her hand, she hardly ate it. "Whenever I wanted to eat kulfis, I'd start crying whenever you'd tease me and..."
"And to shut you up I'd bring you these two kulfis..." He chuckled, watching the girl turn, meeting his eyes. "Why would you never cry in front of Dev or Krish?" He asked.
"Because Dev and Krish were very sweet," She tilted her head, the little spark of old Raavi was visible in her eyes, "jab bhi roti thi, kitne pyaar se puckharte the mujhe, aur tu, rote dekhkhe kaan band kar leta tha." She smiled, and Shiva froze.
She smiled.
Raavi smiled.
It was just a week since the incident, but it really felt like a decade since he had seen her smile, and now when she did, he could not believe it. His eyes were stationed at her, trying to capture her smile in his memory for days to come, afraid that for now, he would have to do with this.
"And it was a win-win for me," Raavi said, the little smile still lingering on her lips, "whenever I was really sad, I'd go to Dev and he'd listen to me and whenever I wanted to have some kulfis, I'd go to you." She chuckled, licking the kesar kulfi that now spilled on her hand and Shiva gulped, his eyes were refusing to let go of her, especially realising how pretty her smile was. "Bandar tha tu, apni saari pocket-money mujhe kulfi dene mein barbaad kar deta tha." She shook her head, as Shiva found himself smiling back, his kulfi now melting on his hand.
"Phir tu rona band kar deti thi," He said, meeting her eyes, "win-win for me too, jaise abhi."
That snapped Raavi out of her happy stance, and she found his eyes more intense and purposeful than the angry ones before. She averted her gaze and stepped back, throwing the kulfi away and wiped her hand on the kerchief. "I should go home," She said, softly and Shiva finished his kulfi in one bite.
"Aaja, chod deta hu." He sat on his bike, "warna maami hum dono ke sarr pe baithkar tandav karegi."
And as they rode back, Raavi's little smile had made Shiva breathe again.
If she laughed, Shiva thought, this may help him be back to his original self again.
Because this was clearly not him.
This was not the Shiva Pandya he claimed to be.
This was someone else.

A/N: By this you would know that the childhood Shiva and Raavi are going to play a pivtol role in making Shiva realise that they have something more than just bickering. Also, they are just Shiva's memories.
