this has happened to me....not with the emancipated woman and child (at least not yet) but with some other issues..i seemed to have stopped caring

Well, not talking about the awards or critical acclaim, but I have started to feel ... the emaciated child and her mother need more attention and promotion so that they can survive and also to make us ensure that they get a better life. Happiness and rich will thrive and do not require more attention than what they already receive and get.

I wanted to write more... but still thinking... 😊 just my POV.

Thats a wonderful POV ....... I'm all for it if its taken this way ....... You know actually there are peoply like CRY who do it in this way ......... they promote the pictures of poor children who need our support ..... and it really works ........
It's only this contest / awards thing that makes me mad ..... enter a famous contest .... win the first place and the critical acclaim ..... pocket the prize ...... enjoy your cocktails ...... go home without so much as a backward glance .......

Arwen, it's more of out of sight and out of mind scenario. If we only see the good, will we ever know that there is a darker alley too. B'lore is all about success, progress and pubs, but when actor Rajkumar passed away, one saw the other side of B'lore... if we do not show them or give them the space, we will lose touch with reality.

Dawn, most of us are like that... use people to achieve our goals, and then dump them afterward. These creatives are no different. And, I do not see Slumdog Millionaire as a movie inspiring us to do something or showing us our darker corners. It's just another Masala movie.

I read a news report in NYT some months ago about the situation in one of the African countries due to drought and civil war. Trust me Dawn, when I think about what was mentioned in the report, I still get disturbed.

Totally Agree .......... An ........
Out of sight is really out of mind .........
Maybe here the point is how things are portrayed .......
Sensitively or with sensationalism .........
We do have quite a few documentaries which highlight issues like this with sensitivity .....
Then we have the TV serial kinds which sensationalise the whole thing .........
Ever watch the crime story serial ?? ..... dont remember which channel it used to come on ....... but they used to show real life crime stories ............
It was absolute 🤢🤢🤢 ....
They used to say they are highlighting the crime .... it was more like a perversely voyueristic show ........
And the sickening thing was it was quite a hit ....... 🤢

How many of us watch a documentary showing the plight of humans... ya, people may watch wildlife documentaries that come on Animal Planet or National Geographic, but will we watch a slum being shown. I doubt that.

Crime stories... I do not watch, horrible acting and horrible narration.

I am putting a different view here (I most often think from both the sides and get confused)... if these serials are not sensationalized or not packaged well, how many of the people out there will watch them... I do not think anyone will be interested.

@Dawn- Am watching Slumdog today (on my comp 😉) Rahman, Resul and Gulzar, yes, amazing honors for India.. not ARR's best work, but he deserved an Academy Award since very long, that man is a living legend. I rate him the best musician in the world. I was ecstatic the day the Awards were announced.

Let me know your view on slumdog later ........Somehow I cant bring myself to watch the whole movie .....
About ARR ..... Slumdog is certainly not his best ...... I still love his first film best "Roja" a Tamil film .....

@ pink .... Very true ............ one of the painful facts of life.
Personally ... I do watch docs ..... usually the ones that highlight the good work being done for some particular cause ...... most of them are well made ... they make you think and realise that life out there is very difficult for some people ........ and they mostly end focussing on the organisations that are actively involved in the upliftment of these people ......
I do that sometimes too ...... think from both sides ......... and then get confused .... 😕
After all life is not all black and white ..... so many grey shades in between ............😕

Ok guys ...... I have to go now ......
Lets end this serious discussion with a little joke ..... 😃
Jack and Max are walking to a religious service.
Jack wonders whether it would be all right to smoke while praying.
Max replies, "Why don't you ask the Priest?"
So Jack goes up to the Priest and asks, "Priest, may I smoke while I
pray?"
The Priest says, "No, my son, you may not. That's utter
disrespect to our religion."

Jack goes back to his friend and tells him what the good Priest told him.
Max says, "I'm not surprised. You asked the wrong question. Let me try."
And so Max goes up to the Priest and asks, "Priest, may I pray while I
smoke?"
To which the Priest eagerly replies, "By all means, my son...by
all means."

Moral of the story: The reply you get depends on the question you ask.
Example: Can I work on this project while I'm on vacation??
Ciao dears ........

Guys I have just read you rviews on Slumdog.
Yow know first thimg I said once out of the theatre the acadamy people were racist. That time it was a futile comment But I had a reason to say or think so.
The movie was just about average the music was good but then Rahman and Gulzaar have done way superior work then this but nothign ever got recognition. Se for such tremendous talent to be recognized it had to be a british director name in fore front.
The movie showcased such poor acting both Dev patel and frieda pinto were nothing to be seen again only people I admired in the movie were ever brilliant Irfan Khan and Saurabh Shukla. Even Anil kapoor was not that impressive if you ask me.
Yesterday I baught the new signature collection of Rahman and was listening to it the whole day mund you it has Jai ho and Ringa from slumdog as well. Trust me the other numbers be it from Roja or Tall sounded much better then those. And Gulzaar and Rahman combination in Dilse was mindblowing. Never mind for all this finally the maestros got the recognotion they deserved and I am sure there are more laurels to come.
Coming to Delhi 6 Brilliant is the word. Damn the riviews I think the movie did what it had to. It was a satire and a brilliant one at it. parallel and yet commercial. Kudos to Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra for doing such a brilliant job.
