My fond rakhi memories!

For a brother, a sister can be that interfering busybody, his closest friend, the one he protects, the one he shelters, the one he loves, and the one he sometimes scolds. For the sister, a brother, can be a pain, especially if he is overprotective, a comforting shoulder, a knight to protect her from the scalding looks and comments she is prone to attract. Thankfully, there is a day when this relationship is highlighted in the form of Raksha Bandhan.

A few of our telly celebs share with us their most memorable Rakhi day.

Tarun Khanna: Whenever I have been at my hometown in Delhi, all my cousin sisters land up together and tie me so many rakhis. But one day it so happened that I had a ramp show right on the day of Raksha Bandhan, near Chandigarh and I didn't want to disappoint my sisters. So I drove all the way from Chandigarh to Delhi, which was an eight hour drive, just to be there and make their day.

Shveta Salve: I have a brother who is eight years younger to me; he's more like a child to me. Unlike the normal course were sisters become rich on Raksha Bandhan, it's me who ends up spending a lot. Coming to one nostalgic rakhi day, I remember when he was in the ninth grade, he gifted me a lipstick and a hair brush. He said, "I felt so awkward in that ladies shop, buying such stuff". This sweet and thoughtful effort especially for me on his part meant a lot.

Amit Khanna: For me it is a day to call truce! My sister and I are always bickering about petty things. There have been times when we have not spoken for months and the matter gets resolved on Raksha Bandhan. So every Raksha Bandan holds special significance for me. Nevertheless, she makes sure to get even with me by digging a big hole in my pocket. But like a good brother, I always look forward to this day as the ritual of getting a rakhi tied is fun.

Mansi Verma: This auspicious day holds a different appeal for me. I had never tied a rakhi all my life as I don't have a brother. But thanks to CID Special Squad (Star One), I found a caring brother in my co-star Nimai Bali. It so happened that I always saw an uncanny resemblance between Nimai and Dharmendra, so I nicknamed him paaji. And a beautiful relation between us developed; he started treating me as his younger sister. He would look after to my needs, make me comfortable on the sets and get very possessive when I would be conversing with other co-stars. Thus I tied him a rakhi to commemorate all the good times that we shared. I am excited and looking forward to tie the holy thread on my paaji's wrist this Raksha Bandhan!

Salil Acharya: Back in my college days I was this typical kanjoos brother, the eternal black sheep of the family who would find ways not to spend money, especially on Raksha Bandhan. I would get away by giving my sister some chocolates or shagun. But once I was caught in a trap laid down by her. She bought a watch saying that it was a gift from her. I wore it but found it too feminine and told her to keep it. She later told me that it was actually meant for her; but the paying part was my headache. Since all this coincided with my allowance day I somehow managed to pay for the watch. She definitely taught me a lesson that day!

Oh, brother!

Amisha Patel to Ashmit Patel

Why tie a rakhi?
The brother- sister duo fell apart when Amisha slapped a legal notice on her father and accused her parents of controlling her assets.

While Amisha was expecting support, Ashmit decided to stick by his parents. Ashmit's infamous MMS clip with Riya Sen annoyed Ami further. The siblings are not on talking terms, but Ashmit has been aching to reconnect with his sister.

Bond beneficiary: Both of them. Rakhi's true spirit will persist when the brother and sister will resolve their differences and get back together.

Mallika Sherawat to John Abraham

Why tie a rakhi? They met pretty late. But when the hottest man in Bollywood met the sexiest woman during the Rockstars concert, Bipasha Basu had every reason to worry.

Apparently, the sexy Sherawat and the attractive Abraham rocked together. Back home, the rumours of John-Bips break-up made rounds to an extent that the couple had to make frequent public appearances together to display their devotion towards each other.

Bond beneficiary: Bipasha Basu will heave a sigh of relief if the Murder girl ties a rakhi on Johny Baba's wrist. This raksha bandhan will leave the Bong beauty surakshit.

Reporter Ruchi to Aman Varma

Why tie a rakhi? Varma, till then television's nice guy, took a stinging image slap when a journalist posing as an aspiring actress (code name Ruchi) made his amorous intentions clear on national TV.

Ever since, Varma — of the squeaky-clean, detergent-peddling image — has never been able to wash the blob off. Ruchi Reporter, on the other hand, became a household name.

Bond beneficiary: Should Ruchi tie Aman a rakhi, the actor can save himself from being the target of those innumerable jokes that were cracked at him after the sting operation.

Rakhi Sawant to Mika Singh

Why tie a rakhi? Does this one even need explaining? Everything was fine until pop singer Mika kissed item-girl Rakhi Sawant on the lips.

Then, all hell broke loose. Rakhi went to press crying foul on how her modesty had been outraged. News channels dedicated prime time slots to the 'kiss'a with the National Commission of Women also intervening.

Bond beneficiary: Mika, who must be cursing himself for having kissed Sawant. Raksha Bandhan seems to an apt occasion for the warring twosome to err... kiss... and make up. And, of course, for the common man who has suffered an overdose of Rakhi and her gyaan.

Priyanka Chopra to Akshay Kumar

Why tie a rakhi? Both the actors set the screen on fire with their sizzling chemistry. However, it seems Khiladi Kumar and Ms Piggy Chops took their reel life roles too seriously.

So much so, that wife Tina had strict aitraaz over their endearing andaaz. So Akki has decided to keep his grihasthi intact by not being seen anywhere near the former Miss World.

Bond beneficiary: Twinkle. The star wife will be relieved as the rumours would finally get buried and, of course, the on-screen lovers will once again get back in action. Only on screen, of course!

Shweta Tiwari to Ronit Roy

Why tie a rakhi? Tellydom's favourite pair, Prerna and Mr Bajaj, who manage to tide over every on-screen kasauti together, can't see eye-to-eye in real life. Known for their ego clashes and the infamous Holi hungama, these two grab attention for all the wrong reasons.

Bond beneficiary: The production and creative unit of Balaji Telefilms, who are tired of their stars' constant tantrums and inflated egos. Whether Shweta and Ronit like the idea or not, the Balaji unit will be more than willing to try this out for the sake of peace!

Arundhati Roy to Aamir Khan

Why tie a rakhi?
Writer-activist Arundhati Roy suspected the perfectionist Khan's motives of joining the Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) movement and challenged him to give up his cola endorsement to prove his credibility. Aamir, on the other hand, continued his campaign giving Arundhati's comments a deaf ear. That's how Aamir is, isn't he?

Bond beneficiary: The NBA movement supporters, as both celebrities are much coveted in their respective fields and their joint efforts will ensure better results for the cause.

Pretti Jaiin to Madhur Bhandarkar

Why tie a rakhi?
Starlet Pretti Jaiin created quite a sensation when she accused director Madhur Bhandarkar of raping her. According to Jaiin, the director had promised her the lead role in his films.

Known for his woman-centric movies, this incident blemished Madhur's fledgling career, but didn't leave a dent.

Pretti, on the other hand, bagged some B grade films. Interestingly, a film was even made on the Pretti-Madhur saga.

Bond beneficiary: Both of them. Madhur, who suffered sleepless nights after Pretti's FIR and constant media scrutiny, will finally find some respite. This could be a viable option for Jain too, as a rakhi could result in getting her those roles for which she once aspired.

Aishwarya Rai to Shah Rukh Khan

Why tie a rakhi?
It hasn't been smooth sailing for the reigning King and Queen of the marquee. The duo rocked as siblings in Josh, and they drained us emotionally as the doomed lovers in Devdas.

But despite being a super hit jodi in all aspects, Shah Rukh replaced Ash with Rani Mukerji in his home production Chalte Chalte when Ash's then boyfriend created a ruckus on the film's sets. Ever since, the two haven't shared screen space.

Bond beneficiary: Be it the all-consuming passion of Devdas-Paro, or the sibling revelry of Max-Shirley, SRK-Ash have been stunning. For the sake of their fans and film lovers, the two should think over our suggestion. Do we hear a ceasefire?

Ekta Kapoor to Rajeev Khandelwal

Why tie a rakhi?
He was her blue-eyed boy, and rightly so. Rajeev Khandelwal became a household name when he played Sujal in Kahiin To Hoga. The show's star attraction was his irrepressible chemistry with Kashish (Aamna Shariff). But the producer and actor parted ways when Rajeev started to have problems with the script and decided to quit. This decision was a loss to both the parties, as KTH could never revive the old magic nor could Rajeev.

Bond beneficiary: Besides brother Tusshar, Ekta should consider Rajeev for a rakhi brother as it will get her original star back to the fold. Rajeev, too, should consider going down this road, because by now he must have realised that it is the Ekta-Rajeev combo that creates the thrill. A truely symbiotic affair, if there ever was one!

Rajeev's ramp antics
By: Shaheen Parkar
May 31, 2006

Miffed, but I'm not showing it:
The Left Right Left cast Vikas Maniktala, Shveta Salve, Rajeev Khandelwal, Kunal Kapoor and Priyanka Bassi at the fashion gala
Rajeev Khandelwal sashayed down the ramp for Provogue's new line at a Juhu nightspot recently.

This was part of the launch of the title track of SAB's new show, Left Right Left, which stars Khandelwal, along with Shveta Salve, Priyanka Bassi, and Kunal Kapoor, Produced by Tony and Deeya Singh, this campus life drama has Provogue styling the cast.
Pay me

Immediately after the ramp walk, Khandelwal left the venue, miffed. To begin with, he was clueless about the catwalk. When he realised he was expected to walk the ramp, he wasn't thrilled.

He felt his name was being used to gain mileage for the event. He also made noises saying that, had he known beforehand, he would have asked for a fee, because Provogue was using him for publicity.

Khandelwal refused to comment at first. Later, he said, "Yes, I did leave the venue immediately after the event. Anyway, I am uncomfortable at parties and avoid them.

I was at the event because of the channel and the production house; my presence was solely due to the fact that I am acting in the show. I never asked for a fee. I don't think my name is so big to be used for publicity," says Khandelwal, who also anchors Sony show, Deal Ya No Deal.

Apparently, the deal to showcase the cast with the new line, was finalised between the producers and Provogue. Did the production team inform him?

Says producer Deeya Singh, "I was not in town (her co-producer and husband, Tony Singh, was present at the event) on that day, so I am not aware of this. But it was more of an introduction of the cast along with the title track. They were not walking the ramp technically. But as the ramp was the stage, they had to walk down it."

No 'star' treatment

Apart from the ramp bit, Khandelwal was angry about the backstage treatment. He wasn't given a separate make-up and changing room. According to an eyewitness, "He was extremely peeved that he had to share the make-up room with other models."

Says Khandelwal, "Yes, there were certain shortcomings which I voiced to the channel and the production house. Who else could I air my grievances to? I was there solely because of them."

Rajiv Khandelwal sports new image in 'Left Right Left'

By Subhash K. Jha, Indo-Asian News Service

Mumbai, Aug 13 (IANS) Television actor Rajiv Khandelwal has gone in for an image change with his new serial 'Left Right Left', where he plays a Captain in an army academy.

The serial, which is aired weekdays on Sony/Sab channel, is the actor's first daily soap in more than a year. He last shot for 'Kahiin To Hoga' on May 18, 2005.

Said Rajiv:''Left Right Left' takes me as far away from 'Kahiin To Hoga' as possible. I'm blessed because people haven't forgotten me though I haven't been that visible on TV. I wanted to break the myth about TV stars being forgotten. And I didn't vanish entirely. I did a weekly series 'Time Bomb' for six months. Then I did a cameo in 'ID', a music video and 'Deal Ya No Deal' on Sony.'

When asked if audiences would identify him only as Sujal of 'Kahiin To Hoga', he said people knew him best as Rajiv. 'Sujal as a character remains alive because I played him for two years every day, but people don't address me as Sujal any more.'

Rajiv said that 'Kahiin To Hoga' not only brought him stardom but also helped him grow as a human being. 'I stepped out of that world and stepped into a real world.'Kahiin To Hoga' turned me into a superstar. As a person, I'm equipped to take on any challenge now.'

The actor turned down Sony's supernatural thriller 'Akela', which is also on air now, because he did not want to essay any more tense characters and he feels Sudhanshu Pande is apt for the part.

'When I heard the narration, I felt there was no vision beyond the first four episodes and I didn't want to do horror. After Sujal, I didn't want to play another tense unsmiling character. But when I saw the first episode, I knew the makers of 'Akela' had a winner on their hands and Sudhanshu Pande looks apt for the part. I couldn't have done such a good job.'

Getting back to 'Left Right Left', Rajiv said he was hooked immediately after the producers Deeya and Tony Singh called.

'After Ekta Kapoor, if there's anyone I wanted to work with it was Tony and Deeya. I come from an army background, and I'm playing an army-man in 'Left Right Left'. When I heard the story I said 'this sounds too good'. Of course, I had my doubts. We can never depict the army absolutely authentically. I'd describe 'Left Right Left' as very subtle humour in uniform.'

Rajiv however clarified that this serial isn't based on the Indian Army. 'No TV serial can afford to depict the army. It's about an academy that motivates cadets to join the army. We've designed the visuals with great care and the cadets got actually trained. I play Captain Rajvir Singh and I love it.'

'Left Right Left' will take up only 18 days each month but Rajiv says he won't do any other serial simultaneously, as he wants audiences to know him by just one character at a time.

Meanwhile, the popular actor denies reports of his high-handed behaviour while anchoring the game show 'Deal Ya No Deal'.

'My high-handedness was news to me. I was supposed to have been smoking without permission during shooting. That's what I call smoke without fire. No one on the sets was allowed to smoke and I don't need to defend myself further.'

Rajiv added that he is not bothered by failure. 'In one year I've done all kinds of stuff. I failed with 'Deal Ya No Deal'. Sony expected a miracle but I couldn't save a sinking show. But at least I tried. I'm happy as long as the people working with me are happy.

On his long-term plans, he said he would be focusing on television throughout the year. 'At the year-end, I'll take a serious look at a career in cinema.'

RAJEEV KHANDELWAL : The Enigmatic Actor
By Piroj Wadia

He's often been called arrogant and charming in the same breath. He
may not be drop-dead good-looking but has the face of a poster-boy.
He chucked up secured fame for growth as an actor.
Rajeev Khandelwal will be the enigma of the season

The newest daily on air is Left Right Left. Produced and directed by
Tony and Deeya Singh, Left Right Left on SAB TV is an inspirational
and modern story. It captures the journey of six confused and
disoriented youngsters who transform into strong determined
individuals. The story also renders their realization for the love
of their motherland along the way.

At the centre of the young ones' life is Captain Rajveer, a charming
gentleman with a great sense of humour. He is is at the academy on a
high level confidential agenda. He is a taskmaster to the core and
becomes a true mentor of the youngsters, and he is portrayed by
Rajeev Khandelwal aka Sujal.

Rajeev's early foray into documentary filmmaking is by now well-
known. Since he has done one on the Indian Army, he must feel at
home with this series. "I never was a big-time documentary
filmmaker. It was more of experimenting with DD and in a small way I
contributed to them. I began writing and directing documentary
films. Till date, I have written about 30 documentaries on various
subjects, I made a documentary on the Indian Army and paramilitary
forces, old age, women's labour among many others."

That experience and attraction for making a film on the army stems
from his family ties - his father is a retired army officer and his
brother serves in the army. So to some extent that has been his
reason for doing Left Right Left. Ask if he did any preparation and
he replies, "Nothing much. I did go to the Raigad Military Academy
for a fitness reference point. Besides, my brother was posted in
Pune till recently, so I would visit him quite regularly and had an
opportunity to observe him. This kind of exposure has helped me with
my body language, nuances and tone of voice. But I am not playing a
man in uniform. I am seen as an instructor in plainclothes. But my
body language and tone will reflect my Army grounding and
discipline. As Captain Rajveer Singh Shekhawat I am linked with all
the other characters and each has a flair of his own. Shweta Salve
is a psycho-analyst, Puneet Issar is the principal and I am the
instructor."

Since the channel is not really a mainstream one, the show is likely
to go unnoticed, but Rajeev is not too concerned,
"Tony and Deeya
have a wonderful track-record. Besides, my idea isn't to rock the
TRP meter, I would love to do that too, but would prefer to do shows
which have a definite focus." According to Rajeev, Time Bomb was
always slated for 24 episodes and he is comfortable with that.

He does not feel left out for not being seen on a high-profile
channel. "I find it sad when I see actors running after shows. They
are being featured in three to four shows simultaneously. It shows
how insecure they are. I'm proud about all the work that I have been
doing. I'd rather look ahead and do meaningful work." Having been
off the hectic pace of the shooting schedule for a daily show,
Rajeev avers that he's finding his rhythm. "With Left Right Left I
am back to a daily after a long time. I had for sometime lost touch
with the schedule."

The actor is referred to by quite a few epithets, and his admires
will aver that 'pin-up boy' is the most correct . He has a gaggle of
girls gushing over him, when spotted. They just cannot take their
eyes off his intense dark eyes. The Balaji late-night soap Kaahin To
Hoga brought him to the threshold of recognition and popularity. He
became the face of Sujal Garewal, the protagonist. The adulation
that followed was something any young actor would have given an arm
and a leg for. All this despite the fact that Kaahin To Hoga was a
late night show. Yet, when he had everything going for him he simply
upped and announced that he wanted out. "Sujal catapulted me to
fame. I got recognition. I couldn't have asked for anything better.
But I needed to grow as an actor and as an individual." In fact,
many were the critics who scoffed at his foolishness.. Aware of the
criticism that gathered around him Rajeev avers, "When I walked out
of Kaahin To Hoga people were critical. And those who talk like that
are all losers. I walked out at the peak of my association with the
show, and out of the safety and security of having regular work."
But he did so in search of growth and a challenge.

Though he seems to be going for unconventional roles after Kaahin To
Hoga, he simply can't shake off the Sujal tag, and doesn't really
mind it, "I love it when I am called Sujal, and people still call me
Sujal as the association is so strong. In fact, I would be hurt if I
am asked who I am."

Playing Sujal for an indefinite period wasn't what the good-looking
actor had in mind. "I wanted the makers to know that I am capable of
going beyond Sujal." So his next role was in an action serial Time
Bomb which ended in 24 episodes. "I see doing such unconventional
roles as a challenge to show my talent." Time Bomb with Ketan Mehta
was different and challenging for the young actor at so early in his
career. "It was a brilliant experience working with Ketan Mehta and
Kay Kay Menon. It didn't do well as regards TRPs. But the whole
thing was a learning experience," Rajeev sums up. He also anchored
Deal Ya No Deal, which he enjoyed doing and was sorry it had to
close down.

The end credits of many a prime-time serial read 'Show Packaging -
Rajeev Khandelwal'. Now considering Rajeev's association with
filmmaking, it would be an obvious question if he is also involved
in show packaging for some of the serials. He chuckles, "This is
anther Rajeev Khandelwal. It is not the first time I have been asked
this question. He too is from Delhi, but a very senior person in the
industry and a good editor. When I was in Delhi making my films,
some media people would often mistake me for him, but as soon as
they found out I wasn't their man they would drop me. When I came to
Mumbai, he was already here by then by that time, we met and laughed
at the mixed-up identities."

'They don't call me Sujal now'

By Subhash K Jha

The Sujal image is about to be left behind. Or So Rajiv hopes as he plunges into a new daily this week.

"Left Right Left on Sony/Sab channel is my first daily in more than a year. I shot last for Kahiin To Hoga on 18 May 2005. Left Right Left takes me as far away from Kahiin To Hoga as possible. I'm blessed because people haven't forgotten me though I haven't been seen that much on TV.

I wanted to break the myth about TV stars being forgotten. And I didn't vanish entirely. I kept coming back in spurts. I did a weekly Time Bomb for six months. Then I did a cameo in CID, a music video and Deal Ya No Deal on Sony."

Audiences still remember Rajiv as Sujal in Kahiin To Hoga. "Not really. They know me as Rajiv. But Sujal as a character remains alive. I played him for two years every day. They don't address me as Sujal any more.

The moment you looked at Amjad Khan you remembered Gabbar Singjh. That doesn't mean people don't remember Amjad. In Kahiin To Hoga everything fitted perfectly. I became comfortable after twenty episodes only."

Though he evolved as an actor on Kahiin To Hoga, Rajiv says he grew as a humanbeing after the serial. "I stepped out of that world and stepped into a real world. Had to face a lot of adversities. Kahiin To Hoga turned me into a superstar.

After the serial I've been looking for reasons to justify that compliment. Whatever work I've done has helped me to grow. At least I had the balls to stand up for what I believed in. As a person, I'm equipped to take on any challenge now."

Rajiv turned down the Sony's supernatural thriller Akela which is now on air "I saw the hoardings and promos and knew it was a winner. But when I heard the narration there was no vision beyond the first four episodes. And I didn't want to do horror.

After Sujal in Kahiin To Hoga I didn't want to play another tense unsmiling character. When I saw the first episode I knew the makers of Akela had a winner on their hands. And Sudhanshu Pande looks apt for the part. I couldn't have done such a good job of it."

About his new daily. "When Tony and Deya Singh said it was called Left Right Left, I was immediately hooked. After Ekta Kapoor if there's anyone I wanted to work with it's Tony and Deya. I come from an army background, and I'm playing an army-man in Left Right Left.

When I heard the story I said, this sounds too good. Of course I had my doubts. We can never depict the army completely authentically. I'd describe Left Right Left as very subtle humour in uniform."

Rajiv however clarifies that this serial isn't situated the army. "No TV serial can afford to depict the army. But we've designed the visuals with great care. And the cadets got actually trained. It's about an academy that motivates cadets to join the army.I play Captain Rajvir Singh. I love it."

Left Right Left will only take up 18 days each month. "But I won't do another serial. I want people to know me by one character only."

What about the stories of his high-handedness while anchoring Deal Ya No Deal? "That's so funny. My high-handedness was news to me. I was supposed to have been smoking without permission during shooting.

That's what I call smoke without fire. No one on the Deal Ya No Deal is allowed to smoke. But I don't need to defend myself. There's two kinds of people in this world. Winners and losers. Neither can do without the other."

Rajiv says he isn't bothered with failure. "In one year I've done all kinds of stuff. I failed with Deal Ya No Deal. Sony expected a miracle. I couldn't save a sinking show. But at least I tried.

As long as the people working with me are happy I'm happy. I'll be focusing on television throughout this year. At year-end I'll take a serious look at a career in cinema."

Lost in transmission

Will the likes of Smriti Irani and Rajeev Khandelwal have the same audience impact in their new roles?

Sapana Patil Poojary

Indian television has witnessed it time and again. Actors starting off with a bang, often fail to maintain their successful track-record on small-screen

Actors Tulsi-Mihir, Parvati-Om or Angad-Kripa - the on-screen characters from the popular television serials, are undoubtedly household names with that one character they played. But unfortunately, the success rates of these actors diminished when they donned a new role. Actors like Arun Govil and Nitish Bharadwaj are names from the past, who could never grow beyond their screen characters of Ram and Krishna. It's not that they didn't get to play other roles, but somehow they failed to impress the audience. Such cases are many. Amarr Upadhyay, Kiran Karmarkar and Rajeev Khandelwal, who played Mihir Virani, Om Agarwal and Sujal Garewal respectively, maybe cited as few glaring examples joining the list in the recent times. We are yet to see if Smriti Irani aka Tulsi of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi will break this jinx. Incidentally, both Smriti and Kiran are coming together in the forthcoming Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasmaan.

Amarr begs to differ. "I agree that Mihir has been one of my biggest roles on the small screen so far, but that has never come in my way of getting better roles later. I am happy that people still remember the death scene of Mihir. After Kyunki…, I did Des Mein Nikla Hoga Chand, where I got a phenomenal response. And similarly, my role as Kunal Kharbanda in Viraasat; is being liked by many," says Amarr.

Rajeev Khandelwal reasons, "My role as Sujal in Kahiin To Hoga ran for nearly four years and became popular with the audience. Whereas my subsequent roles in Time Bomb, CID or Deal Ya No Deal were too short-lived for people to get attached to them. Besides, it's not that I didn't get an equally good offer. Currently, my show Left Right Left is doing very well but nobody seems to be concerned. Anyway, I am happy that the audience is yet to accept the new Sujal as they have adored the new Mihir. As for an actor's fame being restricted to just one role, I would like to add that Amjad Khan as Gabbar Singh is remembered even today. Does that make him any less important as an actor?"

Nausheen Ali Sardar too is a case in point. She was launched as Kkusum in Kkusum and as the pattern has it, she failed to grab eyeballs in Kaalchakra. Nausheen says, "Kaalchakra was not promoted well. But this is just one side of the story. There are examplesa of cases where actors have become successful in their second innings too. Take for example Pallavi Kulkarni, whose character in Vaidehi is as popular as the one in Kehta Hai Dil. I believe that if the characterization is strong, then it can become a hit."

Producer and director Aroona Irani who has given Sangeeta Ghosh new entity in her serials Mehendi Tere Naam Ki, Des Mein Nikla Hoga Chand and Rabba Ishq Na Hove says, "Public memory is very short. An actor is remembered as long as the serial is on air. But I think accepting Smriti Irani as Uma in Thodi… may be a little difficult because Kyunki… is still on air and Tulsi is a strong character."

Writer-director Aatish Kapadia couldn't agree less. He says, "The last role that an actor plays does not pose any hindrance to us. We look at the skills of the actor while casting him." Seems true; as he has successfully broken the stereotypes in his serial Baa Bahoo Aur Baby.

By Prashant Singh

Music has become an integral part of every television serial. In fact, according to industry experts, foot-tapping melodies instantly get the viewers attention and draw them towards the serial

Telly shows have found a new instrument to hit high notes of success — catchy soundtracks. Well, Western TV shows are always known for their peppy music. Remember, Ally McBeal's 'For Once In My Life' by Vonda Shepard, or Friends' 'I'll Be There For You' featuring The Rembrandts? Now, the trend is fast catching up across the Atlantic on desi small screen.

What kicked off with Amanat (Zee TV) in the early 90s, has come a long way since then. Interestingly, even mainstream singers and composers are working on the music of TV shows. The latest on this front is SAB's Left Right Left, whose soundtrack has been composed by Vishal-Shekhar with Kunal Ganjawala as the crooner.

Similarly, the period drama Prithviraj Chauhan — Dharti Ka Veer Yoddha album has seven songs sung by Shreya Ghoshal, Babul Supriyo and Udit Narayan. "Music is the best vehicle to capture a show's essence. It also acquaints the audience about a serial's mood in advance," says Priya Mishra, programming head, SAB. In the past too, Remix (Star One) launched an album with popular tracks of the serial.

Released last year, the songs were composed by Pritam and Bappi Lahiri and sung by the pop band Aasma. Even Sony's chart-topper Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin had launched a compilation titled Top 7 songs with Kailash Kher, Shaan and Abhijeet Sawant. Sahara One, too, joined the fray with an anthem featuring choreographer Feroz Khan, (he was assisting Farah Khan earlier) and Ghoshal.

No doubt, big names are game to join the telly world, but does it help? "It creates a lot of curiosity. It's the same thing as a movie, which gets publicity for its music," asserts Amrit Sagar, director, Prithviraj Chauhan...Thanks to celebrated music directors, the marketing strategy also becomes a cakewalk. Thus, the soundtrack of Left... was played in cinema halls, while Prithviraj's... promo song was played on several radio stations.

"The entire concept is very cool. It helps one relate to a show," affirms Shekhar. No wonder then, that star singers and composers make budgets hit the roof. For instance, Prithviraj's... album cost Rs 15 lakhs. "But we will soon recover the money," says Sagar. Whatever the case, as long as it sounds sweet to the ears, no one's complaining.

When Sujata almost slapped sister Suchitra...

Sujata K, who is currently seen in Left Right Left, happens to be Suchitra Krishnamoorthi's sister. And though the actor is 12 years older than Suchitra, she is extremely close to the latter. "I was fiercely protective about her and still am. Despite my having left home after marriage, more than 24 years ago, we continue to bond as ever. There is very little that we don't share with each other. The only time I almost slapped her was when she wanted to marry Shekhar Kapoor. We rarely interfere in each other's professional lives, but yes, when I do any meaningless one scene films, she ticks me off very firmly," says Sujata.
