TV is getting on my nerves'

Monday, July 24, 2006 18:30 IST

DNA reader/student Jenisha Shah grills TV heartthrob Rajeev Khandelwal on his fading lover boy image and 'good friend' Aamna Shariff.

Do people still call you by Sujal (from 'Kahiin To Hoga')?
Yes. Though I think now people know me more as Rajeev Khandelwal…but at times, girls do end up calling me Sujal. It feels good that people relate to the character so much, that they still remember me as Sujal. I'm grateful to them.

Are you consciously trying to dilute your lover boy image with serials like 'Time Bomb' and 'Left Right Left'?
I have been really blessed to get such diverse offers. But it was not a conscious effort; I really wanted to do something to break out of the rut. Even though 'Time Bomb' didn't work with the masses, people still remember my role in it.

So, to break the stereotypes of TV, will you try your luck in Bollywood?
Frankly speaking, TV is getting on to my nerves. I don't want to do anything that is getting constipated as a medium. As far as films go, I would like to start from scratch and not carry any image that has been built around me with my TV characters.

Since 'Deal Ya No Deal' flopped, are you no longer on the television A-list?
I don't think so. The very fact that people want to see more of me proves that I have created a niche. In television, that hardly happens. You might want to go and see a Shah Rukh Khan film, but you hardly want to come back and watch a television actor again and again.

You did a music video recently. Are you open to such stuff?
I'm open to any offer that provides me new dimensions and gives me a chance to do something different.

By the way, are you seeing Aamna Shariff?
I am not. Aamna and I share a great comfort level and rapport with each other. I sang a song for her on one of the 'Deal Ya No Deal' episodes and I think it was quite sweet. If I can flirt with her on camera, we must share a great understanding level, right? She is a very pretty girl and I hope something works out between us!

Superstars: telly-size

No star sons or protected protgs these. Dipti Nagpaul meets up with TV's heroes.

From chocolate boy features to rugged anti-hero. From years of struggle to accidental success. The tales of these television stars could well make for block busters themselves. And while most of them have an eye out for the big screen, they're making the most of Tellywood glory.

Rajeev Khandelwal: It still feels unreal

The TV industry almost lost actor Rajeev Khandelwal (Kahiin To Hoga) to the armed forces. With a family defence background, it was only natural for this chemistry graduate to apply to the army. And if it weren't for a misplaced application, he may never have seen his face dominating TV screens. As a child, Khandelwal always dreamt of becoming an actor, till they were replaced with more 'sensible' ones: of stable careers in engineering or chartered accountancy. None of that remains, except his love for chemistry—only, it has moved from the lab to TV. Having moved around the country with his soldier-dad, Khandelwal eventually decided to move to Delhi, and then Mumbai, in search of his lost dreams. And now that he's found them, he accepts his stardom nonchalantly. "It still feels unreal. The love of my fans often makes me question: 'Do I really deserve all of this?'" he admits. "I was known as a cute charmer in college. But I was no show-stopper. All this makes me wonder who these people are talking about!" The small-town boy-at-heart revels in his success. His small car has been replaced by a Honda CRV and an Accent. And brands like Tommy Hilfiger and Roberto Cavalli adorn his closet. "I've always been fond of quality products. But even today, I cannot pronounce the names of some of these big brands!" he says.Predictably, the next step is Bollywood, and he claims to have received some offers. "There is a magic that rules the big screen, and I want to see myself on it," he states. "I want to watch a close-up of myself on the screen, to see the smallest of nuances of expressions—and then see if I've done justice to my character. The day I do that, I'll know I'm a great actor."Star struck: It isn't just young girls who flood him with fan mail—and marriage proposals. He has older fans too. "One lady used to SMS her blessings to me every single day, for she considered me her son. It was touching, yet scary; I can't let these people down," he says.

All set for success

Nuzhat Aziz

Tuesday, July 25, 2006 19:00 IST

It's not just enough to have a great story and a multi-starrer cast. The television industry believes in going a step further and bringing grandeur to the sets as well. In step with Bollywood, its second cousin is also getting bigger and better.

Producer Prem Sagar of 'Prithviraj Chauhan-Dharti Ka Veer Yodha' explains, "We spent Rs 4.5 crore for just one of the palaces. We have also created a desert and a lake. No compromise has been made because it is the story of a historical character and traces his life."

Apparently, 'Left Right Left' (SAB) has spent a crore on its sets too. Confirming this, set designer Neelabh Kapoor says, "We had to research a lot for this show because we were creating an army academy." The set, which is sprawled over 12,000 square feet, had to be completed within 30 days. Neelabh continues, "The scale of the sets and their production value have increased almost by 200 per cent over the years."

Programming head of SAB TV Priya Mishra says, "We have spent a lot of money on 'Left…' to complement our story. I don't believe that lavish sets define shows. But it is a necessary evil."

Sources at Balaji Productions reveal that they have spent a huge money on the generation leap in 'Kyunkii...' A lavish bungalow with loud interiors and expensive furniture has been created. The sets of 'Saat Phere' (Zee) have been made to match the Rajasthan backdrop. "We have spent between 15-20 lakhs on it. The cost of the dcor varies each day," says supervising producer Abdul Karim. He further proclaims, "TV has competition from Bollywood. Glamour and lavishness have become more important than storytelling."

Abhay readies for an Eye Fight!

Tellystars generally aspire for Hindi films but there are a select few who are lucky enough to bag a good film, that too an English film! Abhay Vakil of Palkhi fame is one of them.

Abhay Vakil: "I play a psychopath"

Tentatively titled Eye Fight, the movie showcases Abhay playing the most challenging role of his career, that of a psychopath. To be produced by Andy Patel and directed by Carol, this 70 minutes film will star a host of actors from the US. Scheduled to go on floors in August, the makers have adopted a start to finish shooting schedule. But to the disappointment of Abhay's fans, this film will only be pitched for the film festivals abroad (Cannes and Locarno) and might not be released in India.

"I play a psychopath (Peter) who embodies many personalities, that of a female, a teenager and a child. At times I behave like a 10 year old kid and at times like a 30 year old adult. The character is sketched in such a way that people will sympathise with him. It's a very performance oriented and realistic role, " elaborates Abhay. "When I was narrated the role by Carol via email, I grabbed the offer without batting an eyelid," gushes the actor who has worked with Andy Patel (the producer of the film) on a music video earlier.

Abhay is doing a bit of homework for this film. He is studying and analyzing his character and meeting people of the different age groups that will enhance his performance.

So we ask the actor if this movie means bidding farewell to television...
"Well, I am open to any medium as long as I derive creative satisfaction from it. I don't want to essay clichd roles like that of a typical husband or a brat which I've already played in the past. I'm glad that shows with different concepts like Jab Love Hua and Left Right Left are being made. I would love to be a part of a such genre," points out this Mumbai bred actor who is busy modeling for the catalogues of Westside stores.

Here's one actor who is choosy enough for unusual roles notwithstanding the medium...

Do we foresee other actors following suit?

Watch out, Deeya and Tony

A few weeks on air and a jarring note has been sounded in Left Right Left, which is based on life in a military training academy. Anyone who knows the tenets of such establishments is fully aware of the rigidity and discipline from the moment a cadet steps in. How then is Cadet Naina Singh approached by a courier who hands over a gift wrapped parcel? In the first instant, no one is allowed beyond the sentry point, also any mail, etc. is always routed through the commanding officer. With due respect, makers Deeya and Tony Singh should pay more attention to such details. One must add however, the sequences where the seniors are ragging the new entrants was done with taste, and a touch of humour. On the whole the serial holds attention.

Ravi Gosai in 'Left Right Left'

Ravi Gosai
Rajeev Khandelwal, dashing undercover cop of Sony Sab's 'Left Right Left' has a new partner in policing. And he means business. 'Bunty Choebe', played by Ravi Gosai, has arrived to help Rajeev on his mission, though the help may more likely be in polishing off the canteen food!

Bunty is a rotund, happy-go-lucky soul who promises to infuse and energize the programme with his quirkiness and love for gastronomical delights! Enacted by Ravi Gosai, the character took shape at the wish of DJ's productions, which weren't satisfied with his short cameo in Zee's Jab Love Hua, wanting more of this skilled actor.

Ravi's kitty boasts excellent performances in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin and Jab Love Hua, along with forthcoming films like Mahesh Manjrekar's 'Big Bazaar' and Apurva Lakhia's 'Shootout at Lokhandwala' and other untitled ventures. He is thrilled to bits about his new avatar and rightly so. "Bunty has an amazing body language and after playing such a happy character, one goes home happy too!" says Ravi. Here's wishing all the best to Bunty Choebe on busting crime...and his seams!

New Delhi

Going by the dictates of his heart

Rajeev Khandelwal, the popular star of television serials, gives Madhur Tankha some takes from his acting life... He goes by the dictates of his heart. Even when he was at the peak of his career, Rajeev Khandelwal, the much sought after television star, decided to call its quits from Ekta Kapoor's popular serial "Kahiin To Hoga" when he realised that his character would lose his charm if he continued to act in it. For the all-important role, Rajeev had auditioned in the Capital and was selected from 500 aspirants by Balaji Telefilms. He was given a brief about the romantic character he was to play. "I was a struggling actor then and all of us in the serial shared similar energy and commitment levels. Because of this role, I received so much love and affection from fans from far-off places including Ranchi, Jamshedpur and Guwahati. However, after acting in 'Kahiin To Hoga' for more than a year, I felt my debut serial was dragging. I did not want to sleepwalk through my role. Even though my character of Sujal was well appreciated, I felt I could no longer play the role with honesty," says Rajeev. Not regretting his decision to bid adieu to the soap opera, Rajeev says: "I wanted the character to live in the minds and hearts of people for another ten years. Like the character of Nanhe in "Hum Log' ". Asserting that he had nothing against the maker of the serial, the actor says he was open to the idea of working with Ekta Kapoor. A versatile actor, who is equally at home playing an action hero, Rajeev's role in "Time Bomb" was appreciated even though the serial was nowhere as popular as his debut serial. As for his on-going "Deal Ya No Deal'' series on Sony Entertainment Television, Rajeev says it is different from what he has done earlier. "We are shooting the serial in a brand new style. I cannot comment on Madhavan, the earlier host. I think Mandira Bedi was expressive, while I am a shy person. When I was given the offer I thought it would be a difficult task. Anything that is challenging excites me. Acting and hosting a show are poles apart." Stating that he was extremely jittery before taking the plunge into hosting the series, Rajeev says he had inhibitions performing in front of 300-odd people. "Let me clarify that it was not a conscious decision to host the show. On the sets there is a theatre like experience. My fans see me as a superstar and I have to give 200 per cent to live up to their expectation. Unlike acting, here there are no camera re-takes. I want to grow as an individual, stand on my own feet and speak before the audience with the same panache as I perform my roles. Now, I am confident enough to act in front of five actors. The whole experience of shooting seven episodes has been mind blowing," he adds. Even though he has a big fan following, Rajeev has not allowed success to go to his head. Talking about another popular game show, "Kaun Banega Crorepati", hosted by Amitabh Bachchan, the actor says: "Bachchanji is a legend, yet he rehearsed for one and a half months before hosting the show. So when I got ten days before shooting for my show, I slogged like anything." On his upcoming serial "Left, Right, Left" on Sab TV, Rajeev says the soap opera is about an officer and cadets who dream to make it to the Army. Made by Tony and Deeya Singh, the serial will go on air in the first week of June. Stating that he is a small-town boy, who longs to live life to the fullest, Rajeev says: "I never stayed in a metropolitan city. I come from Jaipur. Since my father was from Army I lead a very disciplined life."

Even though Rajeev is trying his hands at different things -- he has also acted in a music video -- he has no inclination, however, to take up production and direction. He says he is not attached to his own popularity and believes in good "karma''.
