Rajeev Khandelwal has a nation chanting his name. People of all ages go ga- ga over him and the hysteria attached to his stature is infinite. Best remembered onscreen as Sujal , life is has a lot more to offer this ambitious actor.

Born on 16 October in Rajasthan , his life was not a bed of roses. He wanted to be a part of the Indian army but his fate took a different turn.He went to Delhi , wrote and directed a few documentaries on social issues like women labour. He also directed a fictional series for DD called Samarpan on the guys in the paramilitary forces which was shot in Kashmir.

Rajeev had a short stint in modeling. He had modeled for several brands like LML bike and Green Label whisky.Balaji Telefilms gave him his first break in Kya Hadsa Kya Haqeeqat where he portrayed a negative role as the protagonist. Although it went off air in no time , Kahin To Hoga created magic in the character of Sujal Garewal. The ambitious, go-getter and egoistic character was much loved by everyone. It was now , no one could escape the magnetism of Rajeev Khandelwal. He became so famous that the show was pulled off air because his stardom overpowered the show.

But that did not dampen his determination to move forward. Rajeev was back in action in May 2005 with the Time Bomb being telecasted on Zee TV. This 24 episode serial dealt with the subject matter of conflict . Rajeev has also done a cameo in C.I.D.in Sony. Rajeev will also be seen in Left Right Left cast opposite Shwetha Salve on Sony which has some excellent promos.

Fashion and fun

This one was a double whammy! Consider a fashion extravaganza by a leading apparel brand coupled with a hot and happening party to celebrate the first anniversary of a well-known men's magazine. Yup, there was plenty of action all right at the Provogue fashion show and the first annual Maxim party in Mumbai recently — models sashaying down the ramp in cool colours and lithe Russian dancers steaming up the stage.

The highlight of the evening of course, was the showcase of Provogue's Spring-Summer line, which took in an array of creations in summery shades. The first sequence showcased funky denims, cargoes, tees and printed shirts for both men and women as well as men's casuals with innerwear.

Next up was a line in linen in a palette of cool summer shades. This was followed by a collection of cargoes and tees which were modelled by the cast of the upcoming SAB TV serial, Left Right Left. The lead pair from the serial, Rajeev Khandelwal and Shweta Salve also performed to the serial's unreleased title track composed by Vishal-Shekhar and sung by Kunal Ganjawalla.

After maintaining a low profile for nearly a year, Rajeev Khandelwal will be seen in Left Right Left

Subhash K Jha

It's almost after a year that viewers will get to see Rajeev Khandelwal in a new daily, Left Right Left. "I shot last for Kahiin To Hoga in May last year. Left Right Left is a different ballgame altogether than Kahiin…. I feel blessed as people haven't forgotten me though I haven't been on TV for some time. I wanted to break the myth about TV stars being forgotten. And I didn't vanish entirely. I kept coming on screen in spurts. I did the weekly Time Bomb for six months. Then I did a cameo in CID, a music video and Deal Ya No Deal," he says.

Rajeev is thrilled to be part of Left Right Left. "I come from an army background, and play an army-man in Left Right Left. When I heard the story I felt it sounded really good, though I had my doubts. We can never authentically depict the army in its entirety. I'd describe Left Right Left as 'subtle humour in uniform'. The visuals have been designed with great care. And the cadets were actually trained. It's about an academy that motivates cadets to join the army. I play Captain Rajvir Singh. I love it."

Though he evolved as an actor in Kahiin…, Rajeev says his real learning experience occured after he quit the serial. "I stepped out of the reel world into the real one. I had to face a lot of adversities. At least, I had the balls to stand up for my beliefs. I can take up any challenge now," he says.

Rajeev turned down the supernatural thriller Akela. "When the script was narrated to me, I didn't see anything exciting beyond the first four episodes. And I didn't want to do horror. After Sujal, I didn't want to play another severe character. But when I saw the first episode of Akela, I knew it was a winner. Sudhanshu Pande looks apt for the part. I couldn't have done such a good job," says Rajeev.

Stories of the actor's high-handedness did the rounds when he was anchoring Deal Ya No Deal. "That's funny. I was supposed to have been smoking without permission during shooting. No one on Deal Ya No Deal is allowed to smoke. But I don't need to defend myself," he says.

The actor claims he's unaffected by failure. "In one year I've done all kinds of stuff. I failed with Deal Ya No Deal. Sony expected a miracle but I couldn't save a sinking show. But at least I tried. As long as the people working with me are happy, so am I," he says.

Dream comes true on reel

By Hindustan Times
Saturday July 8, 02:02 AM

With his father and brother in the Indian Army, actor Rajeev Khandelwal too wanted to don the army uniform. However, that was not to be, and he became an actor instead.

But now with his latest role of Captain Rajveer Singh Shekhawat in Deeya and Tony Singh's daily show, Left Right Left on SAB, set in the backdrop of the National Defence Academy, Khandelwal has got an opportunity to live his dream in reel life.Talking about his character, Khandelwal said, "I play a captain who's sent on a deputation but I still don't get to wear the uniform, though I do get to shoot off commands, as I train a few youngsters in the academy.

The character I play has layers and that makes it interesting to play. Besides, I have always believed in doing different things." He said, one of the reasons he chose to do the show was the producers, "who are known for quality work." Besides, "the concept is path breaking and I would rather be part of something unique. I am part of an ensemble cast and that feels good," he added.

Trying to tickle the funny bone

For the rest of the country, there's the Rang De Basanti flavoured Left Right Left that does the trick. A young generation, mindful only of its immediate desires, is flung together in a military academy. The patriotic element is yet to be infused, but once it is, it might just catch the imagination of the Gen Next that RDB hooked. It's to the producers credit that they have got the flavour just right, unlike Sahara One's Sati - Satya Ki Shakti, which couldn't do the same inspite of roping in RDB's writer Kamlesh Pandey (and tom tomming the fact on the channel, to boot). Sati ends up sounding preachy, hence doesn't connect.

Rajeev faces competition

Looks like actor Rajeev Khandelwal will be facing some serious competition, on screen that is. The actor will be joined by Ravi Gosai — who was recently a part of Jab Love Hua — in Left Right Left, in which Ravi will help Rajeev on his secret mission. Rajeev, who's serials post Kahin Na Kahin To Hoga on star Plus haven't been as popular was probably banking on this one to increase his fan-following. Now, let's hope that competition or not, this one works out for both of them.

Popkorn gets a new host

In a recent turn of events, actress Shveta Salve has replaced Mini Mathur on the popular show Popkorn. Mini has been hosting the show ever since its inception and called it quits owing to differences with the producers.

Shveta on the other hand is more than eager to slip into the new role of a TV host. She says, "I have no qualms about replacing others. I mean, why should I feel guilty just because I am selected to take over from some one."

The actress has recuperated from a long spell of jaundice and has plunged deep into her work. Other than Popkorn, her current assignments include TV show Left Right Left.

Youth oriented TV serials

Monday, July 10, 2006

New Delhi (UNI): Even as an "ad-nauseam" display of kitchen politics creates a sense of 'dj vu' among TV viewers, a host of 'new wave' professionals bursting with creative ideas are striving to infuse a "breath of fresh air" on small screen with their serials portraying the ''real emotions of the real people''. Amid a scene filled with 'Saas-Bahu' sagas or serials dealing with family rivalries, shows like 'Kittu Sab Janti Hai' and Sati-Satya Ki Shakti' on Sahara One, 'India Calling' on Star One' and 'Jab Luv Hua' on Zee TV invariably come as a relief for TV viewers bored to death by the surfeit of "family dramas" on the tube.

The latest in the list of "real life sagas" seeking to revolutionise the Indian television scene is 'Left Right Left', a show dealing with the dilemmas, hopes and aspirations of the youth of this country, to be aired on SAB TV from tomorrow. It is a story of six confused and disoriented youth who, looking for their true calling in life, end up at a pre-NDA academy. Produced and directed by the duo of Tony and Diya Singh, who have given to television pathbreaking shows like 'Banegi Apni Baat', 'Jab Luv Hua' on Zee TV, Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin' on
Sony, the show is an attempt to capture on the small screen the ''trials and tribulations undergone and varied emotions experienced by the today's youth in course of a search for their identity and purpose in life'', something which no serial in recent years has done.

Speaking at a press meet in the capital to announce the launch of the show, to be aired on Mondays to Thursdays at 2130 hrs, Programming head, SAB, Ms Priya said the serial was a part of their endeavour to present to the TV viewer something new and different from the content being dished out to them at present. ''The show reflects the sensibilities of today's youth, many of whom do not know what they want to do in life. In short, they are wondering whether to go left, right or left. Infact, being associated with the show was for me reliving my experiences as a young girl. For example, when I entered college, I was like the youth in the serial, who was wondering whether this (doing college) was really what I wanted to do,'' she added. She noted the show was different from those being aired by other general entertainment TV channels in the 2100 hrs to 2200 hrs slot. ''None of the general entertainment channels have addressed the sentiments of youth. Infact, the show showcases much larger issues that concern the youth and reflects their attitude,'' Ms Priya said.

Speaking on the occasion, Senior Vice President and Business Head, SAB, Vikas Bahl said, ''Our programming strategy consists of introducing new shows that include unique concepts, fresh new faces and an overall packaging that draws the masses, giving the much needed impetus to expand the channel viewership. At SAB we are moving in the direction of consolidating our prime time. The launching of shows like 'Twinkle
Beauty Parlour' and 'Left Right Left' is an effort in this direction.'' ''During a survey carried out by us in ten cities of the country, we met several people who said they were dying to see something new and different on television. Hence, shows like 'Twinkle beauty parlour' and 'Left right Left' are launched,'' Ms Priya added.

Tony and Diya Singh said the serial and its characters were ones with which people of all ages, from 7-77, would completely identify with. ''No matter what your age, there must have been a time in your life when you would have gone through the same dilemmas and experienced the same emotions'' Tony Singh said.

Diya Singh said the serial was another attempt on their part to present to the TV viewers a show with a refreshing concept. ''To be doing something new each time you come out with a serial is very satifying for a creative professional,''she said. Detailing on "Left right Left' she said it was a story of six youngsters - Huda, Naina, Yudi, Alekh, Ali and Pooja - who come together at a pre-NDA academy with varied intentions, dreams, aspirations and goals but the stint with the academy transforms them from being nave to responsible young men and women determined to fight all odds in life. The show features six newcomers in the role of the six youngsters, along with TV stars Rajiv Khandelwal, Shveta Salve and Punit Issar.

In order to give a realistic touch to the show, the makers made the actors go through rigorous training in various military disciplines to enable them to effectively translate on the small screen the lives of students of the institution. ''While making all efforts to make the show look realistic, we have also tried to give a very contemporary feel to it,''Tony said. Speaking on the occasion, TV actor Rajiv Khandelwal, known as the Sharukh Khan of the small screen, said, ''Though I have earlier worked in many serials under banners like Balaji telefilms, working with Tony and Diya Singh was an altogether different experience. I have never worked with a more creative unit which is so passionate about the craft''. The show also features Shveta Salve, who has acted in serials like Lipstick and Sarrkar.

I want to be part of new wave on TV: Rajiv Khandelwal

New Delhi, July 30 (UNI): He is the latest entrant to the breed of "new wave" actors like Varun Badola, Neena Gupta, Rajeswari Sachdev and Niki Aneja who seek to bring a touch of realism to Indian television amid a plethora of "all black" or "all white" characters in most serials today.

His previous appearances on the small screen in 'Kahin To Hoga' and 'Time Bomb' may have presented actor Rajiv Khandelwal in either 'passionately romantic and sugary sweet characters or out-and-out action portrayals but his latest serial 'Left Right Left' has this handsome actor in a role with a "touch of realism" about it.
"Working in serials like 'Kahin To hoga' and 'Time Bomb' has been an extremely pleasurable experience. In fact, till this day, I cherish the trophies I received for these serials. However, post-'Time Bomb', I want to be a part of the new wave movement on television. Taking up 'Left Right Left' is for me a first step in this direction," Rajiv said in an interview.
Premiered on July 11 on Sab TV, 'Left Right Left' has Rajiv essaying the character of Captain Rajvir, an army captain who joins a pre-NDA academy as a training instructor.
"The character of Captain Rajvir is an extremely believable one. It is difficult to slot him in either a romantic characterisation or an action hero image. On the battlefield, this army captain is an excellent warrior with a never-say-die attitude. However, as the instructor of the young cadets, who have joined the institution to prepare themselves for a career in the army, he is like a friend and counsel to them, almost like a source of inspiration for them.
At another level, he is an endearing and lovable character for the women on the campus. In short, the character has several sides to him, just like it is in real life," Rajiv said.
In fact, working in 'Left Right Left', which deals with the Ilemmas, hopes and aspirations of the modern day youth, was for Rajiv, an altogether new experience. Part of it had to do with the fact that the serial is being produced and directed by Tony and Diya Singh, who have made pathbreaking serials like 'Banegi Apni Baat', Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin' and 'Jab Luv Hua', all of which in some way have broken the current sterotypes on television.
"Though, when first offered the role, I was initially unsure about what I was getting into, I now realise that 'Left Right Left' is the best thing which happened to my TV career. I've never worked with such a creative unit so passionate about everything they do.
"No wonder, everyone working in the serial comes across as natural and not a cardboard cut-out. Working in the serial, at no time did I feel that I was under pressure to bring out the required emotions experienced by my character," Rajiv said.
He may now be a sought-after TV actor but in college, Rajiv had aspirations of becoming a software engineer or an army officer.
"In college, I was like a typical modern-day youth, extremely confused about what to do. I was filling college forms but was not sure this is what I wanted to do. In this confusion, I also toyed with the idea of becoming a software engineer or an army officer. I even applied in the army but my form was rejected. It was then that i decided to pursue my passion-acting," he said.

Ravi makes an entry in Left Right ...

Actor Rajeev Khandelwal, who plays an undercover cop in Sab TV's Left Right Left, has a new partner in policing, and he means business. Bunty Choebe has arrived to help Rajeev in his missions, though the help may more likely be in polishing off the canteen food.

Bunty is a rotund, happy-go-lucky soul who promises to infuse and energise the programme with his quirkiness and love for gastronomical delights. Enacted by Ravi Gosai, the character took shape at the wish of DJ productions, which was not satisfied with his short cameo in Zee's Jab Love Hua, wanting more from this skilled actor.

Ravi's career boasts of excellent performances in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin and Jab Love Hua, along with forthcoming films like Mahesh Manjrekar's Big Bazaar and Apurva Lakhia's Shootout at Lokhandwala.
The actor is thrilled about his new avatar and rightly so. "Bunty has an amazing body language and after playing such a happy character, one goes home happy too," says Ravi.
