Aamna is very special to me'

Come April 30, and Sony Sab's popular daily soap, Left Right Left, will be back on air. This comes as a piece of great news for the soap viewers and especially fans of popular TV star, Rajiv Khandelwal. The young actor, in town to attend a private function, agreed that with the World Cup coming to an end, he is looking forward for the show to resume from next week.

"It has been an amazing experience to play the character of Captain Rajveer Singh Shekhawat in Left Right Left," the actor said adding, "Playing the role has been much more challenging and difficult than I imagined and the success that I have reaped in the show has also gone beyond my expectation." The actor explains that he did not expect the show to evolve so much in the past one year. "Honestly, I did not think people would be so creative in TV. Initially when I started working on this show I thought it would be for some six months but the character of Rajveer Singh Shekhawat as well as the plot of the serial has evolved beautifully," he said.

Though Rajiv is not willing to compare his current role with that of Kahin to Hoga's Sujal, he feels the role in Left Right Left has given him more reason to rejoice. "It is true that Sujal made me famous but Captain Rajveer Singh Shekhawat made me more successful. Recently at a TV award function, I was voted as the best actor, which never happened while I was playing Sujal or for that matter for Varun in Time Bomb. This only indicates that more people have loved my character in Left Right Left," he said.

However fans might be disappointed to know that the character of Captain Rajveer Singh Shekhawat may soon come to an end. "It is only logical that all good things come to an end. But I am confident that my fans would not be disappointed, as I would give them something new," says Rajiv. So has he signed any new serial? "No, not yet. I believe in taking one thing at a time," he said.

Rajiv also refused to agree that he has been in a denial mode when it came to his relationship with Aamna Shariff. "I have never denied anything and as I have said before, she is indeed a special person in my life. However when I am not seeing her, I just can't stand and claim to do so."

The actor is also unperturbed by the alleged animosity between him and Ekta Kapoor. "Ekta Kapoor cannot afford to ridicule me and nor can I do so either. I never think of her, we do not cross each other's path and we never interact. She doesn't exist for me and I don't exist for her, that's it," the actor emphasises.

On a personal level, Rajiv, who has been sponsoring a girl child for three years wanted to adopt a baby girl. "However as there were some problems in allowing a single man to adopt a child so I gave up the idea. Personally, however I do not believe just because you are a single man, you cannot adopt a child," the actor said.

Shveta Salve's Goan Rhapsody!
[25 Apr 2007]

It can't be easy being a much-in-demand television actress. Producers want your dates, the media wants your attention and the fans want your time — to put it briefly, everyone wants a piece of you. Shveta Salve would probably agree with this celebrity philosophy. That's probably why she took off on a quick trip to Goa with good friend Aparna Tilak. It was an all girl trip, except for one man who kept them company. That would be Kunal Kapoor, better known as Yudi from Left Right Left.

Shveta enjoyed every minute of her precious holiday and could not keep herself away from the water. It was either the beach or the swimming pool for this water baby. And after gorging on mouth-watering cheesecakes and drinking loads of coconut water, the sexy actress just didn't have the heart to return. "I'm glad I took this break. I can't even remember the last time I went on a vacation. We've had the most amazing fun these few days," says Shveta. Showtime presents some exclusive pictures from her Goan sojourn!

'Link-ups began the day I started shooting'

Is it Rajeev Khandelwal or Vikas Manaktala? Priyanka Bassi, who's been linked with both her co-stars, reveals all to BT

DEEPALI DHINGRA

Priyanka Bassi had been chilling at home for a few days ever since her show SAB's Left Right Left took a break for the World Cup. But now that the World Cup's coming to an end, the actress and her co-stars have resumed shooting for the show which will be back on air soon. So did she miss shooting for it all these days? "Not at all!" she laughs, "I knew shooting would start soon and I was too busy relaxing to think about it."
Priyanka, who started her acting career with Bombay Talking, reveals that initially, she wasn't too keen on taking up Left..., which required her to do stunts. "And I'm the kind who thinks twice before climbing up a tree!" she laughs and adds that it was on producer Deeya's insistence that she agreed to take up cadet Naina's role. And how much does Priyanka identify with the roles she's done — Sheena in Bombay Talking and Naina in Left Right Left — since both were ambitious and bold characters? "I'm ambitious. As for boldness, it's just a matter of closing my eyes and telling myself Priyanka you can do it!" she smiles. She recalls the time she was required to wear a tube top during the shoot of Bombay Talking. "I was so sceptical but did it nonetheless," she says.
The actress says that she shares a wonderful camaraderie with her co-stars. But many a times, this chemistry has been misconstrued as something more. She has been linked with costars Rajeev Khandelwal as well as Vikas Manaktala. Priyanka remarks, "Linkups began the day I started shooting but I just take them as part and parcel of the game." She says that she was most amused when she read an article linking her to Rajeev. "I went and showed him the article and asked 'Are we going around?' and he said 'I didn't know that till now!' And I've known Vikas from my Delhi days. We just laugh off these rumours," she says. Priyanka also clarifies that she's not seeing anybody at the moment. "Work is top priority for me. I'm still a traveller who's trying to find her way across," she trails off. With this kind of focus, Priyanka's sure to go a long way!

Shweta dons a corporate look!

After playing a sexy spy in SAB TV's Left Right Left, Shweta Salve is all set to

dorn a corporate look in Smriti Irani's Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasmaan.

"I play Malvika Chopra who's not only interested in the mill land but even in Uma's (Smriti) husband. Now, this is the main bone of contention in the weekend show," says Shweta.

So, why has the Marathi mulgi opted for a show which is not doing too well on the TRP front? "I don't judge a show by its TRPs, the narration of the role impressed me. But above all, Smriti is a good friend, so when she offered me this role, I just had to say yes,"says the actor.

The actor is quite on a high these days. First came her spectacular dance performance in Sony's Jhalak Dikhla Ja and then her negative act in Left Right Left.

Revealing a peek into the upcoming show's track, Shweta says, " the second season of the show promises more drama after the World Cup. I am sure viewers will love it."

Sure they will!

Hooda put in his place by producers....

Shooting of Left Right Left is on full swing. The tantrum Vikas Mankatla aka Hooda was involved in a huge fight on the sets and the shoot had to b put on hold for nearly five hours."For one sequence this guy refused to get into the costumes provided by the production house. He insisted on wearing clothes of his choice. When refused,he acted tough. This delayed the entire shoot but finally he had no choice but to give in as the DJ's refused to cooperate. He was told in no uncertain terms to report ASAP" said a source on the sets.In fact Hood ais lucky that his producers aren't like Ekta Kapoor. If he was in Balaji,he would have been given the boot by now.But Tony and Deeya Singh too have taken strong objection to Vikas Mankatla's unprofessional attitude.

Rajeev continues to march 'Left Right Left'

After threatening to walk out umpteenth number of times; thankfully for the producers of the show, Rajeev Khandelwal continues as Capt Rajveer in the second season of Left Right Left.

Back as Capt Rajveer in Sab's
Left Right Left

"As an actor, I need to be creatively satisfied all the time. I was playing wait and watch with the show, as I wanted the creative team to get their act together. Now, the track in the show looks more interesting and it promises to be more fast paced. In the last season of Left Right Left, everything was left with a question mark and now slowly the drama will unfold," reveals Rajeev.

For those uninitiated, the first season was left at a high point where Naina (Priyanka Bassi) ends up shooting Rajveer Shekahwat (Rajeev). Also, she gets to know that he's actually the killer. Now how will Rajveer face all the students as he's their favorite teacher?

While Rajeev's now gearing up to face the heat as the suspense unfolds in reel life, but he still remains equally unpredictable in real life. So does he really plan to continue with the show? "Well, all good things in life come to an end, so I don't know what I'll do in the next two months. Just wait and watch. But, as for now I am reading a lot of scripts but somehow nothing has really inspired me to sign on the jotted line. I am really looking for something different but unfortunately there's nothing exciting. So, I'd rather chill in life than take on work which I don't enjoy," says Rajeev.

"I was just chilling out for the last two months," Rajeev

A few years back, the good looking actor became an overnight star with Balaji's Kahiin to Hoga as he garnered a huge female fan following. But due to creative differences with the production house, he walked out of the show. Later he was seen as Varun in Zee's Time Bomb which unfortunately bombed as far as TRPs went. And not many know that Rajeev began his career as a documentary filmmaker and has in fact made many docu-dramas on the Indian Army.

Taking a jog down memory lane, the suave actor says, "Kahiin to.. is history now I don't want to keep thinking of that. I want to be known for my acting skills and not by a character name. Also, I am a very professional actor. For me, it's not about just vibing well with a producer. In that case, I vibe well with a lot of people including my spot boys and others on the set," says Rajeev.

Well so, as for now Rajeev continues to face tigers, terrorists and tornadoes while marching Left Right Left

From soaps to suspense
Priyanka Tiwari
[4 Apr, 2007 l 1932 hrs ISTlTIMES NEWS NETWORK]

Looks like those chiffon saris and paper jewellery that our daily soaps had been banking on are failing to up the TRPs. Why else would the saas bahu sagas start resembling the likes of an X-Files? With the purani deodi ka raaz grabbing eyeballs in Saat Phere and the mystery behind the laal odhni in Betiyaan ..., and the CD in Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki , daily soaps seem to have taken recourse to suspense as their Unique Selling Proposition.

For Priya Mishra, programming head, Left Right Left , suspense is essential to add that punch to a show. "A little bit of suspense is necessary to maintain viewers' interest. I think some nail-biting suspense gives an interesting twist to the show, while helping to boost TRPs," says Priya.

Actor Achint Kaur strongly agrees, "Everyone has a taste for suspense and introducing the element in daily soaps generates a lot of anxiety and queries among viewers. My character had a mysterious angle in Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi as well as Karam Apna Apna . I feel that the confusion has an altogether different thrill, which viewers really like and eagerly wait."

So does it mean that the makers of tele-serials consciously try to create the anxiety through suspense?
"Yes", says actor Rajshri Thakur of Saat Phere while succinctly putting it thus, "It can be called a deliberate attempt. At times scripts are modified to introduce elements that draw viewer interest and it's easy because in case of a daily soap, the script isn't written in one go. The suspense element introduced in Saat Phere , became quite popular and aroused a lot of curiosity which was evident by the responses sent to the channel."

But are actors personally acquainted with the secrets of their tele show? Answers actor Sakshi Tanwar, whose show Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki also introduced some mysterious circumstances recently, "Most of the time the actors are aware of the suspense angle. However, when the script goes through a sudden change not everyone is well acquainted with the changes."

That a mysterious twist to the script helps break the monotony of the show can hardly be questioned. Adds Tanwar, "It could be called a trend because many shows are coming up with similar concepts. Tele shows are meant to entertain and if the show makers think suspense sells or, others will naturally follow suit."

But there are also those for whom suspense is an essential part of the plot and not just another factor to help spice up the show. As actor Sangeeta Ghosh opines, "I don't think anything that just serves as a filler could be actually entertaining. Tele serials are a complete narration of a well-constructed plot in which characters and situations are defined. Similarly, if the script introduces a mysterious angle, it has to be a pre-conceived notion that is being implemented once the show reaches that stage. It wouldn't be fair to call it a spicing agent or something introduced just to increase a show's popularity."

Priyanka Bassi to take more acting lessons

Priyanka Bassi aka Naina Singh of Left Right Left is all set to join IMAGO, the acting school of Barry John, located near Fun Republic opposite Yash Raj Studios in Andheri, Mumbai.

She had already done a three months Diploma course with him when she was in Delhi and is now planning for an advanced course in Mumbai.

"I am very happy that Barry has shifted to Mumbai and am very excited for the course, which will be starting from June," informs Priyanka.

She thinks that her acting has gone stagnant and hence wants to learn more about it.

Priyanka is doing an advanced course while several other actors like Shiney Ahuja, Kunal Kapoor, Irfan Khan, and Manoj Bajpai are planning to pursue a Master's course with the same acting institute. These actors have already done an Advanced course from the same institute.

There are a wide range of courses related to acting, script writing and directing. The courses vary from Diploma and Advanced to Masters.

However nobody thinks that her exit will affect the TRP's of the show.

INTERVIEW

The Captain's back
Chaya.Unnikrishnan
Rajeev Khandelwal may be a rage with the fairer sex, but the good-looking actor doesn't want to cash in on it. Extremely choosy, he does only one show at a time and currently it's Left Right Left on SAB. The channel's smaller reach and viewership doesn't perturb him as he thrives on taking risks. Remember he was the first actor to leave a popular soap (Kaahin To Hoga) at its peak. And now with LRL back after a break, Rajiv's looking at drawing the couch potatoes, a second time round....
You must be apprehensive about wooing viewers back to your show Left Right Left after the enforced break due to Cricket World Cup?
I am apprehensive, yes, but not about the viewership. I am confident that in the first week itself Left Right Left will get a good rating. That's because the show has worked in the first season and I feel safer this time around. What I am apprehensive about is the viewers' expectations. One can promise a lot of things but there is no guarantee that the end result will be liked by the viewer.

Are there going to be any changes in the serial?
No, there will be no visible change in the storyline, characters or the look. We will retain the flavour of the serial, but from now on it will be fast-paced.

Shweta Salve is not part of the serial anymore.
Her character had to die as per the storyline.

What about you? Will you continue as Rajveer for long?
Well that depends on the writers. I have requested them not to be greedy and drag it because people are liking it.

So, what is in store for Rajveer?
Without revealing the storyline I can tell you that there will be a drastic change. Rajveer will do his bit in the academy and then the character will come to an end.

Are you the spy?
(Laughs) No, and I am not going to say more than that.

Are you looking at doing any more serials?
Not right now. I am more than happy doing one serial at a time. I am not as talented as other actors to do two different roles simultaneously. Also, I love spending time with myself. I take a break every once in a while to go on a holiday. I am into adventure sports like river-rafting, rock-climbing and trekking. Secondly, if people were to watch me in three different serials at a time, I think I would lose my charm. As for money, I am pretty comfortable with my two-bedroom flat. Anyway, most of my time is spent in travelling. From April 28 to May 4 I will be away participating in an adventure rally which is not just about driving but climbing mountains and river=rafting. Chetan Hansraj and Rajesh Khera are also a part of it.

Don't you think that at this stage in your career you should be doing shows on popular channels with a wider reach?
My debut (Kaahin To Hoga) made me famous but Left Right Left has made me successful. For me that is victory. SAB doesn't have a huge viewership and its reach is restricted to India only but despite that my Rajveer is popular. Last week I met a 40 year old man, a corporate guy at the airport and he told me that he was eagerly waiting to watch me in Left Right Left, which is amazing. I can understand girls/ladies saying they like me (actually it's the character I played in the past) but the fact is people are watching and liking LRL. Commercially, a popular channel may have 10 people tuning into it but only two of them liking the show. For me success is when on a small channel even two people watching the serial say "Wow, this is it!"

Of all the characters you have played which is the closest to you?
I love Rajveer because I hail from a army background. If I didn't like the character I would have done some other serial. Actually, I love all my characters, the romantic Sujal as well as Time Bomb's action-packed detective Awasthi.

After Deal Ya No Deal, haven't you got offers for anchoring?
I did but I didn't take it up and thank God for that. Don't ask me which show it is, because I am not telling. Deal... was a big challenge for me. I wanted to see my range, and whether I could talk impromptu. Unfortunately by the time I got a hang of it, the show went off air. I had a great time on the last day of the shoot. It was a rocking episode. However, the show wasn't doing well when I had taken over and it did not improve. Next time I will be sensible and won't take up a show that's already on air.

What about films?
Every actor wants to be in films and so do I. At the same time, I am not in a rush to do one. I will only do a film I believe in. For me, content is the king followed by the maker. I am getting offers and am reading one or two scripts everyday. However,I am still getting third or fourth leads, not good enough for a debut and as I said, I don't want to compromise. It's a different thing altogether whether the film I finally choose works or not but atleast I will be happy and re-invent myself either on TV or films.

There's a buzz that a film is being planned with you and Aamna Sheriff?
A lot of people want to exploit our popularity and on-screen chemistry but both of us are clear that only if the film requires Rajeev and Aamna as actors will we give the go-ahead.
