Have Ekta and Rajeev patched up?

Ekta Kapoor

Balaji is abuzz with rumours that Ekta Kapoor and former blue-eyed-boy Rajeev Khandelwal have patched up.

When we asked Ekta about it, she said, "Rajeev hasn't approached me directly for a role in a one of my shows, but if he does, I will definitely think about it."

Looks like a reunion is definitely on the cards.

Rajeev Khandelw

Balaji sources add that Rajeev won't be returning as Sujal in Kahin Toh Hoga and will instead be given a bigger and better show.

Watch this space for more dope on that development in the coming weeks!

NO EKTA,PLEASE!

Gone are the days when ekta kapoor ruled television. Now there alot of producers with more than one television show on a variety of channels.Producers like Sunjoy wadhwa, kinnari mehta, anuradha prasad and deeya singh have proved their mantle as good producers, opening way for many other producers to pitch their soaps on popular channels like sony, zee and star. For a year now ektas soaps seem to be loosing their lustre and are seeing a major drop in trps while shows like saath phere, banno mein teri dulhan, kumkum, bhabhi, betiyaan are superceding ektas soaps in the trps race.

The lastest controversy to hit ekta is that channels have refused to take her shows due to them being regressive and repetitive.Ekta who was planning new shows for sahara and sab have been asked to stop working on her new concepts or approach other channels instead.Reacting to this news ektas associative creative director tanushree says"yes its true we have been asked not to work on the shows now but thats entirely because of non availabity of slots. The quality of concepts was not at all a reason for them being shelved. However programming head sab, priya mishra has a different story to tell,"its true we have refused ektas new concept for sab because it was one of those saas bahu types and sab has always been unique.we dont wish to give them regressive serials that affect the channels reputation.however if ekta has something different to offer we will definitely consider it."

Even zee which is airing balajis famous serial kasamh se has refused to take in more of balaji shows. To this ashwini yardi, zee programming head says"we have lined up loads of other shows by different producers and there ois absoluetly no time for a new balaji show.all our slots our full. Therefore for another year there is no question of taking any new balaji soap.Whats the use of preparing a show that will face problems of getting slotted later on."

Ekta on the hand is really hesitant to place any of her show on star one merely beacuse they dont work well and its a huge loss for her to pitch her high budget shows and get 1 or less trps as outcome. She is also against airing her shows on sony until sandiip sickand gets replaced as sonys creative director.

In addition to all this even her channel star plus which is famous of rejecting all producers for her sake is facing problems. All of ektas trusted heads are bidding adieu to the channel including sameer nair, peter mukherjee and shailjaa kejriwal, leaving ekta in a confused situation.sources indicate even her show kasturi has still not been approved and has been on wait for more than 7 months.Balajis head nivedita basu on her part comments."yes thats true kasturi is on a hold right now but it will air for sure in two months time.Infact we have selected divya seth to play a strict disciplinarian and the mother to the male protoganist in the show.Ratti ji was considered for the role but she backed out due to date problems. .Morever we have a new show for ary too and an untitled venture for star plus.We dont wish to start new shows on other channels as we are really busy with our present shows".Sources also indicate that rajeev khandelwal.ektas once blue eyed boy is being apprached to play the lead.

Seems like queen of soaps ekta kapoor has lost the magic her shows contained once.It is evident from her recent shows which have been unable to garner good trps and many in the last two years including kkavyanjali,k street pali hill, kaisa yeh pyar hai, kandy floss have shut shop due to poor audience respnse. In reality none of ektas characters have been able to become as famous and triumphant as tulsi, parvati, prerna and kashish.

Shveta: Not A Mandira Clone

The cat is finally out of the bag! Following weeks of speculation over who is the sleuth in disguise in the popular tele-serial "Left Right Left", it will soon be revealed that the spy is none other than Shveta Salve, the soft-spoken, popular doctor-cum-teacher Dr. Ritu Mishra!

While this is certainly going to be a surprise for the audience, did Shveta herself know that she would be playing the sleuth in Left Right Left? Well, she says that she did and had accepted the role only because of this 'twist' or mystery in the role. "I had accepted this role because I was sure it would bolt people out of their seats when they found out that Dr. Ritu Mishra, the most loving, mature and caring of the ensemble cast would turn out to be a spy! The entire perception about Ritu's character was to undergo a tectonic shift after the revelation and that would, in turn, add volumes to my characterization," she says confidently.

Though the character is a bit complex, Shveta found no difficulty in portraying Dr Ritu Mishra. She says, "I never thought on those lines. I approached the character as it progressed without thinking about how it was going to unfold in the time to come."

Shveta has a knack of picking up glamorous roles and even the character of Dr Ritu Mishra is one such - much on the lines of the one done by Sushmita Sen in Main Hoon Na. When we ask her about this trait, Shveta disagrees. "No, actually it will come as a surprise to know that I'm inherently not a glamorous person at all. I am very happy in a pair of denims and a simple tee shirt and given a choice would love to frolic around on screen in that attire too (laughs) but kya karein? My audience likes to see me in glamorous roles and being an entertainer, it is my duty to give them what they want. But talking about Dr. Ritu's role, I personally was surprised when it started being touted as a glamorous one because I don't feel there was anything much glamorous in it except for the chiffon saris, which probably might have reminded people of Sushmita in the film and which is what might have exhorted them to choose me winner for the MTV Style Award, a fact that I was very surprised, but of course very pleased about!"

Be it "Lipstick", "Kitty Party" or "Sarkar", Shveta was always seen in immature roles till this role of Dr. Ritu's in LRL. Is she consciously trying to shift her focus and orientation or is it coincidental? Shveta says its pure coincidence and nothing is being done in a planned manner. "I pick a role if it appeals to me as a package; I don't plot and plan whether how it will leverage me as an actress or how great it will look on my CV."

Referring to the controversies that have hit LRL from time to time, Shveta says, "Thankfully, I never got drawn into any of these controversies because I consciously chose to stay away from it. I do not like to indulge in controversies. But still if you want me to opinionate, I'll say that I was thoroughly displeased that the serial got mired in controversies, most (though I admit not all) of which were fabricated and created purely to hype LRL. In my opinion, this is no way to publicize a programme."

According to Shveta, such controversies may perk up the audience's interest for a short while, but ultimately they denigrate its value. Further, if at all one have to talk about the negative things, why don't they balance it out by talking about the positive side as well, asks the charismatic. Citing an example, Shveta says, "Why is nothing written about my and Aparna Tilak's (who plays Shalini) friendship, or maybe about me doing all the stunts myself? Or even, rather than gossiping about this actor having an affair with this actress, why not talk about the deep friendship these guys, who have all come from out of Mumbai, share with each other? I think it's ridiculous the way the serial has been hyped." We thought that going by the things, LRL will be drawing to a close soon and Shveta must be thinking ahead in her career.

The actress, however, has different ideas. "Firstly, there's no guarantee that LRL will wind up! It will depend on what the audience wants and if they want it to run for some more time, it will. After all, don't we have crappy soaps running for decades?"

Anyways, Shveta has decided not to do any more tele serials at the moment. "I am just going to anchor a cricket talent hunt show called Cricket Stars, which will see me alongside cricket-greats like Kapil Dev, Sanjay Manjrekar and Ajay Jadeja. I'm very excited about this show especially because I am getting to interact yet again with Ajay with whom I had a great time during Jhalak Dikhla Jaa."

This reminds us who else, but Mandira Bedi. Ask Shveta if she is contemplating to step into Mandira's shoes and she gets irked. "I wouldn't like anyone to make such comparisons though I understand that they are bound to happen since she has pioneered a trend of women commentators in tele-cricket. But though I respect her for her work, I would want to be known and respected for mine on an individual basis; for whatever I bring to the table. I have a fairly decent knowledge of cricket and will be anchoring the show in my style and would like the audience to remember me for that rather than looking upon me as a clone of Mandira's."

Remember Shveta in "Jhalak Dikhla Jaa"? She was not only praised immensely for her dancing skills in that show, but Sanjay Leela Bhansali had even promised to offer her a film! Is anything happening on this front? "Jhalak... has opened up a lot of avenues for me. I am performing at many places here and abroad in stage shows. As for the film, currently Sanjay is busy with Saawariya but I'm sure he will call upon me when he has a good role for me in mind. I do want to make a mark in Bollywood and there are some offers in the pipeline, but nothing concrete that I can talk about."

Finally we ask her about her wedding with Rodney Barnes, but the lady is not willing to make any commitment on this. "We are very happy with the status of our relationship right now. We are living together and are comfortable enough with the arrangement to feel the need to get married. But if we plan it, we will not hide it. As of now, the only plans we are busy making are for the upcoming Valentine's Day. This is the first year ever since we met that I'm in town for the V-Day and we intend to make the most of it!," is all that she discloses.

Subhash K Jha

I don't need Balaji: Rajiv Khandelwal
Rumours insist that you are going back to Balaji Telefilms?
I've always insisted that I'd never go back in life. I'll always move ahead. So there's no question of going back. The day Balaji has something new to offer me, I might consider the offer. But at the moment, no thanks. I don't relate to the stuff Balaji dishes out. I left Kahiin To Hoga because of creative differences. Ekta's school of thought is alien to me

Where do you think the rumours of your return to Balaji are coming from?
Search me! I've heard I rang up Balaji for a role. I guess somebody out there is desperate to see me back. But I don't need Balaji to see me move ahead. I'm pretty satisfied with the progress I've made. In fact, I've achieved much more in the last one-and-a-half years than I had achieved while doing Kahiin To Hoga.

What about your personal rapport with Ekta Kapoor?
I don't have any rapport with her. She's a professional. And so am I. Personally, I feel she's surrounded by the wrong kind of people. But that's none of my concern. For me she's just one of the many producers who are doing a good job on television. Ekta Ekta Ekta! Why do we go on as if she's the only producer on TV who's doing good work?

Which other producer is doing good work?
No show is really worth watching, I agree. Do you watch a single show avidly? Not me! But yes, I'm trying something different in Left Right Left. It's given me a new identity. They don't call me Sujal any more but Ranbir Shekhawat. That feels good.

You've threatened to leave Left Right Left.
Yes. I want its quality to improve. I share a great rapport with the producer-director Tony Singh. He has taken me into confidence. And we're trying to bring positive changes into show. From March 8, Left Right Left goes off-season for the World Cup for two months.

What about reality TV. You've tried it.
Deal Ya No Deal wasn't reality TV. But yes, anything new is always welcome. But it could become tedious if something else doesn't come along.

Ekta Ekta Ekta! Why do we go on as if she's the only producer on TV who's doing good work? — Rajiv

'Ekta knows I can't relate to saas-bahu soaps'

Rajeev Khandelwal reacts to buzz of a patch-up with Ekta Kapoor

ROSHNI K OLIVERA

There's buzz that you have patched up with producer Ekta Kapoor?

• Well, rumours should be best left as rumours.
Have the two of you met ever in the last one-and-a-half years?

• I have not met Ekta or spoken with her till date, ever since I left Kahin To Hoga (KTH). I have not been approached by her for anything. If ever I am approached, I would be more than happy to consider it because they are one of the best in the market and both Shobha aunty and Ekta have been fair to me in the past. But I see it as a remote possibility for they know that I can't relate to the routine saas-bahu soaps. I know they are all very high rating shows, but I somehow can't connect with them.
But the fact is that you are still best known as the original Sujal of Ekta's Kahin To Hoga...

• KTH for me ended a year-and-ahalf back. I'm glad that no one could take away Sujal from me. After all I had put my heart and soul in it.
What's happening on the acting front?

• I'm happy doing Left Right Left (LRL) on SAB. That's my second daily soap and I couldn't have asked for anything better. I'm open to anyone who is willing to put in genuine effort and to break new grounds. Failure or success comes later; what comes first is the honest approach.
But sometime back you were planning to quit LRL as you felt the show was stagnating. And now there's news that the serial is going off air...

• As far as my fate in LRL is concerned I have left it to my makers and the channel. I have full faith in them and I know they understand my problems. They are working on it and we will soon make an announcement, but as of now I don't want to be professionally wrong and disappoint my producers. They have been very good to me... far more than what I probably deserved.

Left Right Left's big secret is out. The mystery spy is none other than Dr Ritu Mishra played by the gorgeous Shveta Salve. Audiences of the show and her fans are said to be shocked with her role — she's the one who attempted to kill Captain Rajveer aka Rajeev Khandelwal with whom she had a love track.

"Yes they are all shocked. But that's the joy of being an actor. You get to portray each role of yours with conviction. The interesting part now is the track that tells you why she turned into a spy. In fact I accepted this role only because of the mystery involved. I knew it would shock everyone," she says.

Unlike most Indian soaps, which believe more in generation leaps rather than seasonal breaks, Left Right Left is going against the norms and taking a well-deserved month long seasonal break. The cast and crew are getting an unexpected break thanks to the forthcoming cricket World Cup which will be screened on SAB TV. Since SAB TV will telecast the matches with Hindi commentary the serial was given a break.

Considering the long hours that TV actors put into their shows it's no surprise that the actors, especially the show's villain are thrilled with the well-deserved holiday. "I am happy that the show is being given a break. It will be a great change for all of us to watch cricket, enjoy life and come back fresh and recharged," says Shveta.

The not so good anymore doctor who knows every cadet inside out and has access to their brains (she is a psychiatrist) has surprised everyone with her real identity getting exposed. She is a spy who was on a mission to steal a nuclear trigger from the academy. "She is now exposed. The character has not turned negative but she has grey shades and it's an interesting twist to the story," says Shveta who feels a grey character is far more interesting than a totally black character. "It's closer to reality because in real life all of us are grey." Ask her where the character is headed and she says it's for the channel to take a call. "I have enjoyed playing the role and as an actor I am prepared to play it whichever way it goes or whatever shade it acquires. I love challenges," claims the actress who is known for adventurous nature.

Ghazal Rai, the mobile addict Pooja of Left Right Left has proved to be a big hit with the audience and she is loving every moment of this fame. She talks about being recognised, putting a face to her elusive onscreen boyfriend and being part of a show, which has six main characters.

You have done theatre earlier. So how does it feel to finally get recognised with Left Right Left?
I am very happy that people recognise me now. Recently when I was on my way to the shoot an autorickshaw driver recognised me. He stopped me in the middle of the road and took my autograph. I was shocked as I never expected an auto driver to watch Left… So it feels really very nice.

But doesn't your role seem to be sidelined when compared to Priyanka Bassi's role?
When I joined the serial I was told that the story is about the six cadets and I am one of them. I really don't know what changes are being made in the storyline, but I believe in giving my 100 per cent to my work.

When will we get to see Rohit, your onscreen, missing love?
I am also very curious to find out whether this character will be included in the serial and who will be playing him. If he enters the show then there will be a love triangle involving him, Pooja and Ali.

Shveta to sizzle on stage again!

If you thought Shveta Salve might have put away her dancing shoes after sizzling on stage with Jhalak Dikkhla Jaa, think again! The svlete girl has become even busier with danche shows and when she's not busy shooting for Left Right Left on SAB and Cricket Star, she's rehearsing for these shows. Shveta will be performing tonight for an event for the Maharashtra Police Games, where she will dance to some of Bollywood's hit numbers. Shveta sure knows how to shake her booty!
